Japan could have 0 cyclists killed per year, but be awful for cycling

behaviour. It's the total number, ignoring any aspects of mileage etc.

A huge proportion of whom are astonishingly old, and therefore probably
rather vulnerable to what would seem like a gentle tumble to most
younger cyclists. I would not be surprised to find that many deaths do
not involve any motor vehicle at all.

Especially as IIRC, they only count if they die within 24hrs of the
accident otherwise its counted as natural causes.

It sounds like "opening a car door to danger" which is an offence under
the road vehicles construction and use regulations 1986. Heaven knows what
section though as I've only ever used it once. Summary offence.
Was there any damage to your bike, did you get witnesses names. If you
have no other information as above you may have to live with it. If as
you assert it happens often claim to be injured next time in which case
plod will have to attend. Once they attend decline medical aid. Said
offending driver must remain at the scene or commit an offence of failing
to remain at the scene of an accident.

Tokyo mostly. I have a friend who is marrying a Japanese woman, so
we've over for the wedding. We'll get a few days to get out of
Tokyo and go somewhere: either Koyto or somewhere else old and
scenic to be decided....

Kyoto isn't old and scenic which surprises most people. Its a low rise
concrete city with pockets of old and scenic tucked away in it. Still
very worth the visit and if you can register ahead of time to go to the
Imperial palaces of Sento Gosho and Katsura Rikyu. Otherwise a nice
place a bit off the foreign tourist track is Takayama

Koyto will be quiet: everyone else will be going to Kyoto instead ;-)
Or else Kamakura, where I live, which has the whole town centre shut
to motorised vehicles due to the weight of people visiting.

The trains will be hell wherever you go, but that is all part of the
fun!

If this is happening regularly, mount a camcorder on the bike and record
that section every day. Report anything that happens to plod as usual.
Edit all the incidents on tape onto a master. After a month, send
copies of the edited tape, plus all the reports you've made to the
police, to everyone from the Home Secretary, local Chief Constable,
local papers, national papers, TV news, prime minister's office, cycle
groups, and the EU transport bod, asking what they're going to do about
this lawlessness.
