My family is playing croquet. Mom is the "Yellow Streak," and always
gets the yellow mallet and ball.
They're not gone, they're just where we can't see them yet

Talked to Mom... she pan-fried sea scallops in butter last night for their
dinner. YUM! I'm very lucky to still have both my parents even if Dad is
annoying at times.
I'm still munching on bacon, egg & cheddar cheese biscuits 🙂 Watching an
interesting show on PBS featuring Sammy Davis, Jr. singing in the 1950's and
early 60's. Shades of the "brat pack".

Fond rememberances of my mom and dad who have been long gone, too. And
my brother who left us the week before Christmas. The best medicine to
not sink into a profound sadness is work and being around people.

I Did Not Die
Do not stand at my grave and forever weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and forever cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

Here is a song that's close to my heart. It's taken out of context in
a CD that tells a story. Nicholas has been mourning the loss of
Victoria.
The Spirit Carries On - Dream Theater
Music by Dream Theater - Lyrics by John Petrucci
Nicholas:
Where did we come from?
Why are we here?
Where do we go when we die?
What lies beyond?
And what lay before?
Is anything certain in life?
They say, "Life is too short,
the here and the now"
And "You're only given one shot"
But could there be more?
Have I lived before?
Or could this be all that we've got?
If I died tomorrow
I'd be all right
Because I believe
That after we're gone
The spirit carries on
I used to be frightened of dying
I used to think death was the end
But that was before
I'm not scared anymore
I know that my soul will transcend
I may never find all the answers
I may never understand why
I may never prove
What I know to be true
But I know that I still have to try
If I died tomorrow
I'd be all right
Because I believe
That after we're gone
The spirit carries on
Victoria:
"Move on, be brave
Don't weep at my grave
Because I am no longer here
But please never let
Your memory of me disappear"
Nicholas:
Safe in the light that surrounds me
Free of the fear and the pain
My questioning mind
Has helped me to find
The meaning in my life again
Victoria's real
I finally feel
At peace with the girl in my dreams
And now that I'm here
It's perfectly clear
I found out what all of this means
If I died tomorrow
I'd be all right
Because I believe
That after we're gone
The spirit carries on

This one's a bit maudlin, perhaps, but still one of my favorites.
Funeral Blues
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let Aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I though that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
W. H. Auden
Another Time, 1940
On another note, my mother was a very beautiful woman. I'm not prejudiced,
as everyone thought so. I once wrote the following to her as she was
getting older...
Glimpses of beauty
as the years speed by.....
Are my memories of
You.

Oh, you know, a son's prejudice about his mother's beauty. Children are
often prejudiced about their parents' qualities, real or imagined.
When my parents lived in Los Angeles County, California during the late
1930s and early 1940s, my mother was approached several times by film
studio reps to have a screen test. She had no desire. She looked quite a
bit like Baraba Stanwyck, only actually prettier.

I feel impelled to pipe in and say that I do believe that people who
died are dead and gone, not in heaven, not where I'm going to see them
later, and that doesn't detract from my love for them, or make me
sadder. If anything, it makes me all the more determined to have a
good life, because it's the only life I get.
(Please understand that I'm not denigrating those of you who believe
you will see your loved ones in some later life -- just sharing that
that's not the way it is for me.)
