Did You Ride Today?

How does Joaquin handle 50 MPH wind with his 50MM wheels?
.

He doesn't! :D We sent him an invite Friday night to ride with us on Saturday. He didn't respond to neither one of us. Then shows up 24 hours late when the wind is gone! o_O.........:D :p

It was only 53 degrees this afternoon, overcast with the wind machine going a steady 17 MPH with gusts over 30 MPH again.

I rode a medium tempo for 15 miles with just under 700' of climbing and checked out all the wind damage from yesterday. Limbs down, trees snapped in two, shingles and siding peeled and some minor flooding blocking one of my roads from that downpour we got yesterday.

Not a huge horsepower workout and it started to drizzle on me about three miles out, again! Got back to the car dry this time and the drizzle has just kind of stayed at the same light level for the last couple of hours.

It was a sunny 58 degrees and the wind a nice 6 to 7 MPH breeze instead of the usual hurricane.

Just had time for a quick 27-mile training ride with a focus of climbing fast and keeping the revs up. Right around 1300' of climbing.

I stopped to pick up a Craftsman 1/2" combination wrench. Bonus!

55 degrees and light rain all day.

I hit the trainer for 54 minutes of medium to high tempo work. Coming in off the road accentuates how tough the trainer workouts can be. No let up. No rest. No faking it. If you want the numbers it's a constant effort stay in the zone.

Just 2 18.3 mile rides this week. Nearly got attacked by a pit bull yesterday, it ran out into the street and I unclipped and shouted at it. The owner called it off and apologized. I'd like to just think of it as a no harm no foul, but....If I was on a serious downhill or was doing a poor job of scanning the road, it would have been a crash. 90% of dog owners in my neighborhood don't leash their dogs, its ridiculous.

Loose dogs suck. I've been taken down by mutts three times.

It rained most of the morning and only got up to 58 degrees, but the roads dried enough by 4 PM that I got a quick 13 miles in.

Nothing awesome. Just 200' of climbing and the speed was mediocre. Still, it was better than sitting on the trainer!.

I ordered another frame and am getting ready to build up another bike next week. Fun times ahead!

Man you ride a lot CampyB! I rarely get sick but somethgot me about 3 days ago that knocked me on my butt. No riding this week and a grad ceremony tomorrow if I live that long! :D

No ride today preparing for travel, plus it's now raining. I don't venture out in the rain to ride like I did as a kid anymore - had a bad experience - a nice and beautiful slide while navigating a turn (if I were a judge I'd given it a 10). If I get caught in the rain oh well.

I plan to get out early tomorrow morning and do some intervals at a local 3.25 mile ride (Haines Point in DC).

Zipp that was some nice climbing work. What was the specs of that hill? I am not very fast/strong on hills and need some more work - been doing some hill workouts with a local bike club. I tend to spin up hills and rarely if ever stand up. That's where I can get dropped. Any suggestions?

Btw, I'm a spinner when I ride. Some folks give me a hard time about that (all in fun though), but that's how I've always rode my bikes.

Thanks

If you go back to last Spring and Summer there was a stretch that I did something like 97 consecutive days. That was a lifetime record for doing consecutive days on the road.

I did a bunch of Centuries last summer and did one 100+ mile ride without putting a foot down. That was another first for me in 45 years of racing and training.

49 degrees and a cold rain fell all day. It's still raining at 4:20 PM and the wind is going 14 MPH with gusts in the mid-twenty MPH range.

I hit the trainer and just drilled it. My legs were shaking and cramping when I stepped off. The music was loud and fast. The fans were going full tilt and I was having a hard time trying to maintain the pace. 53 minutes of pain.

Day started of with rain that finally stopped around 1:30. So waited till about 3:30 and the roads were almost dried out, but the wind gust's were tough. So I decided to take out the single speed and do a hard 15 mile light roller ride, cranking over a 52/15. Decided to go into the wind for the first half while the legs were somewhat fresh. The wind was constant at 10-12 but the gusts hit close to 30 mph. By the time I hit the turn around for the last 7.5 miles the legs were feeling the hurt. Put the head down and went into TT mode and finished off a very fun ride. Even with the crazy wind out I was able to finish at 19.6 mph for my average speed. Thank You tailwind on the return trip.

I'm just the opposite I've always been more of a masher, and have to work on spinning more. I like to stand on climbs and on some of the climbs on this ride you had no choose even for guys running 2 36 or 38 as some were running. This event had some climbs with minor sections in the high 20's and low 30's for grades. For the most part they were in the mid to upper teens to low 20's.
I work in the 4th hilliest city in the US and have over 30 hills that are upper tens and mid 20's that I play on once a week once the weather gets nice. The only way to get better on hills is practice, practice, practice. Find a tough hill and do repeats practicing out of saddle climbing, you'll get better at it over time.

Mashing is where the fun is at Zipp! I like to stand and mash as well, even at times when its not the most efficient method. Even on faster rides with PR's on certain hills, my cadence can be in the 70-80 range. What city do you ride in that is the "4th hilliest"? Thinking about throwing my bike in the car and taking a cycling road trip.

Fitchburg Massachusetts just tons of steep little thigh burners. I can leave work and be on one in the matter of a minute and hit close to 20 of them in a 3 mile radius. Just a fun way to spend several hours after work.

Toady was practice spinning on the climbs day, so I went down to the Burg after service to start the fun. It's not easy because I have to remind myself to stay seated and spin, I'm a masher. Most times I'm up and out of the saddle less than 1/2 way up a climb. Did revert to old habits several times but overall I did spin, spin, and spin some more. Got out for 35 miles with a tad under 9 miles spent climbing with 63 degrees and 8-10 wind.
