  1. I have had some medical problems come up. And its causing me to question the
Atkins diet now. I will try to make it short and to the point. I hope to get
some input from those in the medical field.

I have been experiencing joint inflammation. Mainly the elbows. Gout has been
mentioned. Also, eating meats, mainly red meats and seafood, and a few others..
can cause Gout symptoms to appear? Or make it worse. By build up of uric acid
    on the joints?

This may not be really a Atkins related diet thing. But maybe it is. I was in
the ER/Hospital yeserday. (It is emabarrassing to talk about, no nasty comments
please) I experienced bleeding during bowel movements. My reg family doctor
told me to go to the ER immediately. I was also feeling faint, dizzy. All last
week I have not been well. Tired, fatigued, weakness, pain with Fibro worse,
the joint pain. Just not my normal self. Which my mornal self is not well
anyways. I sense something is wrong for sure.

I was diagnosed, after some not so great testing. Rectal scoping. I have a
internal hemmoroid (sp). Most likely caused by constipation, and or
    dehydration.

I have normal bowel movements, no constipation. With not feeling well anyway, I
have not been drinking enough though, I admit that. I did not have pain or
anything with the bleeding bowel movements. I was told, internal hemmroids (sp)
are not painful during bowel movents.

I was sent home with a stool softener. A referral out to have more testing,
specifically the colon. More scoping. I also have pain, not extreme though.. In
the stomach area. High up. The ER docs were concerned with this. Blood tests
were done. Because of the tiredness, weakness feeling. The blood work came back
    fine.

I have a list of symptoms, if they occur. To go back to the ER immediately.
Symptoms for more interanal bleeding, or bowel obstruction. For now, just
resting. I am so tired. I don't feel well. Support would be good too right now.

I have no appetite. I have lost alot of weight too the last couple weeks. The
weight loss I feel, not from dieting.

I also started a new med. Just took it one day. Vioxx. Maybe it ulcered my
    stomach.

  2. Gosh, Sunshyne. I'm really sorry to hear about all that you're going
through. I don't have any advice for you, but I am keeping you in my
    prayers.

Definitely get your bowel bleeding checked out thoroughly, though. DH
started with that a few years ago, and I MADE him go to the doctor. Turned
out to be IBS/colitis. But I also had a friend with the same symptoms who
died from colo-rectal cancer. You never can tell.

  3. I am no doctor but something similar came up in another LC board I am on
with gout in particular. His doc told him he is not drinking enough water to
support this way of eating. Even Dr. A. says it is VERY important to drink
at least 64 oz of water per day. He upped his water to 3 liters (well over
64 oz) and the gout has not come back since. He also only eats red meat 1-2X
per week and chooses white meats over the red. Water is also going to help
your bowel movements. I had a problem with constipation before I even
started Atkins, yet I hardly drank any water. Now I drink 100 oz per day and
have no problems at all while on Atkins. I also choose high fiber veggies
such as broccoli, cauliflower and spinach for my dinner.
I hope this helps a little.
Please get better soon and take care of yourself. Drink more water!😉

Did anyone call in an infectious disease specialist? Painful joints along with
your other symptoms are frequent with the various tick borne diseases, for
    example.

It's a very unreasonable stretch to think that a sudden, acute illness with
multiple symptoms was brought on by a diet you've been on for a lengthy period.

Placid. There are also others that have a diagnoisis of Fibromyalgia also in
here. I would like the others with the same illness as me, to step up to the
plate on this one. We are not hyperchondiacs. I am sure there are a few of them
out there though, that fit the description you gave.

Of course we may seem like we are. That is understandable. We do have weird
symptoms, we do have physical pain. We do look normal to others. I do
understand also, there are doctors out there that do not believe in
Fibromyalgia also. Fibromyalgia also runs hand in hand at times. With other
disorders and diseases. Lupus, MS, Arthritis. Many auto-immune disease's and
    disorders.

I have studied FM. At times FM is diagnosed, and at a later time, a different
diagnosis is obtained, when new symptoms appear.

I take it as a insult. That you have implyed that the symptoms I listed in the
OP, are also due to your perception of me being a hyperchondriac.

Also, I have other chronic pain conditions along with Fibromyalgia. Are those
in my head too, with your perceptions?

I am on a low carb dieting plan. A way of eating. I have alot of pain, and
illness problems. I come here for support on dieting. I also come here for ways
to improve my pain and illness with improvements on dieting. Got a problem with
    that?

That would be a totally inappropriate diagnosis before all physical causes have
been investigated. It's extremely rare, if, in fact, it exists at all.

  12. Stop the VIOXX. It gave my mom stomach bleeding and a study published this
past week showed that it triples the likelihood of having a heart attack.

You have to love the way that they warn you of all the dire things the diet
will do--which it doesn't, and then prescribe you drugs that are most
    definitely harmful.

Did anyone call in an infectious disease specialist? Painful joints along
    with
your other symptoms are frequent with the various tick borne diseases, for
    example.

