  1. Back pain on middle left area. What could it be?

I'm 25 male, not fat or anything. I've been running for about 2 months
regularly now (i cycle my running). I lift weights. I will admit I
haven't been running with a particularly good running shoe - in fact
I've been feeling the shin splits, as soon as the pains started last
week I bought a new pair. I'm wondering if the backache is related to
the pounding from running. I feel it when I stretch or turn my back in
certain ways. I don't feel it when I'm just sitting or walking
though....there wasn't one sudden thing moment when I suddenly started
feelign it. I'm hoping it's just the pounding from running and that
it'll improve now that I've purchased new running shoes.

It is very likely that your bad shoes and previous pains caused you to
compensate in such a way that put strain in your middle back.

My son is a runner, and if he doesn't have *real* good running shoes,
he gets very bad lower back pain. His pediatrician (also a runner)
said that one minor tweak can lead to something major elsewhere.

    What is your son's age/weight?

Yes, I've learned running shoes is one area where there is a
difference in a $60 price point sheo and a $120 one. The shoes I had
weren't even bad, they were just old, and the sole and cushioning were
    probably dead.

I hope it will go away now that I have proper shoes once again. Could
it be a muscle pull and will stretching help?

16...6'1" about 150 lbs. Part of his problem is that he is not built
like a runner. He is a basketball player who runs. If he runs too
much, he breaks down. It has been hard for him to find the balance to
    survive a cross country season.

IMO stretching always helps. It also could be a hydration issue.

    Here's a suggestion:

Have your legs measured. I broke my leg severely when I was young,
and one of my legs is close to half an inch shorter than the other,
and the rocking causes pain in the lower back and hips. My remedy was
to put a couple heel insoles, although you can get a podiatrist to
build up one of your shoes--costly since you'll wear them out
    regularly.

If your not black, you shouldn't run. White guys are meant to drive or be
driven. I would work on the being driven aspect and I'm sure the back will
    feel much better then.

Take up swimming, it's much better for you than running, plus you may fins
    some hawties around the pool.

Perhaps biking is an alternative, I can't do stairmasters or
ellipticals, I go nuts doing cardio indoors.

Hotties at my gym (Bally's) don't swim their, and they're not at the
community center either. When they are they're in full body suits. I
only recently just found out even the hottest women sometimes are
    ascared of the bikinis.

I'm trying to encourage my girl to wear a bikini but she "doesn't want
    to show everything".

Black men can't swim. Ever watch the olympics and
see a black swimmer? I didn't think so.

Stop running. It beats up your body and there are other non-impact aerobic
activities that are just as good. If you just have to be outside, walk
briskly at a 15-minute-mile pace for two or three miles. You'll get a good
workout and not beat your knees, feet, back, shins, etc. to pieces. When
you really want to get the heart pumping get on an elliptical trainer or a
    cycle.

Your 50-year-old self will thank you.

    A bike or a cycle?

How is biking for cardio? Would you say in terms of aerobic
    achievement a 30 minute bike ride = a 30 minute run?

So you're saying that Lance Armstrong wasn't in good cardio condition?

The point of any cardio workout is to get your heart rate into its target
range and keep it there for a set period of time. You can do this by
running, swimming or cycling (to mention but a few methods), but running is
by far the highest-impact and most damaging to the body. Thirty minutes of
pedaling can certainly equal thirty minutes of running, if you pedal fast
    enough.

Not a bad idea since it is known that white people pee in the pool.

Horseshit. My biking friends go on multiple 4 hour rides 5-6 times a week.
A 100 mile bike ride is done by many while only a few nutjobs ever do a 100
mile run. Thirty minutes on a bike (unless you are doing a 12% grade) is
cake if you compare apples to apples.

Here's a nice website for various activities. It gives calories
burned, which I know is not equivalent to cardio, but it's one way of
    comparing different activities:

    http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/jumpsite/calculat.htm

For example, for a 180 pounder, 30 minutes burns the following
    calories:

    Computer Work 61.3

Bicycling, Stationary: moderate, 150 watts 286.3
Bicycling, Stationary: vigorous, 200 watts 429.5

Bicycling: 12-13.9 mph, leisure, moderate effort 327.2
Bicycling: 16-19 mph, very fast, not drafting 490.9

    Basketball: playing a game 327.2

    Walk: 5 mph (12 min/mi) 327.2
    Running: cross-country 368.1
    Running: 6.7 mph (9 min/mile) 450
    Running: 10 mph (6 min/mile) 654.5

    Rollerblade / In-Line Skating 511.3
    Running: stairs, up 613.6

Swimming: general, leisurely, no laps 245.4
    Swimming: laps, vigorous 409
    Water Polo 409
