Coyotes moving into San Francisco AP 10/17/04
SAN FRANCISCO Several coyotes have been spotted in San Francisco in recent weeks, most likely coming across the Golden Gate Bridge.
At least two of the 30-pound animals are living in the Presidio, while another is thought to live in the Bernal Heights neighborhood.
Residents around the Presidio have received letters about living in harmony with coyotes and warning them about leaving trash outside. They're also being cautioned to keep small animals indoors.
Park officials first thought the animals were coming from the south, but tests show they probably came down from the Marin Headlands to find a better place to hunt.
Coyotes tend to avoid people, but authorities still caution anyone who spots a coyote to keep from making eye contact, since it can spook the animal.
