vanuni mainly ride on 2 mountains:

mt seymour is a 'shuttle' mountain. we park at the bottom and one car
    takes us to the top.

mt fromme has no car access. we walk to the top.

Vancouver mountains are steep, downhill skiing mountains. Riding up
isnt really an option. Trails that are ridable are more cross country
    than muni.

    Um, beg to disagree =).

  3. Does anyone have any video footage of hill climbing? With all of the
downhill video footage, I just assumed that everyone got a ride to the
top of the hill and then rode down.

  5. John: Would you mind sending a copy of that photo of the hill climb you
posted to me? I've been really working on improving my fitness through
climbing as much as I can around where I live and seeing that photo
with the accompanying facts of elevation and distance is pretty
inspiring. Fitness like that is truly remarkable. I'd just like to set
the photo to my desktop background for a while.

Look at this bunch of pansies -walking- up Snowdon!
    Pffh!

Hey, you can't tell if they're pansies or not, that section is too
steep to ride (at least for me, I can do about 5 metres from the
railway line bit before losing it).

If you could see them on the sections before that, with tons of
rideable bits, and see whether they tried to ride or not, then you'd
know whether they were pansies or not. It's only Snowdon after all,
it's not like it's a really hard ride (you should try Steve Colligan's
Peak District ride, now that was a real test of pansieness).

I know there are some things that you can't physically ride up, I'm not
saying that there aren't, but as Kris and John demonstrated about the
Vancouver mountains, not even trying just means you'll never find out
what is possible, and always be a lazy bugger. I've ridden on some ski
mountains over here in New Zealand, plus a few times up through the
local woods parallel to where the nationals downhill track goes,
etc.etc. and I've always ridden as much uphill as my legs will take.

  7. To me it just isn't "complete" muni without a good % of climbing. It's
almost like I'm "earning" my ride back down by climbing the UPs as much
as possible. I'll tell you, it's given me quads of steel! 😎

Cross country and muni aren't different things. Just because you're
riding 20 miles doesn't mean it's all flat, smooth and boring. To me
cross country just means that the ride is several miles long and you
either ride, or try to ride all of it - up and downhills.

    Yeah!

"I don't do cross country" generally translates to "I eat lots of pies,
so I ride the same trails, just slower, and I walk all the uphills"
    simple as.

  10. I always try to muni the ups and the downs. If I fall off on an uphill,
I'll try to jog up to the top as my penalty. Like Terry (MuniAddict)
said - the uphill gives you quads of steel.

Muni uphills are great for getting in shape for Whiteface
(www.whitefacerace.com) anyway. Once I get there, I'm like "Whoa - you
mean it's a *-paved -*uphill?!?! Sweet!"

  13. walking up helps me to get my heart rate right.
If I try to climb up with a muni I often fail (not enough technique and
not enough strong heart) so walking up is part of the overall
    management of the ride.
now following this thread I will train more to go uphill but I am
pretty sure I will not ride uphill most of the time during long muni
    sessions.
I love pies (and I am as slim as joeMarshall :p -or even slimmer-) but
I am also not young enough to withstand heart-breaking efforts -though
last time my heart rate was checked it was at 46 beats/minute I have
    been requested to play smoothly-

  16. I am FAT and I climb UP hills. If I'm off road, I ride everything that
is possible for me. I wil give it a few tries before I walk up. If I
am on a road whether it is a fire road or a San Francisco hill. I
never walk up. If I don't ride up a hill, I don't get the payoff of
riding at the top. There are some SF hills that have completely beat
me, I couldn't ride up them. I had to turn around and find another way
up. These are my own standards. I have never ridden with another rider

  17. Ride up the hills, its an intresting challange if nothing else 🙂

More seriously though Last night I did about 8.5km in th eforest,
including an evil bit of uphill technical single track, which had the
sweat streaming off me, a couple of weeks ago I did an 18.5km charity
ride on mostly flat cycle paths, without breaking a sweat, its all
those hill climbs that have given me that stamina, Ride up the hill
it'll improve many aspeects of your riding and MOST IMPORTANTLY

it gives you an excuse to have a lovely pie when you have finished.

Oh and the point of muni ? Surely its to go ride your unicycle where
people think it can't be done, walking uphills plays into the hands of
    none-riders

  19. I live on the only "mount" in Mount Holly, so there are a few small
hills here. When I started, I couldn't get up one side street on a
KH24 with 165 cranks. I can now fly up it on my N36 with 150 cranks,
and can almost conquer it with the N36 and 125 cranks.

Leg exercises really help. When I get a chance, I'll copy the ones my
PT gave me to do. They really do make a difference in strenghtening
    your legs.
