Wish I could do that. But, the Italian woman across the street made a face
when I offered tomatoes. Said she hates them.

I guess just saying No thanks wasn't an option.

I wish my neighbors would offer me tomatoes, no one has
vegetable gardens, though. I didn't grow tomatoes this year,
far too busy last spring. Next year. And I'm planting that
lettuce leaf basil people talked about, too.

Price Chopper - this explains some of your comments about your local
stores. Any others nearby? Grand Union?

Price Chopper (www.pricechopper.com ) is the largest grocery chain in
this area (Capital Region of New York State).

Second largest is Hannaford. Grand Unions most all went out of business
    in this area years ago.

Where's "this area", Van? I have a rough idea of where Sheldon is.

The name Price Chopper really is a misnomer. They're a regular grocery
chain, not one of those "price-Rite" type of grocery depots.

I just saw a Price Choppers in Troy last week. Route 9, I think.
I'd heard of it and wondered if it was a regular grocery store or
    what it was.

Thanks to the McDonald's right nearby that let me use
    their men's room. Heh.

Whatever. No more Grand Unions here. Just Price Chopper & Hannaford
supermarkets (-or- 'stupidmarkets' as Shel would say)

We *DO* have other, independent, butcher shops & produce distributors, as
well as Oriental, Indian, Italian and other ethnic stores.

For a couple of years, I patronized a Price Chopper in Binghamton NY (a
strange little town). It reminded me of some Tops stores here in Rochester,
best described by my son and a friend of his when they were 15. Tops used to
have an ad jingle that went something like "Tops never stops...giving you
more". Occasionally, I'd end up at a Tops with the kid and his friend, and
at the time, it was their job to shock adults, smell bad and laugh at pretty
much anything. In the store, they'd follow me around, singing "Tops never
    mops...look at the floor!"

    It was true.

Not to mention the Rot Gut Vodka. That stuff is $6.50/750ml a
bottle here. It's what the winos drink. It's the cheapest they

You should take less pictures because they sure don't back up all

Binghamton - know it well. Was born & spent the first 30 years of my life
in Ithaca (about 35 miles northwest of Binghamton). In fact, used to work
(mid-'60's) at a place called Gerber Music in Vestal (suburb).

There's something very....wrong in that town. Half the old folks have faces
that are indistinguishable from potatoes. People drive down Main St going 6
mph, 24x7, for no apparent reason. It's like the living dead. And, I haven't
seen so much big hair on women since moving away from Queens.

I defy you to tell the diff between Rot Gut & Absolut or Grey Goose when
    mixed as Sheldon described.

In Fact, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives-which sets the rules for spirits sold in the United States-vodka
is defined as a neutral spirit "without distinctive character, aroma, taste
    or color."

Now, while I'm sure a vodka aficionado could discern differences in neat
shots, when mixed, it's darn hard to tell a difference.

Now, myself, on the other hand - I prefer Scotch. And, yes, while you *CAN*
easily tell a difference between most brands, as well as blended and
    single-malt, **I** prefer a bar-brand (Clan MacGregor) for it's taste.
Prefer it over Dewar's, Johnny Walker, and yes, even Chivas Regal. (All
served only on the 'rocks', BTW.

My taste may be in my ass, you may be right. But the brand *I* happen to
like is *HALF* the cost of Dewar's. Just happens that way. I figure I
lucked out. More $$ for porterhouse steaks that way!
