Did You Ride Today?

cold is 50 and below for me . The windchill of riding fast in the cold !
When its too cold I ditch the bike and become a runner! way less miserable than winter cycling IMO

Funny as I age ( almost 60 ) fewer can run fast . I prefer the 5 K cause I can typically place.

I don't know how low I can get. My body grew way more blood vessels in my hands and feet probably from not drinking water on rides and not using fan in indoor training. I think the more blood vessels helps keep my hands and feet warm in the cold.

I suspected the adaptations are meant for more efficient cooling. My body was forced to make adaptations to conserve water and one way to do that is to reduce sweating and increase capacity to store water. I suppose one way to do that without compromising overall cooling efficiency is to grow more blood vessels in the coldest parts of the body like the hands feet. It isn't a pretty sight....but as long as it works, I'm ok with it!

I can run but my technique is probably so bad from rarely ever running my quads hurt badly. Probably from using shoes not meant for running.

However, I noticed, if I keep leaning forward when I run like my aerodynamic road bike posture, my quads don't hurt anymore and I can run nearly as well as I ride but I look goofy as F***! I look like a tailless velociraptor chasing prey!

The physiology of the hands and feet blood vessels has caught me off guard . I just don’t know how to respond in area I’m ignorant of. I’ll reead and try to learn.

On the run - Wednesday I for kicks did an “ intensity workout “ #4 on my treadmill. 1.24 miles cadence avg 160 . Always barefoot on treadmill prevents plantar fashitus imo.
On the pavement I use cheap shoes for training and dripping 5-10 k. Just light walkers

So garmin in all it’s wisdom senses 1.24 miles my 88 bpm peak “ not excercise”

2 days later still im sore in knees quads butt &hips. High impact compared to low ( cycling )

A bit worried got “time trailing” a 3500 ft climb early 2 morrow crack of dawn
Just that 12 miles I’d talked of earlier . Over before it starts! Just get it over with process the misery later.

This year want to peddle the puddle(lake).about 65 miles. Going to be 5 hours plus on the bike. About 6000 ft plus of climbing Hadn’t done that distance or climb in 33 years.

My ride today on RELIVE. Cool little app that makes a ride video map type thing. Free.

Solo 40 miles 16.2 average speed.

Having fun with the Bryton GPS. Changing the rubber bumper from black to red. Things that keep it interesting. :D

todays mt climb failed horribly . The rangers got sick of people going over the gate barrier. Those who did evaded ticket descended while we were going up , as the gate the rangers insisted opening at around a little before 8:00 AM .
Geez on posssibly the hottest day of the year. Of course we all wanted to ascend while it was still high 70's low 80sF. The first major leg of ride to the junction was made swiftly and in large chainring for sections. Some shade at points.

An hour later and a gel and the late start and sun exposure made me a little fuzzy swerving and actually drove the bike into the sand and rocks just past a road sign . Had to step out / At that post well over 90F and I decided to gather my senses and balance descend and do the ride another day. Perhaps later this year or a projected cooller day.

The ride down was sweet . the road hot and clean good traction .Fastest top speed so far at that location. You get rocketed to 40 plus barely trying and then have a hairpin and have to brake radically and nearly run out of road. I love disk brakes compared to rim in this exact scenario. So prolly got in 2500 feet of vert today but just 10 miles or so . I'll do something to make up for tomorrow!.

I might be adding some running in my short training sessions in the weekdays. I never had my leg and core muscles this sore for a very long time, not even after sprinting sessions on the bike so I thought it must be good strength training.

Yesterday, I went for a 33 mile ride with 1,900' of climbing. It's supposed to be the 71 miler route with about 6,000' of climb I usually take but had to turn back half of the way because of the extreme heat.

I went out at noon where live temperatures reached 115 F index with 85% humidity outdoors. But it felt hotter over the black asphalt roads, maybe around 125 F! Definitely went over my comfort threshold during the climb. I became very mildly dizzy at the point I decided to turn back and glad I did. It was mostly downhill when I turned back and I recovered from my dizziness. Anyway, it was so hot that I broke my speed record on the downhill parts even when I'm sitting fully upright. Air got so thin because of the heat. I got scared because at the speed I'm descending, the bike is getting bounced off the ground and getting airborne by the bumpy road surface and made braking hazardous and I do need to brake because of our chaotic traffic on the road.

Mistakes have been made like I didn't drink enough water the day before the ride (since I don't drink during the ride, hydration the day before would be critically important). Another mistake is going out at noon and I faced the highest temperatures of the day. I also forgot to remove my mask on some of the climbs, causing me to overheat. I had to wear mask to reduce some of the soot I inhale from vehicle exhaust. Not perfect but inhaling less soot is better than inhaling all of them! I am literally breathing fire! I can feel the air I exhale on my face and it's hot!

But glad I didn't bonk. I still had plenty of energy left in my legs by the time I reached home but my head is spinning! Just glad I made a frozen milkshake before leaving. Ate it as soon as I arrived and gave a huge relief.

There were very few riders I came across in this scorcher. They were either on the return trip or just doing short rides. A group of young riders came behind me and signaled me to make clear the path for them. They were preparing to pass me but they never did. I saw them fall behind further and further until they disappeared from view. We were going over the freshly asphalted road which is very black and very hot and I think the heat got them. The heat got to me later eventually but my legs and lungs are still going very strong. It was my head that gave up!

Good account of your ride there cobbwheels ! glad you broke your speed record lol /

Did my 17 mile out and back plus loop on the peninsula early this AM . 2 minutes slower back to car as was getting hot . Finished up before the heat picked up .

