  1. i like to try and ride all the hills. If i fall halfway up a hill and
it was a technique error and not just that it got too imposibly steep
for me, i will ride back down and try again.

  2. What a great thread.
I love to try uphill muni rides with and without success. I Like the
karma theory too. Unicycling still gives you meaningful time downhills
as opposed to say cross country skiing. To me that seems like 90% going
up and 10% down (I like to exagerate).
This local kid who is about 15 (Laurence from Beechworth) has skinny
legs, his original juggleart 24" including the skinny tyre, rides up
every hill we tackle. He's good and doesn't make a big deal of
    it...just rides.
Some of the hills are pretty steep and technical, I wish I could keep
up so it gives me an aim.

  3. I love tackling an uphill section. If the hill is too steep I then
revert to pecking. I love it! It is so cool to just peck up a section
that even the mountain bikers have given up on and to totally succede!

I also ride as far up as I can and then transfer to pecking. I feel
that the transfer from riding to pecking and then back to riding is a
    great skills builder.

  5. Am I missing the point of this thread? Why do most of the replyers here
    find uphills "fun"?

I do my best to tackle uphills offroad, but many serious ones often
leave my legs burning up, eventually turning to jelly and running out
of power, so when I (have to) dismount I can only just stand up. I'm
blushing and hot faced, sweating buckets, breathing heavily and get as
thirsty as a brand new sponge.

    I don't call that fun.

It's fun because it feels good when you stop, like banging your head

That describes me on the uphills exactly. But I still do call it fun.
And it reminds me to get my fat ass in shape, too. And it makes me want
to be able to do it better, without as much sweating and all, in the
near future. Overall, it's a great motivator.

I have a hard time having anything but fun when I'm on the muni, no
    matter how exhausted I get.

Mind you, if you asked me at the exact moment when I'm flushed,
sweating, and can't breathe, I usually would say something like "Whose
idea was riding up this hill, anyway?" It's retrospect that allows me
to apply the label "fun," I guess.

Some of us are stubborn and insist on doing the climbs. 🙂

One of my favorite local trails is on Tiger Mountain. It starts with a
3.5 mile climb on a dirt road that gains 1100 feet or so. When I first
started muni I could not make it up that climb. I had to take frequent
rest breaks. I was pushing my aerobic capacity. In short, I was
    suffering on the climb.

Now I can do that climb easily. It is no longer a climb that focuses
just on surviving the climb. Now it's just a part of the ride and I
need to get to the top where the trails start. The climb is so a part
of the ride that I can't imagine doing the ride without the climb
(unless I got really masochistic and decided to ride the singletrack
uphill :eek🙂. Now I get to the top, rest a few minutes while eating
and drinking something. The climb does not turn my legs to jelly. I'm
feeling fine and satisfied that I've done the climb. Then it's off to
    some bumpy downhill singletrack.

Part of the benefit is fitness and improved technique. Not at all a
bad tradeoff for a bit of climbing.

There are some climbs though where the climb up is so steep and long
that the climb does kill me and I end up walking some of the climb.
Generally, if the climb is steep enough that experienced mountain
bikers are forced to use the low end of their granny gears then it's
going to be too steep for me to sustain on the muni. Those climbs
aren't fun. If a fit cyclist can middle ring it then the climb is
going to be fine for me on a muni (but I'm going to be slower than the
    bike).

  11. When I started this thread I had, well, basically no uni
muscles/technique at all. I live in an area with alot of hills and my
neighborhood specifically has alot of hills. I was pretty frustrated
since there weren't many places I could go (too many 'hills'😉, it was
very humbling. I've kept hitting the hills as much as I can, now all I
see in my neighborhood is a bunch of challenges, it's pretty cool.

john_childs, I was checked out your website and saw that you mentioned
tiger mountain, as a mtn b*ker I used to ride up there alot and was
just wondering if you rode up that hill. Well I got my answer! Pretty
impressive, I have a long long way to go. What size muni do you ride
    up that? 24 or bigger?

Anyway cool posts here, thanks for all info...

I ride a 24x3 muni with a Gazzaloddi tire. The first time that I tried
to climb that hill I was riding a Pashely 26" muni with probably a 2.1"
XC tire. It kicked my butt back then.

There is still more challenge though on that hill. There is an
optional climb that goes to the radio towers and adds an additional 500
vertical feet. It also gets a bit steeper. I haven't made it all the
way up to the radio tower yet without stopping. One of these days I'll
make it. The local MTB club does 'training rides up to the radio
    tower' (http://www.bbtc.org/php/show_page.php?page_id=27). It takes me
about 40 minutes to climb to the Preston RR trailhead. It takes the
MTB riders an average of about 40 minutes to make it to the radio tower
and that's 500 feet more elevation and some steep bits. Bikes are
faster going uphill than a humble muni.

Potentially, yes, but as a few have discovered a uni (road or dirt) can
beat hoards of cyclists w/ less skilled tecknique and/or fitness.
