so, if you do something wrong the first time you automatically think
    it's worthless?

is that the way it works?

You think it's better to try the same thing over and over when it's been
    shown not to work?

you know there's more than one effective way to lose weight, that not
everything that works for one person works for everyone else. try
    applying that principle to therapy.

it could be something as simple as joining the local hospital's "quit
smoking" program or something like that, you know. you need to start
    somewhere.

or you can just keep being a non-quitting drama queen. you do seem to
like it, so it must be working for you on some level.

Yes, it does help to talk about problems on a support group. The smoking
thing wasn't even the point of the original post other than as the trigger
that set off the weight gain. It sure is overly dramatic of me to talk
about recommitting to my diet on a diet support group. The drama didn't
come from me, it started with the preachy do-gooders who decided to change
the subject and berate me for deciding to delay quitting smoking. When I
tried to explain the reasoning, yes, _reasoning_ behind the decision, I was
told I was making excuses. It's interesting how in a post-space age world,
people still believe they have the power of mind reading.

I accept any and all genuine support. I won't accept "advice" in the form
of character insults, advice to get therapy for a chemical imbalance, or
advice to just kill myself. If you think I should accept every stupid
statement from strangers on usenet as some sort of gospel, if you think I
should disengage my brain and just blindly follow what everyone else says I
should do, then no matter how well meaning and nice you are I am going to
have a hard time taking anything you say seriously.

imagine how much it could help to talk to someone who is not only

isn't just some random [censored] on the internet.

It's interesting how different people's opinions can be. I've got you and
JC saying or implying that I have muddled thinking, I've had other people
on here tell me I'm smart and I make a lot of sense, I have you telling me
I'm a drama queen and other people in my real life telling me they like me
specifically because I'm not dramatic, and I've had people criticize me for
    being "too logical."

I have reasons to believe my depression is physical/chemical. It runs in
my family. It was at its worst when I was quitting smoking, cutting back
on caffeine, not eating meat, or not exercising. I went to therapy after a
bad breakup, and my therapist told me that all the stuff I was feeling was
normal, and that I just needed time to heal and that she didn't think I
    really needed therapy.

I've been reading on alt.support.stop-smoking that it's normal to feel
depressed even months after quitting, even when things were going well up
until then. Maybe just knowing that it's normal will help the next time,
or maybe I should look for some kind of medication to help me over the
hump, but I do have concerns about anti-depressants too.

I've been thinking today that maybe I don't need to wait to quit again
until I'm at goal weight. It's not the weight that matters so much as the
establishment of eating right and exercising as a habit. I was in that
groove for a while, but I slipped out. Maybe after a month of eating right
and working out every day, then the habit will be established enough that
the nicotine withdrawals won't trigger me to slip back into bad habits.
Anyway, that's my new theory and I'm sticking to it.

I never said I wasn't going to do anything about it. Recommitting to
strict low-carb and more exercise is what I'm doing about it. Before I
quit smoking I was already an occasional cheater and an occasional workout
skipper, and the stupor that came with nicotine withdrawals made those
problems worse, so it resulted in withdrawals + too much sugar + inactivity
+ weight gain = not caring about myself or my health any more. So I'm
going to try no sugar + regular exercise + weight loss = renewed optimism
and motivation to improve my health and take better care of myself,
including quitting smoking. Low-carb and exercising improve my mental and
emotional health, which gives me the tools to more likely be sucessful in
quitting smoking. I don't see what's muddled about that.

is that truly a reality for you?
what would be wrong with exercising every other day and giving
    yourself a more "realistic" goal.......................

    just a suggestion.

I started out exercising every other day, and I have an inertia problem.
Objects at rest tend to stay at rest. Get up early on Monday to go to the
gym, sleep in on Tuesday, and it makes it that much harder to get up early
on Wednesday. Plus, I get a high from exercising that makes the whole rest
of my day better, and on the days I don't work out, I feel down and "blah,"
so I wake up the next morning feeling "blah" and I have to work against
that feeling to get myself out of bed early enough to go work out. I tried
alternating weight days with aerobics days, but it was too easy to skip the
gym on aerobics days and say "I'll just go jog after work" and then be too
tired after work to do it. So I'm going to split my weights workout into
upper and lower body, and that will get me to the gym every day because I
love the weight machines, and once I'm already there I might as well get on
the stair-stepper or treadmill first to warm up, and I know from experience
that when I leave the gym I have more energy than I know what to do with
the rest of the day, which generally means I end up running around and
actually playing with the kids at work instead of just "supervising."