I need more vert before tonight. Maybe tonight will cool enough to ride. I'm short on "workout minutes" already Sunday . my watch lost power yesterday . I guess I could edit the ride in Garmin (?) A shot near the old boathouse(s).

No traffic whatsoever this 4th of July Weekend on my route . Everyones hung over I expect. Just a few athletes out running early. A pic of my Husky enjoying the fireworks outside the Ball game in East bay.

And I'm trying not to! Not on a descent. Local road and traffic conditions are far too deadly for high speed descents. I went around 37 mph and passed trucks and motorcycles on the way down. Yes, even motorcyclists knows how dangerous the roads are and kept slow even if they can descend at 60 mph, they'd rather keep it under 35 mph. Although there are some maverick motorcyclists here who'd go up and down these roads at 80 mph, risking their life and others and mine as well. Often see them lying down at the side of the road, unconscious, and surrounded by paramedics and onlookers. They never learn.

I'm even sitting upright with elbows out and already wearing baggy board shorts, lose shirt to increase drag and I'm weighed only just 50 kg (110 lbs) at the time but the bike kept going faster from the hot and thin air so in the end, I have no choice but to drag the brakes.

I did break a few of my climbing segments despite the scorcher and thin air (from very hot and very humid conditions, displacing much of the oxygen from the air). I was actually doing heat and altitude (hypoxic) training in the past couple of weeks up to present and it helped.

Had a punchy 4th o July climb up a grade here locally. One mile into the ride I rode back and put on long tights - was 53 degrees and the shorts were not cutting it. Finished up before it had a chance to get hot. Last few days seen 100F plus.
19 miles total out and back 2600ft of vertical , all climbing on way up. about 4 cars each way tops. No gravel trucks on holiday!

Hadn't dropped back down that side of the mountain yet , just ascended the other side weeks back.
Surface was clean dry and smooth as hell. I'd not been 49MPH or above in 3 decades ( off the bike)

Did have to cut across the centerline a few times or run nearly out of pavement at that speed.
Ah the good old days .
But better now with disk brakes , faster deeper into the turn before braking. Getting used to my "new" tires the Corsa N.ext (28mm)pushing on them harder in turns. Was skeptical of a running a ribbed tyre ,is not that high a TPI count but very supple. I'd of course considered the GP 5000 and P Zero before going with the Corsa Next TLR

Starting to get a little faster and stronger. Notice in the flats starting to pick it up !

A few less ride pics perhaps. I was sloppy on a climb Saturday AM in the heat and wanted to photograph the deviation of my altimeter compared to the alt sign on roadside in same frame . Rode off into the gravel shoulder ( low speed) banged up a knee - but the bike is OK .

Mr Beanz. Really like that “relive” video of your ride. Dam cool way to share. Bet you rode fast as that yellow streak ! Really neat. I’m give the app a try. Like the elevation profile.

Some climbing today. Timed run 11 miles up - 11 down on that east bay landmark. Qualifying for time for bracket 2023 Mt. challenge . No mass start this time. Avoid the toppling wrecks and digging past the slowpokes of mass street.
Got 90 more days to train . Feeling raggedy and slow. . Cloud cover to 3k ft
The decent worth it every time. Having to pass the slow cars in suicide lane so sketchy. Why don’t they just pull over for me lol. ?! Just too steep to ride the brakes down and what a waste.
.
Higher Bpm descending than the climb. . WTH ? My breathing great - but Avg Hr too low . Might be the “fasting” thing. Hard to ride with anything but a liquid Iv and a gel halfway point. But no real pre ride nutrition short of what I ate night before. I’d say it’s working to be proud . But isn’t - my time today said. “You’re slow”. Also last few hundred feet I un clipped twice. No stranger to the steeper grades - just once again saved nothing
IMG_2413.jpeg
for the last few hundered feet where ironically is the top and plateau .

I’m just hesitant to eat close to or on ride and need to #1&#2. My body is a bit special gives no warning. You wouldn’t wanna be on my wheel let’s say. Hmm can’t put pics where I want. Dang mobile device.

The grade in the pic is not what un clipped for lol. I was referring a mile plus ahead where road forks to summit

The relive app will be cool with your climbs and elegain.

I need to get back to a little more climbing :D

Only thing I miss is that the XOSS GPS I used made its own little relive type videos as well but it showed the speed as the little marker traveled along the map. But I could never figure out how to share it.

Relive doesn't post the speed along the way. But still cool.

I have not ridden today, or yesterday, or for a long time since 2011. I feel so ashamed. I guess there is only one way to get started again....

Was a challenge to squeeze in a ride watching the heat numbers today. So waited till about 6:40 PM to leave .
Did my weekday scenic out and back plus loop. Starting temps were 90F plus but I dressed lightly and pushed got my fastest time on that little route. Im getting slightly inaccurate or varying data for elevation gain and max speed on that route between devices . Roughly 1500 ft gain 17miles quickie.

No pics , was focused on calories and hydration and ultimately my HR and speed on the route
Got in some zone 4 so felt good about that. A few extra sprints in the flats , or standing on the short punchy climbs . Today was a good day. 2 cars passed me in each direction , that's it. Road nice and sticky hot. Felt good pushing it in the turns on the rolled sections of the road ( not chip seal). Feeling high as a kite all night now. Cant wait to recover and do another ride.

Thinking of a predawn pass over the grade into the next county maybe Friday Am , before the commuters start going over the grade. Work to do ,but just want to ride my bike.

I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike.
I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride it where I like.
