Did You Ride Today?

My wife and I watched the crash video today. Hurt watching it and shows me after I got the bike off the road sitting on the roadside until my wife arrived. She noted how many vehicles passed without stopping to assist. There were some good people that lived there that came out to assist me. Still ,it was painful to watch.

If you're riding that much, who's doing the farm chores, your wife?

Bofus.

The drought summer killed off one of my most time consuming, least productive jobs for the most part...property maintenance. I increased work hours and my riding mileage is up only a little over past years. I've been pulling this schedule since I was a kid and there's no reason to slow down yet.

Until that next mutt with my name on it gives me the mandatory vacation.

Streak is officially over. It did nothing except rain a lot today and I spent the only dry portion of the morning in thr dentist's chair.

That was one impressive run you had CAMPYBOB !

Today I finally was able to get out and play in the woods with the mountain bike for 2 hours. Cool crisp air and some new trails made for a great day.

After I decide if I wish pursue legal action.

Of course there will be some type of legal action. Subrogation at the very least and a civil suit for uncovered costs the most likely. If there is going to be long term medical issues...which I sincerely hope there is NOT...it could get both ugly and retarded given what you have related about the owner of the muttly.

I know you could cover the expenses of your recovery, but the irresponsible owners of pets need to be sent a message. Loud and clear.

Loose pets are a threat to cyclists no matter how nice and friendly they are. As a matter of fact, of the three dogs that have taken me down all three were friendly dogs that I would have been glad to have as pets. It's rarely the dog that is the stupid animal in the equation. It is usually the owner that is the one with the I.Q. of a Cocker Spaniel.

Thank you, Zipp!

Like the 100-mile ride I did this Summer without putting a foot down, it is likely to be a statistic I do not break in my remaining years on this planet. We'll see though! Retirement and a change of climates may afford me the opportunity to do some fun things.

A 4.5 mile run in a misty morning, didn't think id get a ride in due to expected rain all day . It cleared up in the afternoon and I was able to get out for a 18.3 mile/18.5 mph/900 ft effort.

Good double workout, U!

Consecutive riding day number...er...

After two days off due to a lot of rain (around 5" over 60 hours) and catching up on some equipment maintenance I got a quick 32-mile ride in this morning. Only 1700' of climbing, but done at a decent tempo with legs that really did not like the two day off. It took a few miles to get them to respond to the throttle.

It was a cool ride at 63 degrees air temperature and the morning sky was still threatening rain as the front that had been socked in was finally showing signs of breaking up. A few glimpses of the sun was the best I got.

JH, how the Hell are you doing? Updates? Pics of the nurses?

Why yes. Yes, I did. OK, the ride today was the tail end of my ride from yesterday: 162.5km for an Imperial Century. To give a bit of perspective to the ride, I seem to have sat on a wild hair on the way home from getting fasting labs drawn. Oh, and I'm a 54-year-old woman. . .
I live in Richmond, CA, and the labs were drawn at the doctor I go to, which is in Livermore, CA. As I woke up later than I wanted, I took the light rail down to the end of the line. The minimum distance for a trip to the clinic is 45km, but I was feeling a bit froggy, so I continued up the bike trail which would bring me to another station which would add 30km to the ride. By the time I was starting to get near the second station, I had decided to claim a bridge I had been wanting to ride over (it has a bike path hung on the side of it). Seeing as that brought me close to the magic number of kilometers, I decided to take the long way to add enough to bring up the total to what I needed.
A few thoughts, though: it seems that I wait way too long before I eat on a long ride (or at least I did on this one). I was into a full on bonk before I ended up reaching for the meal bar, which meant that it was a while before I recovered from that. It is hard riding through a bonk! That probably reduced my range a bit. The other thing I learned on this ride was I really need to wear padded shorts for any extended riding! When I had finished my ride, I carefully inspected the running type leggings I had been wearing for any signs of wear, thinking back to the question that sbayhylle had asked about cool weather gear. There was none, which confirmed what I had said. My bum, however, was shredded! For anything more than about 100km, I will be donning padded shorts from now on! All in all, though, it was a great ride, and I added a bridge I had not yet ridden to my collection. Now I need to go do something nice for Schattentänzerin (the bike I had been riding).

