It's typical for us to think that money can show other nations that
we truly care. This is exactly the capitalist mindset. If money is
the most important thing, then surely giving it away will gain us
resounding support in the remainder of the world. Um .... wrong
    answer.

I hope that doesn't explain the 35 million dollar initial response
    from Bush.

Several ships were already in-route to the area to render aid long
before GWB stood up to pledge our monitary support in front of the
news cameras. Nobody ever considered that.. Nor how much that is
costing us in fuel, food and salaries for that aid to get there and be
given. Just look at the USNS Mercy, ( http://www.mercy.navy.mil/ )12
state of the art operatingrooms, a 1,000 bed hospital facility, et....
Can you even begin to guess at what it takes to operate a ship of that
size???? a 1000 bed floating hospital, and the complete staff to run
    it.

Right. And as I said in another post, the 35 mil was obviously just an
inital assessment outlay, just as the 350 mil is sure to grow (and doesn't
even include a lot of the expense plus all the private and corporate $).

If Bush had rushed before the cameras and made a speech, the very same
people who criticize him for "doing nothing" for 2-3 days would say he was
grand-standing for political gain. (It's OBVIOUS! DUH!)

Jonesing for a bike ride, Bill

You're pretty closed minded. I doubt the hotel workers in Thailand and

    do with 9-11

Let's not forget an aircraft carrier group that has been working the
area relentlessly either - logging LOTS of helicopter hours. There
are 6,000 sailors on the carrier alone.

You might want to check with the Taliban to see if he did anything
besides play golf though - I think they'd disagree with you.

As governor, Bush hosted a Taliban delegation to work out a deal for
that oil pipeline. As president, he did diddly-squat about terrorism
until September 2001. So says everyone involved.

And Osama's bin Forgotten. (But that won't stop Shrub from crowing about
finally running the creature to ground when/if it ever happens.)

You are such a dumbass. A terrorist attack in which a net 3,000 deaths
occured - how is that even remotely similar to an act of God in which 50
times that amount died?? I'm not marginalizing 9/11, but this is a
    completely different situation.

If Bush would articulate his initiatives with more clarity (practice!)...If

    How 'bout Richard Clarke?

"...the first point, I think the overall point is, there was no
plan on Al Qaeda that was passed from the Clinton administration to
    the Bush administration."

"the Clinton administration had a strategy in place, effectively
dating from 1998. And there were a number of issues on the table
since 1998. And they remained on the table when that
    administration went out of office."

"the Bush administration decided then, you know, in late January,
to do two things. One, vigorously pursue the existing policy,
including all of the lethal covert action findings, which we've
now made public to some extent....The second thing the
administration decided to do is to initiate a process to look at
those issues which had been on the table for a couple of years and
get them decided." - Richard Clarke

Just in case you were really interested... he brought up other points
like Bush increasing the budget to get Al Qaeda by five times (IIRC),
and about changing the policy from reacting to Al Qaeda to one of
    eliminating Al Qaeda.

Not so. Clinton actually tried to hunt Osama down, but the political
climate called for playing sort-of nice. 9/11 did change that.

And of course there's the millenium celebration attack that didn't
happen. The 9/11 commission will tell you about that, and what credit
    Clinton was due.

Shrub is a right winger. That's bad, but what's worse is he's an
    incompetent right winger.

Bush tossed out the Clinton strategy and let 8 months elapse while a new
strategy was being hashed out. Too bad Osama's plans were on a faster track.

Clarke made a point out of how Clinton "shook the trees" prior to the
millenium celebration, and how that probably contributed to an attack
being thwarted. What if Shrub had kept those trees shaking?

But, you're good. You've got your facts straight. I knew that might
happen if I made a global hand-waving statement like I did. So, good job. 🙂

But Mark, everyone knows that Clarke was just a lying stooge back then,
before /completely changing his spots/ once he left the administration. (Of
course, writing and selling a BOOK had nothing to do with it, either.)

Yes I am very impressed with Bush's change from doing business with the
Taliban to destroying them in a matter of a few weeks.

It might come as a shock to those who got that impression (about Bush
inviting the Taliban to Texas) from watching Michael Moore's
"documentary" that the trip was actually arranged by the Clinton
administration - a "detail" that got left out of the "documentary".
Funny how almost everyone who saw the "documentary" got the wrong
    impression, huh?

    I am equally
impressed with the speed and ease he was able to undo 4 years of

one that doesn't and just "stay the course" in the hopes that the mad
man in north Korea he slapped in the face isn't as mad as the one in the
    USA.

If you consider the Clinton "negotiations" (dang I'm using a lot of
quotation marks) a success then there's no discussing the issue. The
only success involved was the amount of fuel oil and money Kim Jong Il
    successfully got out of us.
