  1. You just have to love the nice Americans - what other intelligence
agency would put their whole WW place name database online for free..

Places, co-ordinates, everything you need to build a map except the
outline and roads. Free. Download by country (but be aware that the UK
is 4 separate countries, you need Jersey, IoM, and Guernsey as well as
    the UK.).

Hmm, maybe you need the US Geographical Presidential Information Agency
instead? I'm sure they use smaller words. 8>.

It's really not that hard, honest. I mean the files (once you unzip
them) are in plain text and everything - don't even need the magic
decoder ring that comes in your cornflakes.

Well... The CIA World Data Book says that the UK is the United Kingdom

England, Scotland and Wales, and that Jersy, IofM, and Guernsey are
dependent regions, along with some islands in the Caribbean, and others

Just you try telling that to a Scotsman! A Welshman would not be happy
either but strictly speaking Wales is a Principality.

    But they were asked!!
And they chose to stay put.
And they still largely vote for people who want them to stay put.
I've never been able to understand why. I'd love Lancaster to leave the
    UK.

Wouldn't make you a very good map! My village isn't listed and it puts my
Mother's village well under water in the middle of the Menai Straits! (Yes
and I DID reset my Vista to WGS84 befor entering the coordinates),