No nurse, aside from my wife. I saw the Ortho Friday and they scheduled follow up with xrays for the the 21st. I saw negotiate srairs now but no weight bearing. Sleeping is tough but otherwise I am using handweights , doing leg lifts with ankle weights and plan to go onto the office tomorrow. Also loved the UT/GA game yesterday. What a finish.

And then there was Ohio State U. vs. Rutgers. 58-zip. Close game.

Leg lifts? I'm surprised they let you do those so soon after the fractures. Good to hear you can walk and get up the stairs. Take it easy for another couple of weeks! Drink your milk, eat yogurt and take mega calcium doses.

It rained three times today. I was dressed and ready to go as two of the storm cells hit. The rain came through in front lines, so no dry roads in the area. As soon as they neared drying the next line of rain would come through. Damnit!

At least I got the garage cleaned and prepped for Winter. And yeah, it really needed it. Loaded up four fire extinguishers to take out to the guy that recharges them for me. Hauled a load of trash to the dumpster. The usual dumb **** chores.

Nice ride, Gnufrau. Proper shorts and some chamois lube will make your next long ride a little easier on your backside.

Also, try eating some energy gels and something like Shot Bloks or Gummy Bears. Pure sugar for energy to burn, easy to carry.

Today was chilly with a light drizzle to start. Rode from church to Dave's house to see if he wanted to play in this drab weather. He came out and I let him pick the route and he decided to do a route with several long climbs. With each ride Dave's improving, and he's getting stronger with his climbing. Fun day with 29.51 miles in the books.

22.6 mph/17.3 mph/1190 ft. It was wet out there, but the temps were great for a mid day ride (55 or so). 5 miles to home and I see a bear come out the bushes from 200 or so feet away....Then another....and another......5 bears all together! Waited until they walked in the woods a d a few car zipped by before going by. Look close to the road ahead, can't imagine crashing into a bear.

OK. You win the 'Animals We Wouldn't Want To Smash Into' award for the month of October!

I freak when a deer runs in front of me. I'ld **** myself if a black bear walked out of the trees along the road right in front of me.

Note to self: A .380 might make a minimal round fro self defense against humans, but I think I should step it up to a .45 ACP .454 Casull for bear!

23 miles of moderate to stiff climbing under a warm 70 degree and sunny sky! As Bob Ross would say...lots of white fluffy clouds! The wind was a mild 5 to 6 MPH and not a factor in the rolling hills and couple of longer climbs.

The bike ran silently under me and I used every gear from top to bottom to keep the RPM's up. I hit 181 BPM over the longest climb and my respiration rate was dialed up to 'gasping for air' over much of the course. It's fun riding on the limit!

One of my neighbors is getting frac'd with a 5 horizontal leg Utica / Point Pleasant well and I rode over his way to go past the drilling rig. Most of the drill string was in the ground and the pipe magazine was almost empty...a good sign the boys were running them diesel engines into the shale play for big money.

Right around 1100' of climbing on this course. Enough to shake the legs awake.

26 miles in 72 degree sunshine! The wind was running 8 to 10 MPH and I headed for a few little climbs and ended up with 1250' worth.

I hitit a stretch at 15% and did my best to keep the 25 turning.

It was a quiet ride with not much traffic and other than some half run-in chip & seal the roads were fairly decent for a change. I saw some cougars walking on the track at the local park where I was loading up after the ride. Sadly, no prowl or growl in my direction. It's hell to get old I tell you!

22-1/2 miles in 73 degree sunshine! The wind was a noticeable 8 to 13 MPH this afternoon and the flat course only had 800' of climbing on it.

Again, a nice ride on quiet roads I was able to focus on keeping the power up. The warm air felt great.

JH, I forgot to mention that another mutt...just a smaller dog...came charging out of a yard the other day. I completely missed his run at me until it was too late to do anything except hang on tight. He locked up all four paws on the berm and like another mutt a few weeks ago...slid right behind my rear tire as I blasted by him. If that would have been a contact situation the fall would have been fast and painful.

How's the recovery going? Able to sit at your desk without discomfort? More importantly, can you still reach the ice tray in the freezer?

I have been in the office since Monday.... and ready to go home now. Seriously I have been back since Monday but only doing about 6 hours a day. As far as the ice tray I have a good nurse that keeps me supplied with the needs. As far as everything else let me say I suffered all summer in some of the worst heat I have ever dealt with and now the weather is great for cycling and I am #@%$^&*@! ..........frustrated. File it under life ain't fair.
