  1. If you believe in oaths, you may want to consider making an oath to the
deity representing whatever religion you practice. You can do it for a week
right? Then when the week is up evaluate the situation and decide if it is
necessary for you to take another oath. You wouldn't want to be a liar to
    your God would you?

All day bike ride, backpacking in the mountains, building a cinderblock

Get out of the mindset that you should reward yourself with high carb food
for anything. Find a non food type reward if you want to celebrate but steer
    away from food as reward.

Until you know what you're doing you need to follow a plan. Low carb isn't

Oh, I dunno. I reward myself with food sometimes. On special occasions I
will splurge on lobster tails or a good steak. Or sometimes both if I've
    been especially awesome.

I would love 38 pounds, Debbie. I am determined..... I am determined to
believe that I can lose 6 pounds a month.... Hey, 38 pounds is almost 10%
    of my current weight.

Don't pin your hopes on a specific number, that way lies disappointment.
Watch the overall trend and don't obsess over your scale weight. I only
weigh myself every few months and trust in my old belt (now with LOTS of
holes in it) to let me know how I'm doing.

I've read that guys are supposed to be able to lose faster than the gals,
but I found that after the first few weeks I settled into losing an
average of about 2-3 pounds a month. A few months of stalling out here
and there but otherwise pretty steady.

I'm figuring another year and half to make it to my goal weight since I'll
probably be slowing down even more but that's a happy prospect as far as
I'm concerned. Heck, it took me 35 years to get that fat, so what's a
measly 4-5 years to lose it?

    A bad idea...

    Why?

Attaches too much emotional drama to foods.

I eat shrimp sometimes as a reward. It's not about the emotional drama,
it's about the financial drama. Well, I guess the financial drama causes
    some emotional drama.

  8. On the subject of food as treats, I found it helpful to redefine "treats."
Before I went low-carb, a treat had sugar in it. When I quit eating sugar, I
filled my refrigerator with sugar-free treats (and by sugar-free, I don't mean
sweetened with artificial sweeteners). Someone mentioned shrimp, which is a
treat for me, too. I love smoked salmon, so I had as much of that as I wanted.
I bought some cheeses from a gourmet store. I bought some imported
    prosciutto. That kind of thing.

It was transitional, although it was in keeping with the WOE I chose. (I am
doing mostly South Beach, with a bit of Atkins.) And it's something to
    consider.

Eventually, I discovered a new definition of treat: being able to walk without
my thighs brushing together. Ultimately, treats should have nothing to do with
food. But I do think the realities of changing to a new WOE dictate that some
people go through a transition of sorts.

    Jeri,
I agree with you 100%. I used food as a reward all the time, and
also as comfort. And that only made staying away from food more
difficult. If I was telling myself I can't have something, I'd start
to feel like I didn't deserve it, and then I'd feel upset, depressed,
    etc.
Now I have a better reward - shopping. If I need to congratulate
myself, I will get a shirt or some makeup or something - same amount
I'd spend on a carby dinner goes for something that #1 - makes me feel
and look good, and #2 - will last longer than 30 minutes.

If I really crave something sweet, I'll eat fruits or berries. But
    not as a reward anymore.

One of the reasons I'm suggesting South Beach for you is that it is easy

    to

    Quoted message said:

do, if you buy the book. You don't count carbs, calories or anything

    else.

    Quoted message said:

You eat from a list of foods. Phase I is low carb by anyone's standards.
Phase II includes things like the oatmeal and fruit you seem to need to

    eat.

    Quoted message said:

You do Phase I for two weeks. Your only carbs are low GI veggies. If you
do it faithfully, the cravings will go away.

When you go to Phase II you add one grain and one fruit to what you have
been eating. You might get to add more grains and fruit, and you might

    not.

    Quoted message said:

It depends on how things go for you. Fruit is one of my trigger foods, so

    I

    Quoted message said:

need to be careful with them. Every once in a while I need to go get a
piece of cheese to shut the cravings down.

No matter what diet you finally decide to do, BUY THE BOOK. You aren't
doing yourself much good trying to pull a plan out of the air. Pick a

    plan,

    Quoted message said:

buy the book, and follow what the book says. And you will succeed.

  13. I'm starting slowly on the exercise because I have been sedentary for too

    YAY!

You'll be amazed at the results that just a little exercise will get
    for you.

My wife and I both dropped most of our weight by making the transition
from completely sedentary to 30-60 minutes of walking each day.

Strange as it may seem, ramping up from 30-60 minute walks to all-day
mountain climbs had almost no additional weight benefit, though we are
now obviously stronger and able to climb mountains. (:

Anyway, congratulations on taking the huge first step of going from
sedentary to moving. You'll find that it makes weight loss much
    easier.

    Cheers, Wolf.

now obviously stronger and able to climb mountains. (:

Anyway, congratulations on taking the huge first step of going from
sedentary to moving. You'll find that it makes weight loss much
    easier.

    Cheers, Wolf.

    Why?

Attaches too much emotional drama to foods.

Not really. How much is too much? It's fun to splurge (money wise) every
once in a while. The fact that lobster tails are so delish and I can't
have them just whenever I want because of budget makes them more enjoyable.
I don't see anything wrong with enjoying food, being happy to have good
food, and including food as part of a celebration. Now, it's not of course
the _only_ way I celebrate, I do let my other 4 senses get involved too.

You'll be amazed at the results that just a little exercise will get
    for you.

That's for sure. A few months ago, my sisters (both heavier than me
by percentage of weight, neither willing to LC yet) talked me into
running a 5K with them. One of them found a training schedule online
called "Couch Potato to 5K in 9 weeks." It started us out jogging 9
intervals of 60 seconds each, and we were huffing and puffing just to
finish those. It gradually increased the lengths of the runs, which
    were three times per week.

Ten weeks later, we ran in the Hannibal Cannibal, a fairly difficult
5K according to the experienced runners there. (It includes a
1/5-mile, 45-degree hill.) We didn't put up impressive times, but we
all finished, which I never would have guessed we could do back when
we were struggling to jog a full minute at a time. I was amazed how
    quickly we improved.

(By the way, none of us lost any weight from this drastic increase in
exercise. I had just started back on LC a couple weeks before this,
so I had just dropped about 10 pounds, mostly water. The exercise
made me hungrier, and hanging around with them brought me into contact
with too much carby food on those days, so I maintained. They
couldn't figure out why all the exercise wasn't burning off the
pounds. I explained why, but they aren't ready for LC yet, so they
continued to look for other reasons.)

I probably wouldn't recommend jogging right off the bat for most heavy
people who haven't exercised lately, because it is a pretty drastic
change and can be hard on the joints. Walking would probably be a
better way to start, maybe mixed with some simple exercises like
sit-ups, push-ups, and squats. Whatever you do, you'll probably be
surprised how quickly you feel the effects.

I'm starting slowly on the exercise because I have been sedentary for
too long. I'm going to a big superstore every day, parking further

It can be hard to get going, but it is a big boost. I'm not exercising as
much as I should, but am doing a brisk 15-20 minute walk 4-5 times a week,
and hope to increase it as I feel better and more weight drops.

  20. I would probably be at the level of a brisk 2 minute walk at this stage.
I'm going to try to follow your lead Debbie....you seem to be like me
but....ahead.... I like your 38 lbs.... I like your honesty.

I feel so much better...this is actually the first day of my third week, and
though I did blow it unknowingly, I feel younger....
