Ah, but were you in there with him?? I mean I've pulled a real LR out of
a quagmire with a 195x Ford Popular, but I was still on the tarmac at
    the time. 8>.

    the leather seats.

Yes - much as I like leather seats, I wouldn't want them in a vehicle
that was being used for muddy walkers, dogs, kids covered in horse,
    etc.

at least they wipe clean better than fabric seats!

I was thinking of the Defender, Fran, when I said that. The Discovery
does in fact feature in the local school run near to me. It is an
absolute necessity when the mother lives 250 yards away and has to
traverse a road with a less than perfect surface.

There are so many ruddy road humps and 'cushions' surrounding my home
that it's a tough decision NOT to have one of these monsters.

Lemme see now - if I swap my MK2 Mondeo for a MK3, the track is an inch
or so wider, so it will straddle the cushions better, but on the other
hand, with all the cars parked in the road I often have to go between
two cushions, so maybe the new Focus would be best.

Had a quick shuftie at one last week.
Oh [censored]! The new Focus is (unbelievably) wider than the Mk 3 Mondeo.

toilets in newly built houses have to be wheel-chair accessible
    (Building Regs)

How about a sense of proportion...?

Oh, I think this makes sense. And it won't take much extra work/expense.

I'd like to see the building regs stipulate that all buildings must have
their name or road number displayed in 3 inch high contrast numerals at eye
level, plus on gate posts, etc.

This would improve 999 service response times.

    Sorry - OT!

  13. My favourite Landrover incident was in Perth, when an E-type Jaguar
hit a Landrover head on. The E-type's front was badly crumpled, one of
its front wheels was squint, and it wasn't drivable. The Landrover had
a smashed headlight and possibly some extra paint damage and slight
denting in addition to its usual scars, but it was hard to tell, and
after the police had taken their notes, it smugly dragged the Jag off
    to a nearby garage.

Somebody drove into the back of my Land Rover last year. It was a
typical slow speed shunt at a roundabout and, from the jolt, I was
expecting some damage. I turned off the engine, got out and strode
round to the back ready to rip the nitwit's head off. However, three
things happened which diffused the situation:

    1. He immediately said "Sorry, that was all my fault".

    2. I could only see a teeny tiny scrape on my car

and 3. His car was all smashed up! The bumper was cracked and the
bonnet was like a big red concertina thingy. I'm not sure I helped
the situation by pointing and laughing "Ha ha! Look at your car!".

I took mine to be checked over and there was nothing out of alignment
    or needing repair.

This is not a comment about lady drivers, but on one occasion when
stopped behind a Morris Minor at traffic lights on Red, when the lights
changed to green, the lady driver of the MM reversed into my Landrover.
There was hardly any speed involved but she got out and with some
concern asked me if I was allright. We both looked at the 6"x3"
channel which passed for a front bumper and we agreed everything was OK.
She luckily hadn't damaged her MM at all.

  19. Have you found the British Standard for gates, gaps and stiles?

Its BS5709:2001 and you can get it off the internet.

    Basically it says:
    - if you don't need a stile then you should have a kissing gate.
    - if you don't need a kg then you should have a swing gate.
    - if you don't need a sg you should have a gap.

It also gives specs for all the above and give examples of dog gates, etc.

    Cheers
