Is road cycling dangerous?

Unless she was driving as part of the course of her employment, probably none. The situation with Catholic priests abusing kids all evolved out of the priests performing priestly duties. There the diocese was liable. Especially where they were aware of what the priests had done previously and transferred them to another parish instead of defrocking them. Here, it's hard to see how the diocese gets held accountable for her acts. She would have been just as big a risk to everyone on the road as Ms. Cook as Bishop Cook. Take away her tiara (or whatever those hats are called, mitres, maybe?) and she still drives gassed to the gills.

Never driving another day in her life would be the minimum I would ask. 10 years for vehicular homicide sounds about right. Being state charges, she would probably serve 3 or 4 years.

I know 95% of humanity is below average (The scientifically established and world reknowned Campy Curve), but how dumb is an individual to get back behind the wheel in the same condition she had already been *****-slapped for doing? Google Santambrogio's recent doping bust WHILE already serving a ban for a prior doping bust and she's in THAT category of Special Stoopid.
Named in a suit and advancing a theory of liability are two separate issues. Rule # 1 is go for the deepest pockets and If the church wanted to keep it's name out of a suit they might roll over and throw out some money early but I doubt they would name the church since both defendants would be involved in the same case and tried at the same time. Who wants a vague claim against a church?
Punitive damages can be obtained when gross negligence is established, like driving impaired, so multiplying the compensatory loss goes out the window and "the sky is the limit" applies unless the state has a limiting statute on punitive damage claims. I would guess she carried a 1 mil standard liability auto policy and I agree a claim would probably be filed as "policy limit".
One issue is that you can't ask for the death penalty in a civil proceeding like this one or divorce. Dang shame!

God was her co-pilot.

Most drivers there carry a standard 1 million liability? Wow. Most up here carry 100K/300K, and the legal minimum is $40/80K.

I saw a news report today that the bombed bishop is 5'7" and weighs 250. That's a lot of bishop, and a lot of booze to get to .22. She also had a court hearing today, and the judge refused to lower her $2.5 million bail.

You are a correct that it could be 100-300 K policy. With the life expectancy of a male at around 78 years and calculating loss of income, consortium , and other compensatory damages the claim could run a million or better without punitive damages and that's why attorneys look for deeper pockets. Much of the time an attorney will wait to see how the criminal charges shake out before pushing the civil suit. Besides the statute is 3 years in Maryland so plenty of time to ponder the issue.

Bail remains the same—$2.5 million—for the Episcopal church bishop charged in the December drinking and driving death of a Baltimore bicyclist.

Prosecutors asked the judge to revoke bail. That didn’t happen, but for now, the bishop remains locked up. Her attorney says she’s unlikely to be able to come up with the $2.5 million needed to post bail.

Fifty-eight-year-old Episcopal church Bishop Heather Cook does have an alcohol problem, her attorney told a district court judge at her Monday bail review hearing. Cook’s attorney said after the fatal accident that killed bicyclist and father of two Thomas Palermo, Cook spent 12 days at Father Martin’s Ashley: a posh, non-denominational rehab facility in Havre de Grace, which boasts online of its treatment programs for alcoholism and drug addiction.

“And we integrate the science of medicine with the art of therapy in a spiritual environment,” said Father Martin.

Cook turned herself into police Friday when new city state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby filed charges, including manslaughter and DUI, saying Cook had a blood alcohol level of .22, nearly three times the legal limit, and that she was texting when her car struck Palermo as they traveled in the same direction on Roland Avenue December 27.

“It is alleged that Cook failed to remain at the scene of the accident and continued south on Roland Avenue. Roughly 30 minutes later, she returned to the scene,” Mosby said.
Prosecutors called Cook a flight risk and asked that she be held without bail. The judge denied that request but also refused to lower Cook’s bail as requested by her attorney, saying she showed a careless indifference to life by leaving the scene of the accident.

Cook’s next court hearing is set for February 6; that is likely to be postponed.

Cook said nothing during her court appearance Monday afternoon.

Looks like just the place for penitential reconciliation after you mow down a husband and father while soused out of your skull. They probably issue sackcloth and ashes robes. Don't be put off by the luxurious appearance. Inside, it probably makes Marion Federal Prison look posh.

Your honor, my client spent 12 days at this hellhole praying every moment for the soul of the departed. Please, she's suffered enough. Set her free to resume God's work.

Heads up Marylanders. The good bishop is now a free woman, at least temporarily. No driving as a condition of her release. I have faith. I mean, she abides by the law that says no driving while drunk, after all.

Woah! Who knew? Rehab for the rest of us!

Looks like their treatment plan works!

Kindly ol' Father Martin, himself. Yeah...he was a boozer too.

Ah yes...nausea! That's what caused her to puke in the bong.

If Amy had a sweet deal like that...she might have goooo, goooo, goooo!

Only two DUI's...one pending Vehicular Homicide...Felony Fleeing the Scene of an Accident with Injuries...yeah, I can see her getting bail.

Remember that 20-something bimbo up in Quebec that stopped her car in the left lane of a high-speed divided highway to shoo some ducks off the road...and a motorcyclist struck her parked car and killed himself and his daughter? Been about four years ago. She got 10 years of no driving and 90 days of doing weekends in jail...probably get half of that suspended...and 240 hours of community service.

Da preacha' lady only killed one. So...five years without a license...30 days in the hole...and maybe has to submit to mandatory booze tests for a year or two.

Say...all you Euros...any bookmakers over there giving odds on her sentence? I've got a few extra Drachmas and I'm feeling lucky.

At least our rednecks drive diesel brodozers, wear flat bills and would have jumped out with a Bud in one hand and can of dip in the other...with a proper mullet, of course.

Say...did you guys read about the cyclist in Beverly Hills that shot a businessman slash "tycoon" (I always wanted to be a tycoon...or a magnate...or at least a captain of industry) that was sitting in his Roll-Royce? Must have been the 99% type.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2914548/Manhunt-underway-cyclist-shot-property-tycoon-sat-wheel-Rolls-Royce-LA.html

It happened on Sunset Boulevard...I'm sure there's a rock song hiding in this story...

Here we see a parked car example of how the other half lives:

And here we see one of the perks a tycoon has:

No...not the solar panels, you jackasses!

"The LAPD have now launched a manhunt for the shooter who was last seen by witnesses on a on a bike wearing a baseball cap and carrying a ruck sack."

If the description would have included "shimaNO" I could suggest a perp!

"Businessman: Mr Segal is the CEO of Williams Holdings property and acquisitions, one of the largest apartment complex owners in Los Angeles. He was interviewed by 11 News about solar panels in 2013."

So...property...L.A. ...that's what it takes to be tycoon!

Those are insanely high car accident insurance policy limits. Most Floridian drivers are underinsured, and cannot drive.

As a Florida cyclist, I do not think road cycling is safe near me. We just had a cyclist die in a bike accident on a bridge in Miami by some drunk a** who drove away. Been doing my research and it appears that Florida is the most dangerous state in the US for bicycle riders. Sucks. I don't think I will be letter my son bike next to me on the street anywhere in Florida.

Here's to hope we have raised, separated, dedicated bike lanes in the sunshine state! But I doubt it...

We call Florida god's waiting room. Millions of blue hairs driving dazed and confused and intent on making the early bird special. I wouldn't live there on a bet.

I'm just trying to get to the Sunday morning worship service $1 Margarita's at the Mermaid Lounge in Fort Myers!

Deal!

It's only dangerous to those who think it's dangerous and ride scared all the time and thus being dangerous to others and themselves by the way they ride.
