  1. I just got back from the dietitian who wants me to eat 60-75 carbs per meal. That's nearly the
amount I have found causes slight spikes in my BG(120-140). Is the "Exchange" diet really the state
of the art in diabeties control? Should I just nod my head a lot and then keep doing what is working
for me? I've been keeping my BG <100 and my A1C <5 by sticking to 20-30 grams per meal.

  2. can't argue with success. I'd be unlikely to change what works, regardless of where the contrary
info came from. But that's just me, Sam.

We know food affects BG and carbs will raise it. The amount the dietician gave you will raise you BG
too high for your goals. What you are doing is giving you excellent results. Taking this to a
logical conclusion, I stick with what you are doing. Did she even ask what you were doing or what
    your A1c is? c

If it works for you then go with it. Remember though, BG isn't the ONLY thing you should concern
yourself with. If you other numbers are also OK then go with it. How's you lipids and blood
    pressure ??

My dietician doesn't mention carbs per se but does suggest certain type meals because they are lower
in fat. She wants me to watch my fat intake because my lipids were high. My last checkup saw my
lipids go down but my A1c was up...there's a trade off.

Wait a minute - let me see if I got this right:

You are eating 20-30g per meal Your blood sugars are under control Basically, everything
    is hunkydory

And your dietician want you to TRIPLE your carb intake?

IMHO You need e new dietician - that one is a complete IDIOT.....

  8. My lipids never got better without meds. And as I said, what works for me might not work for anyone
else. My sister and I were talking today about the info we recieved when she was first diagnosed.
Precious little it was. No one explained about eye disease, per se, just that it could happen, or
kidney disease. No one gaveus diet info, except a sheet from the ADA. This was back in 1988. When I
was idagnosed in 1998, I had to get info on my own, mainly because, the type given to me, from the
dietician, IMO was not enough. "Just do this" and not the why's of it. But if someonetold me to eat
that much carb, I'd be suspicious, unless I was on enough meds. Rainbow

the words and plied to it. Which In my opinion makes you a finger pointer, for one thing and ... oh
well, who cares ..... Now aside from my obvious stupidity, writing style and lack of netiquette, is
there some other reason you have a complaint about me .... you don;t know me at all well enough to
have one actually. So read it or don;t ... who cares ! I was eating my lunch and had time to talk,

Interesting. When I started restricting the carbs I ate, my lipids improved. Although my diet has a
high proportion of fat. unfortunately the lipids never got good enough, so now I'm on meds.

How much did your lipids improve by restricting fat and adding carbs?

Not ALL of the facts were initially stated. Perhaps this person has high BP or high lipids...BG
    isn't the ONLY consideration.

  14. no i didn't count the words; MSWord did. took all of 3 seconds to copy your massive paragraph into
Word and do a word count.

YOu must think I'm stupid. Of COURSE I know no one cares what I think! Why on earth do you think I'd
think otherwise?? Just because I type out a few hasty words now and then doesn't mean that I think
anyone cares! ONLY I care what I write. I don't think the world revolves around me or that anyone is
waiting around for my next post. But that won't keep me from posting!

I don't complain about every typo...please don't compare me to her

It WOULD be nice if you could organize your thoughts into some decent sized paragraphs, though...

WebTV users are an odd lot; on other forums they catch hell. I kinda see why, now... 🙂

Good grief! Don't get your knickers in a bunch! I had originally mentioned the lack of paragraphs
to let you know it's hard to read. I wasn't being rude at the time. I was truly offering a
suggestion. Kinda like Alan when he attempts to persuade me to be "nice". I don't bust his chops
when he gives a few pointers. I think it's cute. You, on the other hand, got all bent out of shape!
    What's up with that??

Try not to get so offended when someone tries to offer a suggestion. You could have mentioned a good
reason why you chose to put everything in one run on paragraph without getting all snippy about my
    suggestion.

    Cheers.

I can't remember off hand...they were near normal for a non-diabetic but my A1c jumped from 5.7 to
6.1 (lab normal <6.6). My BP is good, right around the 120/80 mark so I'm not too concerned about my
lipids. I'm currently trying better quality fats, less red meat, more chicken and fish reducing my
carbs again. I try to get around 150-200 g of carbs a day which is where I was after my DX. I was up
to about 200 to 300 a day when my A1c jumped to
    6.1

    I tend not to listen to people who don't listen to me as well. so;

If it were me, and that about is where I was. I would keep doing what I was doing until my lipids
were stable at some level, then attack the lipids.

It's possible that your lipids will never get really good, and you will need to take
    something for that.

My reading indicates that restricting fat will not affect cholesterol much but eating more carbs
will make triglycerides higher. It seems you can affect the mix of LDL and HDL some by diet and
exercise. BTW my doctor concurs in the above generalizations, and put me on statins when my lipids
    stopped improving.

My approach is that both diabetes and heart disease are long term problems and its worth taking a
few months to figure out what works, as long as you are working on it.

Unless there is some reason she gave you that you didn't give us, my logic would be "if it aint
broke, don't fix it". From my viewpoint those numbers are great. If there aren't other problems I'd
at least find a different dietician next time.