It's a very unreasonable stretch to think that a sudden, acute illness with
multiple symptoms was brought on by a diet you've been on for a lengthy
    period.

I go to a low cost health clinic. I have no health insurance. I go to the
doctor again on Monday. Hopefully we will be able to get referrals out, to
    affordable specialists.

I do have a appt. coming for a Rheumatologist.

I am trying to look at all angles. Yes, I have been on the diet for 7-8 months.
I did see big improvement on my health. IBS did clear up. I did feel better. I
was able to exercise. The last few weeks. The last part of this summer. I have
been really sick. I havn't been able to do much at all.

Eating certain meats, can cause Gout symptoms in some people. Dehydration also.

Thanks for the input, greatly appreciated. I will bring the suggestions up with
    my doctor next week.
    🙂

I am no doctor but something similar came up in another LC board I am on
with gout in particular. His doc told him he is not drinking enough water to
support this way of eating. Even Dr. A. says it is VERY important to drink

    Quoted message said:

at least 64 oz of water per day. He upped his water to 3 liters

What other LC board are you on? I am interested. It is very hard to post and
ask questions. It is hard to find support and info for both illness, pain,
    dieting.

Thats why I stopped posting for awhile.

  15. Yes, Sunshyne,

My doctor friends have told me that the medical profession uses the term
fibromyalgia as a code word to signify patients who are suffering from
    hypocondria.

Whenever someone tells them that they have been diagnoised with
    fibromyalgia, the medical professional's response is ... hmmm ... yes ... I
    understand.

ah, ... has it ever been suggested before that perhaps you suffer from

The physical symptoms are always real, but might be "normal" physical
    signs
which are misinterpreted as more dangerous than they really are.

Placid. There are also others that have a diagnoisis of Fibromyalgia also
    in
here. I would like the others with the same illness as me, to step up to
    the
plate on this one. We are not hyperchondiacs. I am sure there are a few of
    them
out there though, that fit the description you gave.

Of course we may seem like we are. That is understandable. We do have
    weird
symptoms, we do have physical pain. We do look normal to others. I do
understand also, there are doctors out there that do not believe in
Fibromyalgia also. Fibromyalgia also runs hand in hand at times. With
    other
disorders and diseases. Lupus, MS, Arthritis. Many auto-immune disease's
    and
    disorders.

I have studied FM. At times FM is diagnosed, and at a later time, a
    different
diagnosis is obtained, when new symptoms appear.

I take it as a insult. That you have implyed that the symptoms I listed in
    the
OP, are also due to your perception of me being a hyperchondriac.

Also, I have other chronic pain conditions along with Fibromyalgia. Are
    those
in my head too, with your perceptions?

I am on a low carb dieting plan. A way of eating. I have alot of pain, and
illness problems. I come here for support on dieting. I also come here for
    ways
to improve my pain and illness with improvements on dieting. Got a problem
    with
    that?

Then you should find some smarter, more knowledgable doctor friends. FMS

Only a lazy, dismissive as@hole doc uses it interchangably with hyPOCHONDRIA.

When you bring this up with your doctor, don't mention Atkins...just tell
him/her you've removed/reduced starchy foods, sugar & flour products, and
    junk good.

Well, at least now you know how you are being preceived when you present a
wide array of ailments along with the "code word" fibromyalgia.

    Take care,

good luck on your low carb way of life

With not feeling well anyway, I have not been drinking enough though, I admit
that. I have had some medical problems come up. And its causing me to
    question the Atkins diet now.

    That's a major no-no with low-carbing. You MUST drink water/liquids and you
MUST eat fibrous veggies like broccoli, cabbage, green beans, etc.
Both will prevent constipation, and hydration will help prevent gout.
However, I also have FM and eat low-carb, and will tell you that I had those
kinds of pains you describe well before I ever started a diet plan. So I doubt
seriously that your eating is causing the pain unless the pain is from
constipation. The Vioxx certainly is suspect as well.
Unless your doctor is low-carb friendly, he'll just tell you that you need to
eat sugar and flour anyway. (G) So many people just don't understand what
low-carbing is all about, and it's a shame.
Gout manifests with extreme pain, swelling, and redness, usually in only one
joint, and usually in the extremities. (The pain is excruciating...not just
"bad". I've had it in my big toe, pre-low-carbing. Trust me - it's horrible!)
The symptoms should spontaneously disappear in about two weeks. When/if it
comes back, it can return in the same places or different ones. Mine never did
    reoccur.
Overindulgence of alcohol and red meats IS a cause of gout, but mainly in the
presence of dehydration. Trauma to the joints is another cause. You already
have fibro, so that may be the cause. Dehydration is a major cause of gout. You
GOTTA keep hydrated, girl! Some medications can cause gout too- blood pressure
    meds, diruetics, even aspirin.
Keep up the good fight; I know how discouraging it can be sometimes. And
    please, go drink something! LOL!
