Did You Ride Today?

Just 12 miles this afternoon in chilly 43 degree air. The sky was overcast and a light mist was in the air when I started. I only rode at a 16 MPH average tempo and relaxed for most of the cruise. Only 400' of climbing so an easy effort all around.

OK, JH, what's your fitness plan for this week? Still doing the weight circuit on your home gym? I hope you're feeling better every day!

Yes on both counts. I saw the ortho last Friday and told him I could walk without crutches and he said NO. The worst fracture that went all way to the hip joint and back is doing great. That is the one they were concerned about but he noted it was healing twice as fast as normal. The sit bone fracture is not doing as well probably due to me sitting in an office chair too soon and too much. I go back on the 11th and hope he gives me the go ahead to resume training, at least on the trainer.
The worst is behind me now, at least as far as pain and mobility issues.

You know what you must do...kick his ass, sea bass!

Sit bone fracture? Your pelvis must have been THE impact area to slap the road when you went down! Maybe another 1/2-week or week out of the office is what the doctor ordered. Relaxing by crystal clear blue ocean water...WARM water!...on the beach. With a drink in your hand.

Any good ortho will prescribe warm, soft, giving sand as the best medicine. It spreads the weight of the body out and molds to your shape. Trust me. You'll heal much fast on St. Johns!

I have actually considered waiting until I am roadworthy and taking a week to rehab and claw my way back. I would rather go when I am fully mobile but yes my hip and pelvis took 95 percent of the impact. If I had had time to unclip the injury would have been different. I am also fairly certain that the owners of the dog don't a proverbial pot to **** in. A letter will be sent either way.

If I had had time to unclip the injury would have been different.

I've hit three mutts.

Mutt No. 1 I had time to grab two fistfuls of brake and go, "Oh shi...". I hit him square and went down fairly easy. The fork blade folding up the next day and splatting my face on the road at 2 MPH hurt worse. Campy standard road pedals and Campy toe clips and Binda straps...don't remember if I got a foot out or not.

Mutt No. 2 ran into my front wheel and the judge from Vulgaria gave my forward flip with a half twist a 9.5. The chip & seal was like a cheese grater. Zero time to react. I hurt for a couple weeks after that one. I landed in a tangle with the bike, one foot blown out of the clipless Campy SGR pedal IIRC.

Mutt No. 3 was similar to No. 2. He was a black blur and I was down before I knew what happened. 27 X-Ray's, nothing broken. One foot blown out of the clipless Campy Pro Fit pedal.

Your mutt did more damage to you than all three of mine combined!

I have had similar encounters. One dog hit my back wheel on two separate occasions enough to knock me sideways. I actually went upon the back of a large hound type mutt and managed to maintain by balance. This one was so sudden and unexpected that I had no time to adjust.

Another lightweight 12-mile training sprint. I guess it's better than sitting on the rollers in the basement!

A cold 45 degrees and very overcast with light drizzle for the last couple of miles. The wind was a Wintery 14 to 18 MPH with gusts blasting in at 25 to 28 MPH. Not exactly a sunny June afternoon cruise!

I noticed an inordinate amount of horse **** on the roads and a bunch of Amish families walking or taking the buggy to one of the local Amish farms. I asked an Amish father that was walking down the road with a son at his side if it was a wedding or a funeral.

"Wedding.", he said.

Better than a funeral, I thought as I kicked for the car with the cold mist moving in with the evening.

Only 375' of climbing on this wussy ride, but I had fun and was glad to have another day to get out and smell the fresh air.

13 miles in 53 degree air and sunshine. Just a quick little blast with a mile of wheelsucking behind a big ol' Case tracker pulling a gravity wagon loaded with corn at 20 MPH. His turbo sounded good as he booted it through the ranges.

After riding I cleaned up and attended calling hours for a friend's wife. He died in 2006 at the age of 56 and she passed on Monday at 66. She was a good woman. I will miss them both.

I've been slacking...Decided to ride with the B+ club group and felt fine for the first 30. My conditioning seemed to fade after that. Held on until the last 3 when I had no more sprints to give. Was a hard ride, fun as well. The funny thing is, my technique felt very good today. Was confident on every corner and downhill and felt fine in the pack. Plan on going out early tomorrow for a 40 miler with the club again.

39.1 miles/2700 ft/17.5 mph/79 cadence

43 miles in sunny 73 degree air! Too bad the wind was running 16 to 20 MPH with gusts that just flattened me.

I ran into another couple of roadies about 15 miles from home. Other than that a nice, quiet ride with the wind noise roaring in my ears.

Right around 2100' of climbing and the hills were once again a blessing if they got me out of that damned wind. The cross winds were really pushing the bike around and the swirling nature was constantly forcing me to catch the bike and correct my line.

At least the sun was out and the air was almost...warm! Perfect! Let's ride!

22 miles in 50 degree air. The sun was out and the wind was a much less painful 7 to 8 MPH. Only 700' of climbing, but it felt good to be outside. Pretty much on cruise control and only a 16 MPH average. Only one effort of two miles so no huge suffer score or anything like that.

A local town I rode through was having trick or treat so I fit right in...

That was a long lay-off. Hadn't been on the bike since last Sunday when I slugged it out with the wind. In-between we've had four days of rain, and I've getting everything ready for winter. So today I finally had some time after work to get in 20 miles with several long climbs thrown in for fun. The temp was 51 degrees with an 8-10 mph wind, that seamed to make it feel worse. Went out and set an easy tempo on the climbs and tried to hammer out the descents, but never felt like I could get over the top of my gear.

11/01/2016: 25.2 Miles in warm 73 degree sunshine! It almost felt like Summer out there this afternoon! 1150' of climbing and a medium to high tempo workout. Just rolling terrain with two decent little climbs. The wind was a manageable 9 to 13 MPH. A beautiful afternoon for a ride!

The Wilier glided silently through the air and as long as kept out of the red the climbing was

11/02/2016: 27 miles in 76 degree sunshine! 1175' of climbing, so just rolling with two or three gut busting climbs. The wind was going 10 to 16 MPH, but for some reason it didn't work me over like it normally does.

The combines, grain carts, gravity wagons, dump trucks and semi's were rolling hard and fast getting the soybeans and corn off the fields. I did have to go right to the edge of the road to miss an oncoming combine. The tires were way taller than me and the John Deere looked huge from my bike seat closing at 40 MPH.

What a beautiful afternoon to ride...again!

I had time to get in a quick little 14-mile ride in 58 degree sunshine and the wind running 7 to 9 MPH.

The highlight of the ride was zooming around an Amish boy that was on his scooter bike...intently focused on his large smart phone...in the middle of a turn I was blasting through at 20 MPH in the oncoming lane.

I yelled, "On your left!" as I came up on him, but I think I scared the Swiss Cheese out of him...he whipped the bike across the berm and into a friend of mine's front yard.

I also stopped by another local Amish and inspected the construction of the young man's new barn...with living quarters to Winter in while he gets ready to build his new house next Spring. He was doing anice job of building box stalls and tie-in stalls. Talked a little with his younger brother. He used to live on my road before he bought land and built a new house.

21 miles in 53 degree air and sunshine! 725' of climbing...fun ride.

How you doing, JH? Doctor loosening the leash any yet?

I go back Friday but I can walk without crutches. Just haven't been cleared to as yet.

First ride of the week....Damn... 33.6 miles/17.1 mph/1550 ft/81 cadence.

Spent the first half of the ride spinning and the second pushing bigger gears. 50 degrees, sunny and windy. Most people I know are dreading daylights savings, but I'm glad. I'll get my 630 am miles in for another few weeks. Will start using the trainer around decemberish.
