    Blueberry

For some people, starches and sugars make them hungrier. Especially if
you are avoiding fats and meat. If almost all you eat is pasta and
vegetables, and you are sensitive to carbs, then you will be constantly
    hungry.

Also, a major difference in the way Americans and Europeans eat is that
we eat large portions of everything. If you mostly eat meat and
vegetables, most people get full faster and end up eating less.

Another major difference is that over here "pasta" often means something
like Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Very processed, full of fat as well as
    carbs.

Well, Italy has the fastest growing rate of obesity and diabetes in

    Europe.

It's right add about the diabet ...
    http://www.mgsd.org/EN/A_mgsd/A6_mediterranee.asp
"In the Mediterranean and neighboring areas the incidence rates of type 1
diabetes under the age of 15 years show wide variations. In Italy the
incidence of type 1 diabetes in children aged 0-14 years is 6-11.7 (per 100
000 per year), while in Sardinia the incidence is 34.4, one of the highest
    in Europe (3)."

Have you noted the age? the problem is not for adults but for children!!!
and this is fault of the snacks!!! Children are becoming sedentary ... and
    they
eat in mess way! In fact some schools are forbiden the snacks!
    Like I was saying
in another post... the children have problem of weight and this a very
recent problem! Instead we are eating pizza and pasta from centuries! while
    the problem is very recent!

Likely not because of the Mediterranean diet, but because of the highly
processed carbs that come with the junk food/pizza diet.

:-D are you kidding? how many years... centuries we are eating like that!

When I was a kid growing up in the 60's, there were fewer fat people, and
to see a fat kid was even more rare. We ate high carb foods back then too.
The difference I think is that most of our carb food choices today are far
more refined, processed, and chemically treated than 40 years ago.
Along with the refinement of cheap carbs, we are less active today than
when I was a kid. You said in a different post that the kids today are
eating more junk foods and less veggies. Do you see a trend happening? Most
of the junk foods here are high carb, and kids seem to be eating more and
    more of them.
When I was a kid, we ate cereal for breakfast, but mostly it was oatmeal.
Today, most kids and adults eat sweet cereals from a box. When I was young,
sweet foods were a treat and rarely kept in the house. Today, most families
have a good stock of chips, chocolate and ice cream around the house all the
    time.
As a kid in the 60's, our fun consisted of being outside playing games,
fishing, floating down the river, bicycling, walking, and doing other things
with the family and friends. Today, kids are playing games on a computer
with their friends on line. If your seen floating down the river on a tire
tube today, someone would phone 911 and you'd likely be in trouble and told
what an idiot you were for playing such dangerous games on the water. When I
wanted to go somewhere, I had to walk or bike there. Now kids get a ride
    from their parents.
If you are seeing the same kinds of trends in your kids today, then get
ready for the obesity epidemic coming soon. How about your own eating
habits? Do you make your pastas from scratch like Mom and Grandma use to do?
Or are you buying the pastas from the store because it is more convenient?
How about your bread? Is it whole grain and made of natural ingredients at
home? Or do you find that you are purchasing the highly processed white
    bread from the store?
Possibly the changes in the foods your people are eating will come about
at a more rapid pace than the 3 or 4 decades that it took us. Generally I
don't see a problem eating a higher carb diet. But I do see a problem with
the types of carbohydrate foods we are eating today. Most people I know
don't eat a lot of fresh vegetables and whole grains foods. They choose
cheap refined carbs for the 50 to 60% recommendation for carbs.
The problem with our carb foods today is that they are too refined, too
sweet, and too much of it, coupled with a sedentary life style.

Also, the portions were *much* smaller when I was a youngster. A Coke or
Pepsi probably had the same sugar content then, but a full bottle was either
6 or 8 ounces! We though the 12-oz. bottles were *huge* when they were

My American friend, that is here in Italy right now...she tell me that

then here in Italy we don't use to go often to the restaurant, or to buy

  13. Tom,

You are absolutely right. I am 38. When I was in school, we walked---even if
it was 2miles, didn't matter. We played outside all day till dinner time.
When I was around age 10, along came the video games( the ones that ping
ponged all over)---very generic games compared to nowadays). We walked to
the malls with our friends..etc. Today, kids have cars entering 10th grade,
sit around text messaging or talking on their cells, very little exercising,
and are just plain lazy. Like I was telling JC in a thread a while
back---when I picked up my daughter from high school, I could NOT believe
how many over weight/ obese kids their were. When I was in high school,
there were *maybe* 5-10 in the whole school. And, many of those were not as
big as some of the kids I seen picking up my daughter.

We also didn't get the sweet cereal. My mom and dad would ask us what we
wanted for a treat when they went out for a night---we always chose Captain
Crunch. LOL. We would be soo excited to get it because it wasn't something
in our house daily. My mom would have plenty of fruit and veggies for us to
    eat after school.

Also, how many of us here drank the amt of soda kids drink nowadays? We got
soda about 3 times a year( usually in the summer when we went to the river
with friends). Look at the food being served in middle and high schools~~
ABSOLUTELY stupid. When I was in school, we had an apple machine in the
halls. It was huge and I would buy one after school to eat on the way home.

Anyhow, you are right----all the way( but I am sure you *knew* that🙂

Drinking sugar water is a real problem.

Also, the portions were *much* smaller when I was a youngster. A Coke or
Pepsi probably had the same sugar content then, but a full bottle was
either 6 or 8 ounces! We though the 12-oz. bottles were *huge* when they
    were first produced.

  16. as a fellow Italian in this group- 1 serving of pasta here in America is
more like a main dish-way too much pasta. I cut out all pasta and breads,
sugars the first 2 years to take off weight. It is only now that I'm adding
back whole wheat pasta, and making sure that it is only 1 portion a meal.
Way less than what I used to eat. I am not a diabetic, but it runs in my
family, so I changed my diet and lost 50 pounds.

The good news is that you can modify many Italian dishes to make them low
carb and have a very nice meal. Why do this? for one, you will not be as
hungry, and find that you spend less time in the kitchen. If you are eating
lots of vegetables and meats- then all you need to do is eat less of the
high carbohydrate foods. If pasta is so important to you, cut the portion in
    half.

Welcome to the group, your English is much better than my Italian.

I don't know how old you are, but you referred to yourself as a "girl" --

    so

that may have something to do with it.

    I'm 33! :-)

I also used to eat a lot of pasta

and other carbs. I even fell for the high-carb "diet" a few years ago

    when

    Quoted message said:

I wanted to lose weight, and there were some diet books that recommended
low-fat high-carb diets for weight loss. It didn't work, of course!
    Much
more important to my health, I eventually was diagnosed with diabetes (a
little more than a year ago). This time, I did some research and also
talked to a number of friends with diabetes. I didn't go true low-carb,

    but

I did adopt the South Beach diet and (in addition) completely eliminated
pasta, rice, potatoes, and added sugar.

Oh well..if you are talking about diabetes...it's another thing! of course
if you have this kind of problem...you don't have to eat pasta or bread...
    or this kind of food!
Who have this kind of problem don't eat them neither here! :-)
