Guy keeps posting things which say cyclists are on average better off and better educated than the bulk of the population - of course I'm more than happy to believe this, but can anyone point me to some research to back it up? I'm working on a business-planny sort of thing to try to sell an event I want to run next year to sponsors, and I want to persuade them that it will give them access to a desirable market.

You just have to show that they all use Apple Macintoshes, and every sponsor in search of a desirable market will immediately wet themselves.

Simon has been known to compile posting statistics for this newsgroup: those could be broken down into "windoze", "real OSs" and "other or unknown". *If* this group has a significantly higher proportion of Linux/Unix/MacOS users than other uk.rec newsgroups, it suggests a higher proportion of people who think/care - and indeed know - about what they use.
Sponsors don't have to be told what a small, self-selecting sample usenauts are. At least not if it's just one datapoint among several:-)

Alas some of us *have* to use Macrocr*p Windoze for the business software, as the software houses providing the mortgage sourcing software have repeatedly said that if we use any other system they will refuse to support the software if there are any problems and there's a sniff of any other OS...

Buying software that doesnt do what YOU want and on the platform YOU want.. sort of suz. We got cought with Quicken this year. Their support is so far beyond [censored] that every monday I send the support people a rude email.

Yebbut a better quality bike won't reduce your chances of getting cleared up. The way you use it will reduce the risk. So the bike becomes the hardware and the rider the operating system (didn't want to use the term "software", it's too apt). -- Pete http:[email hidden]/P

The software does what we need, but not on any other OS to Macrocr*p - and it's amuch more limited market than say that which uses Quicken.
Widows is alright. It does a decent job considering it has to appeal to a lot of people and also a lot of differing abilities. Although Windows XP looks like a kids toy, which I find an insult to my intelligence.
I would say that a cycling forum has a higher class of people than a car forum judging by my own experiences.
Most car forums are full of ignorant morons who think they know a thing or two about driving. Driving is a sport and your average motorist and car enthusiast knows nothing and has no ability (I compete in this sport btw). Whereas this website is for people who either compete in a sport, which is cycling, and hence know what they are on about or they use their bikes as transport or for recreation and have no dillusions that they are supremely skilled and highly competant. I think this is why I find people in this forum much less annoying than I do in car forums.

But he's right, it _ALSO_ looks like a fisher-price toy, and I also find it strangely insulting.
'Strangely' because the things it does makes it so patenmtly obvious the manufacturer thinks I'm an imbecile who can't be trusted, rationally, I'd have thought there wasn't any more offence to be casued by the _look_ of it.

ITYM Linux/Unix is a mixed bag of bits from which you can construct a quality bike if you know how, have the time and are prepared to do the odd bit of welding and machining to make it all fit together ;-)
