  1. I've a tendency to complain about a section of road in Cambridge, where
traffic coming into the City Centre has priority over traffic coming out of
the city centre. There isn't room to safely have two lanes there (which is
why there is only one), which leads to the inevitable problem of motorised
traffic coming out of the city centre bullying cycles out of the way, and
cycles coming the same way trying to sneak through against the oncoming
    traffic (endangering themselves and others).

Coming in this morning (so with right of way), in the middle of the lane, a
small van chose to come right at me. He'd seem me, in fact he was waiting
behind the line at his side when I started through the section. So I slowed
to a near stop, waiting for him to do likewise, and as he did I moved to the
side of the lane to lean over the road. I've been through the whole asking
them to reverse thing, I've been through this with the local bobbiesa and
got nowhere, and as a result of not simply capitulating and choosing an
option that's either illegal (cycling on the pavement) or dangerous
(scooting down the side of an oncoming vehicle) I've been abused, threatened
and actually assaulted on this section; this morning, though, I simply
    didn't have the energy.

Not content with having forced me aside in this way, the van driver opened
opened his door into my path while still moving , hitting my front wheel and
yelling something about how much f$*&ing room I needed.

I've reported this kind of thing to the local plod in the past and nothing
happens. The local road planners, our County Council, see no problem here.
The cycling officers of boththe City and County Councils can do nothing. Yet
this kind of thing is a daily event. Next come the Cambridge Cycling
Campaign; if any of those guys read this group (I'm sure you do) then expect
me to be in touch; I hope you guys might be interested in getting a little
proactive over this stretch of road.

I'm posting here simply out of frustration. Times like this make me want to
hurl my bike into a skip.

That sounds to me like attempted assault and dangerous driving.

Just another typical incident in Blairs' Britain. I hate what this
country is becoming. Who's for starting a cycling commune in Canada?

My parents visited canada this year. I've heard nothing but how
wonderful cycling facilities are over there - loads of cycle paths etc
(shared with joggers, rollerbladers, peds, etc). And how little traffic
    is on the roads.

I'm still trying to get across the point that cycle paths can be a lot
more dangerous, or don't get you where you want to go if you're cycling
to/from a destination, even if they are nice for leisure cycling - I'm
past the stage of pootling along a cycle path slowly (yay!).

The idea does have merit though - but I'm not about to emigrate till
I've visited the country, and that's a long way from happening ;-)

I agree, it's unlikely any kind of conviction will result but if you have the van registration report it. The police will have to investigate to a degree and at least the driver will be made aware of your complaint and will think twice about his behaviour in future. I feel your frustration but don't let it slide.

That's assuming I can even get the girl at the desk in the police station to
take the report ("we can take the details down, but it's unlikely that any
of our officers will take the time to do anything... there's no point really
reporting this..."😉. It simply doesn't seem to be the case that the driver
    will be made aware.

Then complain about it. The police are /your/ servants and are

Well, it ain't all that great in some places. Several provinces have helmet
laws, and one (BC) even makes it illegal to ride a fixed gear cycle on the
    road.

Shocking attitude which leads to contempt for the law.

I don't suppose turning to leave and saying something like "that's all right
then, nex time I'm assaulted I'll just shoot him and burn the body" would go
    down too well.

Would the local paper like that. "Cyclists fair game as police refuse to
    crack down on assaults".

If being polite doesn't work, then ridicule might.

Having been to various bits of Britain, it's worse than the UK for cycling
    IMO

    a) Presumption that cyclists should be off the road in a lot of places
    b) Lots of serious snow and ice in winter
    c) Many of the cities suffer from urban sprawl, making transport cycling
less practical. It's less of a problem in the core of the older cities,
but these are frequently not very salabrious.

I'm working on that one. Currently badgering my parents to sell up and
move across the water. Then I'd _obviously_ have to go and help with any
renovations as well as ensuring that they'd settled in OK. With every
child that gives my mum grief at work they get one step closer.

I'm not in any hurry to come back from Japan. In fact I think I'd
probably to have to give up reading u.r.c for several months before I

There comes a point when you start to feel like you're getting nowhere. When
you've got your MP involved, the County Council traffic planners, cycling
officers for both the city and county councils, the city mayor (who was
really supportive), and you've complained to the relevant city centre police
seargant and inspector, and nothing has happened, you might start feeling
like the situation is a little hopeless.

It isn't lack of wanting to change things that has made me not report this
one to the Police, it's having the experience to know that reporting this
    will accomplish nothing.

Our local paper is usually thought of by cyclists as being rather cycle
unfriendly; were I to suggest a headline like that I doubt they'd see the
    irony.

    1000 cyclists killed every year - that's what it's like! :o(

    Not a very helpful statistic.

What percentage is that? Deaths per mile?

Japan could have 0 cyclists killed per year, but be awful for cycling
(if it didn't have a cyclists).

Absolute numbers are pretty useless here.
