OB Food: breakfast yesterday was hashbrowns from fresh potatoes,
ham-bacon sausage patties from the pigmeat guy and french toast from
homemade bread. Pretty tasty.

Barb, I thought of you last week when I was on vacation.
We ate at the motel a couple of times. There dinners are
'complete', meaning it comes with soup or salad, dessert,
etc etc, and one choice you had to make was vegetable.
You could hear all the tables around you getting the same
questions.

Both nights it was (whatever vegetable) or beets. Every
time the people would say (whatever vegetable)! the
instant the waiter got out the whole word Beets.

So funny, they way they'd emphasize it so there was no
mistake. Don't want to chance winding up with dirt
chunks on our plate.

Idaho . . . we've had unusually cold weather for this time of year. We've
had nights of 37F, but no frost. I can usually count on the end of October
before a freeze. Generally we would have mid-70's now, but it's only been
high 50's - low 60's.

Are you kidding, with six cats I was lucky to get some... they can eat
faster than I can slice... I think they ate more than half.

My cauliflower and cabbage were small this year but still very good.

But my first attempt at growing celery surprised me, what a difference
from store bought, a rich aroma, remarkable flavor, and it's the
crunchiest! And I have five more still in the ground. Now I need to
perfect my celery growing, I need to plant them much closer together,
I found out that they grow more compact if they touch and they will
also self blanch... the one necessity however is a long growing season
(5 months) and plenty of water. I think anyone can grow celery, needs
very little space, a square foot will easily grow four bunches. So
now we know what to plant in that wet spot.

Interestingly, in the late 19th century my Chicago nabe of Lakeview was
dubbed "The Celery Capital of the Midwest" because of the plethora of celery
farms. Immigrant Germans and Scandinavians had truck farms growing celery,
potatoes, cabbage, etc. and it was shipped all over the place. It's
adjacent to Lake Michigan, somewhat sandy soil and access to plenty of
water...all those farms are long - gone, along with all the breweries and
beer gardens that once dotted the area :-(

Although I grew up in the rural Midwest and everyone had a garden, I've
never seen celery actually growing, it was always something that was
purchased in a store...'though I remember my mom saying they grew it in the
20's - 30's.
