Shomik, It looks like you have a high amount of overlap and shortening. Like multiple inches. In my opinion you should consider surgery or else that shoulder will be much shorter and could cause other problems with the girdle like with myself. Seek multiple opinions before making a decision. Don't scare yourself away from surgery. The symmetry of your body is important for proper function. Best of luck Brad

Clara:
Hehe! I'm sure people won't think you're a monster Clara, and it's good to here you're doing well.
Did you swim before much? How much swimming would you be happy with at the moment?

Brad:
They better dig scars! Haha! Good to see you smiling too! Hows your neck?

Shomikc:
Sorry to here about what happened. Well, first off, like brad said, get a few opinions from the pro's aswell.
All though it's not the worst break I'v seen, (no break is good though) in your case, I think I would get the surgery. The 2 pieces are out of line in quite allot.
You will probably have more saying that you should get it done, rather then not. In my case I had no choice (see x-rays)
Surgery is a big thing but having had it done myself, it is worth it.
Keep us updated.
We wish you all the best.
Sam. :)

ahahahhaa chicks dig scars ! but unfortunately guys don't ....
anyway, brad, it looks really good...u don't wanna see how scars look like on some people here...I mean they butcher you!

btw I went to see 5 surgeons! and I am still not completely happy but I wanna try swimming and see how it helps...my range of motion isn't quite pleasing....I mean I can drive stick and cook and carry light weight stuff but I used to play tennis and a little bit of basketball...throw a football around and now I can't even imagine doing that...I feel like it will break again..lol..I know it's stupid...that's why I wanna see how the strength will come back to my arm and I shall take pick it up from there...
small steps...hate it but what can I do...
three surgeons that I have consulted including one in another country said surgery is not necessary now and that through PT i can get back to normal...well not like 100% but u get what I mean...
I still have pain in the morning but less than before so I guess it's a slow and complicated recovery but well...no scar...just a tiny bone sticking sometimes through the skin...guys better dig that! :D

ah yeah and to answer the question...I haven't been swimming much before but the doc said to try at first to relax and just do it for fun and step by step try using the right arm more and more...
it's very good for back pain and joints ..u get the point :)

Hey all, Sam, (nice to know your name :)) Neck is getting a bit better day by day. Still just tight and swollen. I was pleased with the incision when the bandage came off. I think it will heal with a very thin line with time. I put a new waterproof dressing on for now. Clara, I think it's good that you are being so cautious getting back into things. If you can slowly build muscle back in the area then it will help support the bone and prevent refracture. I wouldn't worry so much about the look of the bone but more so how it makes you feel in your own body. Though the plate can cause irritation, I feel that it will be easier to deal with than the bone spike sticking up that you see in my before picture. It's still too early to tell though. I hope you get back into swimming to rebuild your muscle and then the bigger things like the sports you mentioned will come with time! Even though my doctor said 4 months for a return to golf, I may take it easy this season and guarantee myself a full recovery. These are the sacrifices we have to make when injuries occur :-/ Warm regards, Brad

Brad:
Ah yeah I never said what my name was, I never really thought that this user name is different to my youtube account! Oops! hehe! But I'm sure you can relate to that brad, babs? bsbs? bridsmith/smath? WTF#*!{!@!
It will be tight and swollen for a while. when you start your more advanced arm exercises, Which shouldn't be long, it will get better much quickly.

Clara:
Haha! thanks for confirming chicks dig scars. Maybe I'll more action then before!!
I don't think guys or girls (certainly not me or anyone I know) will look at a woman less or think lower of them just because of a imperfection on the skin. Rest assure you can wear your summer clothes and dresses with confidence. (feel free to post pictures of that too! /img/vbsmilies/smilies/wink.gif)
Can I recommend you try and get to a spa pool rather then a normal swimming pool, it's much quieter, and sooooo relaxing!

