Are you actually suggesting that you think people with fibromyalgia are faking having pain, or was this just a rhetorical point?
I'm saying that in cases such as fibromyalgia, where the only symptoms are subjective complaints made by the patient, it's impossible to know whether there is any real pain or not. And a lot of people _will_ fake it, especially in exchange for attention and/or prescription narcotics or other drugs.
How is that different from any other pain? For instance, how do you know that someone who says they have a headache actually has one? Again, someone certainly could fake having pain to get drugs, but do you actually believe that that is what is going on in people with fibromyalgia -- that they are pretending to have pain in order to get medication?

In a great many cases, yes. Fibromyalgia is a disease of choice for this type of malingering because no doctor can prove that you don't have it.

Ah. I had thought you were attempting to make some reasonable points about the non-specificity of fibromyalgia as a diagnosis, but if you really think that many people diagnosed with fibromyalgia are malingering and drug seeking, I think you are way off base.
I have stopped replying or reading any of his posts. Here and in other ng's he just likes to play the devil's advocate, but it's more like devil's a****le.

You have it backwards. Not all people with FM are malingering, but many malingering people claim to have FM. So you see many people with "fibromyalgia" who in fact are just looking for attention and/or prescription meds.
