I started LC at 350 lbs two weeks ago. I have been dedicated and the initial weight loss was wonderful. I could sit in chairs that were too small, and my clothes were bagging out. I didn't have a scale...but I have since ordered a digital one.
My problem is that I feel myself creeping back. I was giving myself 1 day a week of freedom, but I limited it in some respect. I had a few bites of potato and a large slice of chocolate cake with buttercream frosting...which made me almost instantly feel sluggish.
Does anyone have any tips. I'm 52.

Yes, don't eat those things. If you need a sweet or chocolate fix find yourself some ZCarb bars or Hershey's 1 carb bars. Some people will tell you to avoid substitutes and butch up but my feeling is that the substitutes are much better than the high carb things and if that's what you need to keep you on track, go for it.

You should go through the kitchen and dispose of all the carby stuff.

Yes, at 52 and 350 lbs you don't need to allow yourself to slip. If you have too, eat more LC food than carby [censored]. Quit eating potato and cake.

I agree, some days these things are what keep me on program. My doctor said today that I "could cheat" occasionally, but I think once I get that sugar rush, I'll be back to my old habits. My blood sugar numbers are now almost normal, so I think I'll stay with this WOE for awhile.

Cake isn't your friend Mary. Your approach, and your description of it as a day of "freedom" (as opposed to captivity or imprisonment or punishment being the state of low carbing) needs a second look. At 350 pounds you're morbidly obese. That's not a state one reaches eating a bit too much food (I know, I've been there). Your whole approach to food has to be redesigned. My one tip would be to eat meats and vegetables for the next two weeks. Nuts in moderation, dairy as well, and some low carb fruit for variety. No days off. Exercise to the best of your abilities as they are now and compare how you feel now with how you feel in two weeks. Decide you're worth it.

If you do try some low carb chocolate, make sure you try a small amount first. I made the mistake of eating two small bars of low carb chocolate and spent the better part of a day in the bathroom.

I think I was believing that this one day was alright.
I want to lose weight because I am darned uncomfortable.
I have been keeping my carbs down to 54 per day....is this good? My treats during this period were berries in cream with splenda. This seemed to satisfy my longing for sugar.

you misunderstand what freedom means. Being led by chocolate cake addiction is not freedom.
If you think that 6 days a week you are "unfree" but for one cherished day you have "freedom", dieting will get you nowhere.
What is the reason for your plan to drop weight. Do you want to look good, to live long, to feel better, or what?

I wasted nearly 2 months "fooling around" trying to do low carb and not give up very much.
It was a waste of time, effort and money.
I suggest that on reflection, you will eventually come to believe about the same thing.... follow the book religiously for a couple of weeks and don't "invent" anything.
Yes, it is hard.
But so is walking at 350 lbs. And jogging is impossible.
In the same way, "One Day A Week TO Pig Out" is also impossible.

I'm going to make it this time, Carmen..... I've tried everything from Weight Watchers....to starvation.
I like this configuration. The food is everything I desire, I've never really liked carbs except sugar.

No, I'm healthy as a horse. I had a great aunt who lived a ripe happy life over 400 lbs. It never bothered her.

The carb count per day is good when it leads to sustainable weight loss.
How are you exercising?

No, no it's not if you live alone!!!
I remember seeing an MTV Cribs where one lady had a bathroom and a fridge .... in her closet.
I had bought three of the bars, and after spending the day in the bathroom decided they weren't worth it. I have tried the Hersheys, which do not have maltitol -- the cause of my malady, and it didn't have the same effect (although I learned my lesson: I made one small bar last a while).
That's why I recommended what I did, those have erythritol which is highly unlikely to produce a laxative effect. I wouldn't recommend anything with maltitol in it.

That's true. I just want to make sure that the original poster, who probably doesn't know what a "sugar alcohol" is, doesn't select the wrong thing.
erythritol = good (?) maltitol = bad lactitol = bad
These recommendations also change depending on the person. For example, maltitol is very bad for me but others are unaffected by it. I don't remember hearing that anyone is badly affected by erythritol, but I wouldn't doubt that there are people who are.

Aargh! I hope you keep the curtains closed. There's a mental image designed to leave lasting scars: a man shuffling through the house with his pants down around his ankles as he makes his way towards the kitchen. <G>
Take care, Carmen PS I think I need to bleach my brain now!
