Places, co-ordinates, everything you need to build a map except the
outline and roads. Free. Download by country (but be aware that the UK
is 4 separate countries, you need Jersey, IoM, and Guernsey as well as
    the UK.).

Wouldn't make you a very good map! My village isn't listed and it puts my
Mother's village well under water in the middle of the Menai Straits! (Yes
and I DID reset my Vista to WGS84 befor entering the coordinates),

Just you try telling that to a Scotsman! A Welshman would not be happy
either but strictly speaking Wales is a Principality.

That's the trouble with all too many words. You could try nation instead
but that too has a range of meanings that the awkward squad will
immediately latch onto. State perhaps is the best choice as most of its
other meanings do not have geographical associations but even there we
need to say sovereign state to distinguish from the United States whose
states are very definitely not sovereign.

Wouldn't make you a very good map! My village isn't listed and it puts my
Mother's village well under water in the middle of the Menai Straits! (Yes
and I DID reset my Vista to WGS84 befor entering the coordinates),

it does have a few problems yes .. hope the USA never needs to invade
the UK, they'll be seriously lost in a few places. Someone much have
browbeaten them into removing the population numbers and city sizes as
well (maybe the heavy hand of the OS?).

btw, if you tell me you mother's village, I'll fix it. My village wasn't
    listed either!

Well... The CIA World Data Book says that the UK is the United Kingdom

Does it say anything about their having weapons of mass destruction?