hahaha, I told you man, remember? Surgery is easy and wonderful for this cases, remember how scared you were before? Shomik, I had the surgery within 24 hours after the accident. My opinion is simple and direct. Go have the surgery as soon as possible. I don't know your finances but health is the most valuable thing you have. Your clavicle will never be the same without surgery and your whole trunk will deform, all surrounding muscles will change size and you will have permanent pains, ask bsbs who got the surgery with 3 years delay. stick around here, there are a lot to learn and ask whatever you like about your problem

yes, keep it covered for 2-3 weeks, use a lot of antiseptic too, from your last photo I can see your left shoulder is still a little shorter than the right but this is only temporary, your muscles will now stretch comfortably and take their initial length as before the crash so your trunk will be symmetric again

Yeah, it isn't possible to determine length and symmetry yet with all the swelling anyway. One thing the doc told me is that it can't be perfect, which is understandable. It is more like less than3mm shorter now as opposed to more than 20mm (2cm) before. Huge difference. Apparently nobody's clavicles are really the EXACT same length. Makes sense. This got my gf thinking and she starts looking in the mirror at here and notices one is a bit curvier than the other (barely). Look what I did! Haha. Also I will be losing muscle in that shoulder over time so I really can't make a call on the outcome until months from now. There is however an obvious improvement immediately as you can see. The before picture is considerably off. One thing I just noticed today (day 4), the bruising on my chest is getting a bit bigger and more colourful. I assume this is just the course a bruise takes and is pretty normal?

Hey Alyson, All the best with your operation. I just had mine 4 days ago. Don't expect anything to be instant but think of the long run! If it still bugs you after a year then something should be done. This was my outlook. You're doing the right thing! Just make sure your son has someone to take care of him while you are recovering. Brad

hi brad thanks hun and yeah my hubby will be looking after my son he he, will u be having your plate removed as i was told i got keep it in....

aly, you can have the plate removed, the time depends on how fast the heeling progresses. it is about 15 months for me, others have it removed in 7, 9 or 18 months I want it out because my skin does not bond well with this metal thing, when it is removed it will unite with the bone as before.

*****:
So how is it all going with you?

Brad:
Yes the bruising will look more 'lively' over the next few days, it will probably stay like that and then slowly go. I would be interested to see what your bruising is like if that's ok? seeing that the crash was 3 years ago, and you 'only' have the bruising from the surgery.
Here are some pictures of the bruising I had a few days after the crash, but I don't have any of after the surgery.
Day 2:

Day 5:

The little dark red-ish spot just above the dark area of bruising, is where the point of the large part of collar bone was poking up.

alyson:
Well, I'm not surprised you're not looking forward to it, I wasn't either, but soon into physio, you will be very glad you got it done.
When you say you were told to keep the plate in, did they mean for longer then normal, or permanently? If so, do you know why this is? In the case of the collar bone, I haven't heard of people needing the plate to stay in permanently. Weather you do need it to stay in or if you can choose later on to have it out, it doesn't really matter either way.
You are doing the rite thing though./img/vbsmilies/smilies/icon14.gif And we wish you all the best /img/vbsmilies/smilies/smile.gif
Keep us up dated.

Hi Alyson,

Before my surgery the doctor said I would probably want to have it taken out but then when I saw him in the recovery room he said it's probably not going to bother me that much so we will see. I guess once he got in there to see everything he found a way to fit it on nicely. Only time will tell. If there is any way to avoid a second operation then obviously thats nice.

Sam,

The bruising is kind of there in my picture I put up with the bandage off. It is just a bit bigger and darker than that now. It takes up the whole left side of my chest pretty much. From what I hear this is normal. There's no really dark bruising like you have there. I think that was from the bone hitting the inside of your skin.

Heal up!
Brad

*****:  So how is it all going with you?
I have significant strength, I play basketball, I ride but carefully, easier terrain, no jumps, the other day I lifted my buddy (75Kg) with both arms up to my shoulder. I am quite pleased What I am not satisfied with is that the muscles at the impact point when I had the crash are still numb, not as much as the first months but still they don't feel normal. It takes time to get back to their normal. The plate definitely bothers me and I will have it removed when the time comes, as I said above the plate does not bond with the muscles/skin and it does not feel normal. What about you? How are you doing? I remember you had a multiple fracture, and two plates installed, correct?

