Did You Ride Today?

Yeah. He averaged something like 372 miles per say! Toone and the other front runners were doing around 300 miles per day. How insane was that?! 4 wins for Strasser. Robic has 5.

I remember Lon Haldemann winning it and I actually saw John Marino come through Alliance, Ohio on his 1978 pre-Great American Bicycle Race (later to be re-named RAAM) solo crossing.

I got to ride with Lon and his wife, Sue, for a few miles and have been a fan of the American crossing record ever since.

89 degrees with more sunshine today. The wind was a little tougher at 16 to 20 MPH with gusts to 24 MPH.

I rode a controlled 26 miles with just under 1000' of climbing and did a couple stretches of power work. The legs were kind of flat, but I felt good and stayed focused on the work.

Ohio is so damned nice in the Spring and summer! Every ride has been spectacular!

75 degrees with heavy to moderate rain all day and into the night.

I hit the trainer for 41 minutes. 20 minutes of moderate tempo work and 20 minutes of rocking out with the tunes so loud they heard me in Bangalore.

Three fans going full tilt boogie, 68 degrees in the basement and I was soaked at the end of the session.

Great weather today 84 and humid with a kicker wind as a thunderstorm was approaching mid way threw the ride. I went and did a rolling 30 miles which included a spin on the new and old bike trails. This is the first time hat both trails were completely empty no walkers, bikers, or joggers. I think maybe it was the heat which meant didn't have to slow down for anyone, not even the geese were out.

I took the Reynolds out of hibernation, and it was good to get a good spin.

"Bloody Toenail Tour" ha ha!.............Accidentally kicked the foot board in the dark last night as I was getting into bed. Caught my little pinky toenail. Hurt like a mother! Didn't realize it but toenail broke or something. Paralyzing pain but I must have been tired cause I passed out 5 minutes later. Woke up in the morning to bloody sheets. Try putting a sock on that. Seemed like my toenail caught on every thread while making it's way through the sock.

But it was my only chance to ride alone today. Wife was busy, didn't hear from ride partners (not that I am broken hearted about it :p) so I headed off alone.

Pretty windy today. I stopped at a park to refill my water bottles. A guy I know saw me from a ways back earlier in the ride. He said he thought he might catch up but couldn't. If he had caught me in this headwind, I would have been impressed. I was pushing hard and doing 16 MPH. At one point I passed a couple of guys and I made a comment about the wind. Dude said maybe I can break the wind for them a little bit. They hopped on my wheel, I was doing 16 and 30 seconds later, they were 30 yards back. When you can't hold a wheel at 16, you know it's windy! :D

Solo 46.5 miles at 16.4 average today.

Spent the day at The Longsjo Classic the second oldest race in the US. This is day one of a two day race and part of the New England Crit race week. Went for a couple loops around the town before the race started and then spent the next 6 hours getting video of all the categories and switching bike throughout the event. I had both Zipp2001's available, the TT and SS. The cool part was I had several people come up to talk to me because they've watched my You Tube videos, and recognized the bikes. The temp was super mid 80's a tad humid and a fun little headwind on the front straight of the course. My gps had me for 43 miles, will be out at the races tomorrow.

I have been doing my usual 4 days a week pretty consistently. It was just about perfect yesterday , overcast for a while but the temps were ideal. Averaged 16.5 mph which is a large improvement over last week. I knew I didn't feel like riding that day but thought I would try. My wife rides this particular route with me every other week but she takes the flatter, shorter route to the turn around point. I was hurting badly when I got to the half way turn around and she convinced me to follow her back by the short cut. I slipped streamed her for a while but couldn't keep up. I made it back but it was all I could do to lift my bike onto the rack. I ended up laying down and sleeping for 3 hours. I had been ill since that Wednesday but a bike ride usually perks me up but that that time. I have said it before , "It's hell getting old".
On a side note I didn't attend the US TT and road race in Knoxville this past weekend but saw some of the teams on Friday doing a bit of training around the area.

What the Hell? My posts from Saturday, Sunday and Monday disappeared?

32 miles on Saturday. A tough little climbing ride with just under 1500' of vertical in 75 248 sunshine and moderate wind. First bee/hornet/wasp sting of the season. The little ******* flew into a helmet vent and zapped me in the forehead right at the hairline. No biggee.

52 miles on Sunday in insane winds! 16 to 20 MPH steady wind with gusts to 39 MPH. 2000' of climbing. That was a tough ride except for the few miles I had the wind square at my back. Then, it was try to keep up with the pedals.

