  1. <sigh>

After going down from 121 to 120 to 119.5 and then not checking my
weight for a week last week it had dropped to 118.0. Great, I thought.

So a week later I checked my weight again and this morning it was 120 again!

I was following low-carb religiously this past week...

    Very depressing.

Well, just another bit of evidence that low-carb by itself does not let
you lose weight. You have to count the calories too.

That's what I mean when I say that as far as weight loss goes *all*
low-carb does is help you control your appetite somewhat. Period. Other
claims beyond that are deceptive, I truly believe.

Now I just have to find the will-power to add calorie-counting to my
    diet again.

  3. Or perhaps evidence that weight loss is not a straight line process, you
could easily be retaining more water today than at your low.

If you've been eating salty things lately - cured meats, cheeses,
salted nuts - it's not beyond the realm of possibility.

We women manage it on a regular basis, and it passes. I don't see why
you men shouldn't have to deal sometimes too.

My hubby can gain ten pounds overnight from eating Chinese food, then

    Geez. What FOB said.

I gain and lose as much as five pounds over a few days, but that's my body.
None of us are perfect machines that respond to a particular way of doing
things, and in fact, I do believe that most of our bodies are designed to
    fight against weight loss.

Following a program takes almost religious adherence, and if you don't want
to eat according to anyone's plan, don't do it and don't apologize for it.
Find out what works for you.

Let us know, too, what works best for you. We're all as blind as anyone
else when it comes to controlling weight.

That's just terrible! I'll bet you are so miserable being that weight, just
so depressing! Low carb really let you down. What does your doctor say you
should weigh? According to Metropolitan Life's charts you must be way under
5" tall. Being a little person myself, I know how some rules don't apply to
us. We must eat tiny potions of what others can eat and exercise a lot. Less
is more and more is less.

Doug thinks controlling calories would have made a difference. This
may be true if one were eating with abandon. However, there are lots
of people following a low calorie diet that have the exact same
experience, where weight loss stall or goes back up a couple pounds
    over a few weeks.

As for there being nothing to LC except the loss that comes as a direct
result of calorie reduction, weren't there a couple of recent studies
that showed those on LC lost the same amount or more while eating more
calories than those on low cal?

Why do people speak of low carb and low cal as though they are exclusive?
Most of the time they are not. Low carb is simply a means of eating less by
limiting carbs to remove BG-swing induced appetite. It is not magic per se
and one may still need an extra way of controlling the amount of
consumption, such as counting calories, in order to lose weight and
espeically to make sure the scale moves downward in a steady fashion, which
seems to be what doug wants to happen.

I remember one such study but it was funded by Aktins.

There are many benefits to LC, but I think doug was speaking in terms of
    weight loss only.

  13. I am easily 1 to 2 kg heavier after I've eaten my dinner because I drink tons of
water / milk (not exactly low carb, I know I know) while I eat my meal.

Another factor might be the room temprature. Now that it's winter, sometimes
the temprerature in my flat goes down to 10-13 degree celcius and my low tech
bathroom scale goes +/-1 kg depending on whether my heater is off/on.

You make no mention of your height. Nor do you say what you were doing
    last week.

I am not a strict low carber. I use a lot of the principles involved
with it, but do eat things like brown rice and oatmeal and I drink milk.

I also hit the gym 6~7 times a week with full body weight routines at
least 3x a week. In the first four weeks I was back at the gym I watched
my scale weight drop 5lbs/2.2kgs and then climb 15lbs/6.8kgs.

Depressing, yes. But I also knew that a lot of that was lean body mass
and *water in the muscle*. (see creatine usage)

In having my bf% done I have cut about 5% off my total bf% in the 8
weeks that I have been back at watching what I eat and working out. I
have gained a net 5lbs/2.2kgs of scale weight at the same time.

All things are relative. I know that the waistband of my pants is
slightly looser and that when I sit (with poor posture) at my desk there
is less of me between my pecs and abs, so I have to choose to ignore the
little voice in my head that says "I should just bag it and eat a carton
of ice cream when the scale does what it has been doing because nothing
    is working anyway."

This is why my goals are based on bf% and scale weights, not scale
weights alone. I can change the scale weight drastically based on how
much water I drink/don't drink that day.

Zoul, in the real world outside of Usenet, Low-carb has been marketed as
magic. People like Doug, even though they come here, haven't clued up about
    the lie.

The lie is based on the illogical but very appealing premise that you can
eat anything you want except <insert "bad" carb>. Why do you think Atkins
sold so well? Because it worked for the long term? Hell, no. It sold to
people who would rather have [censored] instead of truth and weight loss on their
    terms instead of thermogenic physics.

Weight loss/gain is amd always will be about consumption and consumption is
and always will be controlled by those who have learned to consume less.
    Period.