Brad:
Thanks! I'm healing pretty well.
Yes, heavy bruising like yours, (and mine) is very normal. Not nice, but normal.

*****:
Wow! 75kg? You must be pleased. I'm only allowed to lift a 1 kilo dumbell at the moment! The docs said the numbness will either go or not, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, theres not really much that can be done to help that./img/vbsmilies/smilies/frown.gif Your very brave to have surgery again too, It's not something I could go through again.
Yes I had multiple brakes, but only 1 plate.

(Updated) - 2 weeks pots opp

I have noticed since I started the strength, the tightness loosens up much quicker.
I'm still feeling pain in my bicep, and tricep muscles when doing trying to keep my elbow in doing exercises. And when I'm doing the punch movement (not actually punching yet, just the movement) I still can't do it keeping my elbow in, it all ways moves outwards. It's better then it was, but not fixed yet. I have started doing it standing next to a wall so it can't move outwards. like you said though, it takes time.

sam, is this xray a recent one? the numbness needs a lot of time to disappear, I am almost 8 months post op and still feel it but not as bad as in the first months. You will be able to lift heavy later on, now give it time to mend. My take is that physio can wait until the bone fuses nicely first. Light swimming with careful moves would help. In the beginning I felt this numbness even when I did not touch that spot, now I feel it only when I touch it. So the sense of touch is different. The plate bothers me, I have the impression that it does not let the muscles/skin bond with the collar bone, I have discussed it with my doctor and he told that some people have this feeling so it is better to remove it later. Hey Brad, what's up?

Hello again!

Sam,
How long ago did you get surgery? I feel like you are a few months in now aren't you? You should be doing pretty good by now I would think! The X-ray you linked looks like the bones are still trying to join at an odd angle even with the plate though? Or is that just me?

*****,
I guess this is day 6 now and things are a bit better. Obviously still tightness and numbness which has lessened though. Right now majority of the pains are right when I wake up in the morning. It's very stiff and painful in the morning and I feel I need to stand up and swing it lightly in the pendulum movement just to get the "kinks" out or something. I am still not really using the arm for much. I use it when I am on the computer and can rest my elbow on the arm rest, so I am using the hand a lot playing video games and stuff. Still taking a perc now and then when I need it, but definitely not every 4 hours anymore.

I am going to try to start working from home starting tomorrow. Sitting at the computer for long periods of time can be a tax on the shoulder so they will have to deal with me being off and on. I'm glad I chose to work in the IT industry right now (software developer).

I changed my bandage again yesterday. Can't really see how things are healing up because I am supposed to leave the steri-strips on. The cut is definitely long but I think it will heal up nicely and not be too noticeable.

All in all I am still happy with my decision. I feel like more of a man now that my shoulders are broad and symmetrical. I can't wait to start physiotherapy and start getting my ROM and strength back.

Will post again soon.
Brad

Haha! Oops! sorry I should of said, this x-ray is the 2 week post opp x-ray, not a late one. I'm at 5 months, 3 weeks now. And yes I am doing pretty well now, simply because since I started the strength, I actually feel like I'm working much harder, and I felt like I passed a half way point, which the physios say should be a quicker stage to get through.
Sometimes though I do think that I am behind on getting better. When you think about it, in under 2 weeks, I'll be close to the 1 year anniversary, then the actual day the crash happened!
I have questioned the docs and physios about the speed of my recovery, but they are sure that I'm making good progress, and that everyone is different anyway.
I'm still getting impatient though!
About the swimming thing, I hate swimming and I'm not very good at it anyway, so I just got to a spa pool every now and then. Not to swim, but to do all my exercises there, which I find work very well. And it's very quiet and relaxing!
