Total amount you have in the sport?

My parents gave me my bike for my birthday almost 13 years ago, since then I have bought a set of road tyres for it, replaced the pedals and one crank, and put bar ends on. So I would say much less than $100.

I have about $5000+ spread across 3 bikes.
most of that is all the extra **** you need along with replacing cheap quality stock parts. I feel guilty until I see my father spend all day sitting in front of his $2000 big screen life stealer.

Just spent another $1000 all up on a new set of racing wheels. I think my total know is around $4000-$5000

what i is spend a hell of a lot less then a drinking/drug habit.

put it this way...

ive a friend that spends $700/month for his TV sports package/cable bill... not to mention the beer, weed and **** food he consumes sitting in front of the damned thing.

not counting doctors bills about 12,000 over apx 10 years. make that 12,800 forgot hid lights:)

Same here, probably $8k-9k over the last 8 years.

ROI has been excellent, worth every penny. I'm in far better shape than I was 10 years ago.

Not too long ago, I was starting up a 1 mile climb, when a guy on a motorcycle passes and says - I'll see you at the top.

So I thought - yeah, I'll see you in the cardiac ward, ya pudgy *******.
JonhO, motorcyclists don't live long enough to make it to the cardiac ward. You might see them on the orthopaedic ward, the spinal ward or the neurosurgical ward... (or in gaol if they belong to one of the many brotherhoods of motorcyclists).
For all you motorcyclists reading, yeah, I know I'm generalising...

In our household currently (me and gf)

My Roadie - $3k (Ultegra)
GF's Roadie - $4.5k (Ultegra, Easton EA70 and Aftermarket frame)
My DirtJump MTB - $3.5k.....new frame beginning of next year approx $1k (Bling)
GF's XC MTB - $1.7k (Shimano LX/XT)
My XC MTB - $1k (SS so no money on gears) :D
New XC MTB for the GF on order - $2k (SRAM 9.0 and equivalent)

I would hate to even consider the money spent over the years. We both have commuted heaps so there are savings on petrol etc. Plus also fitness benefits of course.
You've shown more restraint than your GF, or does she get to spend more than you because you have the extra dirt bike?

Me:
Rigid MTB A$1300.
Maintenance over 14 years: chainrings, BBs, clusters, chains, hubs, tyres, new forks x2: who knows?
Road bike A$2500
Dualie MTB :A$665
Upgrades for MTB: A$1250
Tools: at least A$500
Miscellaneous: unknown, and probably large amount.

GF:
rigid MTB A$400
maintenance: less than mine, but several hundred A$ over 14 years.
flat bar road bike A$1400
upgrades: >A$330

Children (1 and 4): <$20 so far (lots of free stuff on the roadside on council collection nights)

The total is probably meaningless, as there would be so many sundries I have left out.

As little as possible while still maintaining a good level of quality. It is the 'it'll cost less in the long run' theory.

Road singlespeed (my personal favourite for value):
frame $0, Great WA Bike Ride
Cranks: $25 track cranks and BB
Chain: Izumi Econo $20 (awesome track chain)
Paint: $40
Biopace 42t: $0
All other parts: $20
Ride quality, fun, hours of building and rebuilding parts and satisfaction: priceless

MTB: GT Avalanche 2 made into singlespeed, $520 + $20 for carbon bar ends (weighs a mere 10kg)

Racing bike: my pride and joy: proabably around $3500-$4000 including clothes and shoes.

Lets say $4500

1998 $110, Walmart hardtail MTB, lasted two months
1999 $400, Giant hardtail MTB, lasted 6 years
2005 $2200, Specialized Roubaix
2005 $1400, Specialized FSRxc
2006 $420, three open pro wheels
2006 $900, Ultegra 10sp drivetrain conversion
2006 $1028, powertap open pro wheel

Miscellaneous, saddles, tires, the rest. Probably around another $1000

Time off my 5k run time, 2 min 20 sec

Weight loss: 30 lbs

Years to my life... priceless.

My best friend got back into cycling late last year(he'd been a commuter in previous years).
I picked out a secondhand bike to buy(a Lemond Nevada). He got it for $850. It came with some clothes and amazingly - shoes that fit him:) .
I sold him a secondhand helmet and some tops of mine. He bought drink bottles, long mudguards for rainy days(only) and some lights.
Since getting it he's commuted the 19 hilly kilometres to work and 19 home almost every work day(saving about $60 a week in fuel in his 2 litre Skyline - manual coupe - nice)(he gets to work and home faster past the crawling cars).
He's also been building up his weekend mileage so he's done 3 160km rides in his preparation for the Round Lake Taupo(160kms) at the end of this month.

He has no desire for a second or replacement bike, a trainer, lighter wheels....blah, blah blah.
Why can't I be like that....
