  1. Are there any real treatments for fibromyalgia or is it
still a hit and miss, trial and error thing.

From what I have gathered the disease is still largely
    a mystery.

    Your comments greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

You can easily find the most recent studies and articles on
any disease, by going to PUBMED:

    ncbi.nlm.nih.govPubMed

There is no "cure" per se, but a variety treatments have
shown to be effective in decreasing symptoms, ranging from
medications to diet and lifestyle (healthy), exercise (esp.
flexibility and relaxation techniques), physical therapy,
and psychotherapy, usually in combination. Specific
    treatment is individualized.

Not entirely a "mystery", but clearly multifactorial.
Treating only a single component of the syndrome (e.g, pain)
    is doomed to failure.

PUBMED isn't intended for the layperson. It's difficult
enough for medical professionals, who have been educated in
epidemiology and biostatistics, to critically read and
digest the medical literature. It's clearly a *bad idea* to
have laypeople using PUBMED and similar resources as their
primary source of information. Web sites such as www-www-
    .familypractice.com/centers/center_pat/center_pat.html and
healthfinder.govhealthfinder.gov are a much better starting
    point for the average layperson.

Fibromyalgia is a euphemism for what used to be called
    hypochondria, drug-seeking, or attention-seeking behavior.
It's hard to treat because it's hard to diagnose. It's hard
to diagnose because it's not really a disease.

  6. Are you serious? All of the research I've done never
suggested any link with hypochondria. I'm very interested to
    know more about this aspect.

    Thanks.

That's what several physicians have told me. While there
is a very vague syndrome that is sometimes referred to as
fibromyalgia, it's also a catch-all diagnosis used with
all those depressed housewives out there who just want
    meds and sympathy.

The real thing--if it exists--is so ill-defined that it
scarcely merits a name of its own. It's like saying someone
    has the vapors.

There are many terms for this pseudo-disease, as it has been
around since time immemorial. It always occurs mostly in middle-
aged housewives, and the only treatments (which are never
curative and hardly ever even effective) are drugs and
attention, usually in that order. Psychoactive drugs are
    preferred, especially narcotics, antidepressants,
    anxiolytics, etc.

  11. I think you are very much mistaken. If you search the web
for fibromyalgia you will find lots of information about it
    as well as treatment protocols.

Your comments are similar to what people used to say about
depression - it's not a medical condition that needs
    treatment -JUST CHEER UP?

If that's what "several physicians" told you, I would not
    consult them again.
