Oh, boy - all I can say to that is, "if you say so." I cannot begin to imagine trying to get all
the wedding [censored] done around the holidays. The WLO and I got married late in the wedding season
(really late, actually,) and it was still a solid month before time of "stuff that needs to get
done." Add Thanksgiving and Christmas into all that and I, for one, would have probably
    imploded.

what did you do, have a Martha Stewart extravangaza with a catered dinner for 200?

pot luck, bluegrass and a campground. Think simple.

I initially read this as "pot, luck, bluegrass and a campground". Which would be fine, too,
    depending on your guest list.

I went to one of those! About 10 years ago, Santa Fe :-)

    What's a WLO?

"Wife-Like Object" can include any person with whom you check before

    Quoted message said:

catch-all that's more funny and has a wider scope than "significant other."

We had people pushing for us to get married just before Christmas this year, as people were
already more or less gathered together, but we balked at the idea of having an anniversary during
a family holiday time. We wanted to have an anniversary date where we could feel free to
disappear by ourselves for a few days.

No, we haven't figured out when that would be, not quite yet ...

15Mar. Nothing nearby, and historically significant, to those who have studied Rome. A little
    inside joke between married folks.

22Mar. Vernal Equinox - the beginning of Spring and of new life. Symbolic. But if you want to plan
for a big shindig, these dates are really on the outside of getting it all done in time. 2.5
months goes by in an eyeblink.

rather Pagan date suggestions from someone who "grew up in the Church" don't you think? Penny

small is good. Just remember it's YOUR wedding, not your mother's. Plus with small, you
theoretically don't have to go into debt for a frickin' party. We rented a group campground, had a
pot luck ( food) had a blue grass band. OTOH, my hubbys sister spent 25K ( or rather the parents
did) on sit down dinner for 350 at the Claremont country Club.

My mom's only input was, "I want to be there." Pretty reasonable.

I've known people who've dropped serious money on weddings. It amazes me. Some people dream all
their lives of a beautiful wedding; I never had any plans of getting married at all. Maybe that
makes it easier to go small. When it comes to the money thing, though, I just can't see putting
myself into that kind of debt for a wedding; and there is absolutely no way that I would ask my
retired parents to spend a red cent when I have a perfectly good income.

Eric and I would be married today if we could just go do it. Planning it, though, even just as far
as picking a date and deciding who to invite -- ugh! A necessary evil. At least we have the rings
... we've had them for months.

I think we will probably have a very small JoP wedding followed by a nice meal with a few friends.
Then later in the year, we'll have a big ol' party and invite gobs of people. That way, we still
get to celebrate, but without all the pressure.

like I said before, google Bridezilla for a few grins. Oh, and " ettiquette hell" while you
    are at it.

My momzilla had a hard time remembering which of us liked what.

<plaintively> "But I thought you wanted to wear your hair up...."

"No, Mom, *you* wanted me to wear my hair up."

"But that dress has a sweetheart neckline. I thought you liked high-necked Gibson Girl
    style dresses."

"No, Mom. That was you again. Sorry."

I've already told my own daughter that we'll set aside a certain amount for a wedding. If she spends
less, or better yet, elopes, she gets whatever is left for a nest egg.

AFAIK, Monique isn't looking for a churchy type date. Unlike some Christian folk, I recognize that
stuff exists outside of the church calendar. (Which actually begins the last Sunday in Nov.) 😉

I'm just a touch too superstitious to go for the Ides of March. "Don't tempt fate" and all that.

Heh. Only Caesars have problems with that date, LOL.

This one sounds good. In fact, I think I'm going to suggest it to Eric. Thank you!

    You're welcome.

    Quoted message said:

No worries on time, I don't think; we're going to invite not even a handful of people when we go
to a justice of the peace. If the people can't come, we'll go through with it anyway. We're trying
to give people enough time to plan for travel, though.

But maybe I'm naive. I've never done this before!

Well, we had a real church service (like the hour-long kind with a sermon and everything) and a sit-
down full-meal reception and hosted beer/wine bar for 120. In addition, a pro photographer and a pro-
made cake. If we'd have farmed every last thing out and paid for every detail to be addressed, it
would have been much less work. But the cost would have doubled. As it was, we kept the costs pretty
darned low - less than $5k, and no debt was incurred. From what I have heard (after the fact), it
sounds as though we pulled off a miracle. But we did a lot of the footwork ourselves, and we didn't
go nuts over all the [censored] that folks go nuts over. Napkins with our names on them? WTF? Why in the
HELL would anyone do that? Sheesh.

Now, for an operation of the type you are looking at, it seems that you'd be looking at not much
more hassle than planning a big weekend party. Keeping it simple will certainly reap rewards in the
"stress-reduction" arena. And it saves dough for a killer honeymoon. Paging Sorni!

Intriguing. The problem is, I've met far too many people who passive-aggressively whine about
having to do what the wife says, the wife always gets her way, etc. So any hint of that business
leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, I don't like it much either. It *is* pretty funny, in a sick way. Especially for those couples
where you know the woman is generally in charge, and the guy is just along for the ride. (Shut up
    Baker, Sorni, Rimmer, et. al.)

Quite true! Churches wouldn't work for us; I'm pretty sure most churches want you to have some
affiliation to them before they let you get married in their establishments.

translation... you just need to give $$.

Derives I think from the late 19th Century classic adventure book, "She" by H. Rider Haggard. Was
    later made into a movie.

I've got a 03 P1(MSRP $500, got it for $400) and couldn't be happier with it! For the parts that come on it i.e. the Tru-Vativ cranks, bars, stem and Hayes rear disc, Specialized sealed bearing cassette disc rear hub, and Marzocchi fork (I'll give that this isn't the best bomber made), DiaCompe Tank headset, etc. you'd spend over $300 for those parts(or comparable parts). I think the 100 or so extra for the frame isn't to bad!
And the frame has different geometry from the hardrock series which does indeed make a difference in the value of the frame even if they are made from the same material!
My .02 cents take it or leave it.