Just a short 13-mile ride over flat terrain with some light rain yesterday. I started out fast and dialed it back a couple notches for the last half of the ride. The wind was fairly stiff at around 16 MPH steady.

Zipp, I also commented on your Lonsjo post, but that reply also vaporized. Weird.

I'm actually having a hard time with this site. I click on thread and it takes almost a minute to open up. That is following the trail or most recent post trails. Heck, took me 3 or 4 tries and finally about a minute to get this thread open.

Been that way for a few weeks now. The other sites I visit are mighty fast. Not sure what happened here.

Plus, I don't see any email notifications for a period of time then one day, I'll get like 15 informing me that one specific poster added some comments. Dated throughout the entire week.

Very strange behavior here! o_O

Weird, JH. I can't explain it. You know how regular I am with posting rides. If I don't have time or forget to post on the same day I always post it up the day after.

It hit 68 degrees here today. Kind of cool, but sunny! The wind wasn't too bad at 8 to 12 MPH.

Just a short 21-mile climbing ride with a little over 1200' of vertical and I railed it for all I was worth. I did my best to keep it right below 'Help me! I'm Blowing Up!' and I had to slow for recovery over the top of the worst climb. It all felt good though. No pain, no gain. And I felt plenty of pain, but in a good way.

It was very close to tying the course record despite the wind being less than optimum on the course and I did stop mid-hill to pick up a Craftsman U.S.A. ratcheting box wrench, size 1/2"! Bonus. Now...did the short stop and having to restart mid-climb slow me up a little or did the short recovery as I stashed the wrench in my jersey pocket allow me to pick up a few seconds on the last part of that climb? Meh...it was all just for fun any way!

75 degrees and sunshine today with the wind at 13 to 16 MPH.

And bee sting number TWO! Little ******* flew into my half-zipped jersey (oh so pro!) and stung me in the left sternum area, just above the heart rate sensor. They he flew off and I pulled the stinger out while riding with no hands at 20 MPH. Again...oh so ****ing pro!

Just a little 27-mile ride to shake out the cobwebs from yesterday's effort. It had more climbing than I needed at a little over 1400' worth, but I kept the worst of it at a sane tempo and stayed in the 39x25 on the steep stuff.

Ran into three old guys getting ready to bale hay with and old Massey-Fergusen, a New Holland Super 66 baler and a decrepit ol hay wagon. We all had a nice roadside chat and talked about a local old coot that was riding his TREK around dusk and while blinded by an oncoming car's headlights he rode his carbon fiber wonder smack into a mailbox and broke his arm! He's still riding! They told me he bought a new Corvette (already had owned several over the years ) and took it out to Vegas to drive on that new gazillion dollar race course they built for wealthy sports car owners to play on!

Got out for a very tough 22 miles from work to the bike shop and back dodging scattered thunderstorms and dealing with a killer wind. Leg's got beat up today and will enjoy an easy ride in the woods tomorrow with Gino.

Timed a page load this morning at just under 30 seconds. All other sites loading at their usual fast speeds.

Maybe the connection timed out before my posts from Sat., Sun. and Mon. hit the CF server? I'm no expert on the web. In the grand scheme of things...no big deal. Just weird as I swear I saw at least two of them posted after a screen refresh.

...and I thought I knew my tools...

I found a 1/2" open end/box end combination wrench this afternoon while out training. It was a brand I had never heard of before: Lectrolite 'Forged U.S.A.' and also marked 'Tru-Fit'. According to this: http://toolarchives.com/node/292 it was last manufactured in 1953. 64 years old at the least...same age as me! Lectrolite was a predecessor to what would become the well known S-K Wayne Tools and were made in Wisconsin and later in Defiance, Ohio. The wrench is in fair to good condition at best with only a little pitting in the open end jaws. Bonus!

It got up to 82 degrees with sunshine today, but the wind was again nasty at 16 to 20 MPH steady with gusts to 32 MPH.

Today was a great day to stay low on the drops and hammer away in the medium gears. Only a little better than 800' of climbing on this 26-mile course, so fairly flat with no killer climbs.

Cloudbursts and downpours last night and this morning. It dried up and I got a little ride in before the afternoon 1" of rain in 5 minutes gully washer!

It was 85 degrees and really humid this afternoon, but at least the sun was out. The wind was 9 to 14 MPH and while we had gusts up to 47 MPH last night, it really calmed down through the day.

Only 17 miles with 600' of easy climbing. All taken at a slow tempo. My legs were feeling ultra dead for some reason.

More rain in the forecast for tomorrow.

Just got off the bike. Trying to cool down and watching the TT. Damn hot today.
