Ive topped 65mph a few times in the Blue Ridge mountains. Its fairly easy to do, especially in the area around Snake Mountain etc.

My personal best is 91 .1 kph (~57mph). No pedalling required, just tucked up on a nice steep road. Haven't done it since as its a drop into a valley and its a [censored] to have to ride out the other side again 🙂

This was posted in another forum, but I thought it might be relevant here...

By the way, my top speed is a tame 74 km/h

100mph on paved road? even I call BS. calibrate your speedometer buddy.
That road you were on, I'm pretty sure there is no grade over 25%.
Never been on it myself, but reliable sources say that Haleakala averages about 5% and doesn't deviate too much. No way you're breaking 45-50mph on the way down.

Hi Everyone,
Just signed up!
I was woundering what kind of top speeds people have seen on their steeds?
I have four bikes - WTP 4 Seasons BMX, Specialized StumpJumper Disc MTB, Specialized Allez Comp Road and a custom build Santa Cruz Blur MTB.
I have seen about 28mph on flat and 39mph downhill on the Specialized StumpJumper Disc and can get about 34mph on flat and 43mph downhill on the Specialized Allez Comp.
The downhills weren't that long where I did the runs - I reckon with more space they could be improved.I was keen to know what us 'normal' cyclists can achieve after reading about the redbull road rage challenge over in California where the guy who won achieved over 58mph at certain time stages!
cya.
I have a felt 45 top speed 27 28 its a 18 speed
I have a fischer supercaliper upper 20 27 speed
I have a cannondale m 200 le upper 20 24 speed
I have a specailized fsr stump jumper building 24 speed will find out when I get a E durailleur.
my old schwinn peliton upper 30s was passing cars bikes motorcycles
I miss that bike that cost 1,500.00 I built it until someone stole it brakes were 14k gold and gloss black royel diacomp brakes. -
Don't remember the exact speed, but around 90-ish kph, coming down the Iseran. Pure terror and fun. 🙂

I go about 20 or so on a felt 45 racing bike
its about all aura ace with fsa carbon crank
sound like fun. -
Hmmm,
52mph (based on my computer, who knows?) on a couple of different bikes. Maybe more one other time but I wasn't looking down at that point.
Lots of good hills around here. -

years a go I built my first bike and top speed was 30 to 35 mph was passing cars motercycles a lady said your going over 25 mph while I was passing them up
now all I can do is about 20 to 23
on my felt 45 -
60+ mph on downhill - speed after coasting down from unknown top speed, started to pedal 160+ rpm in 54x11, Fitchburg RR.
45-48 mph on flats - cross/tailwind, group rides like former SUNY Purchase sprints (slight downhill sprint), Gimbles (slight uphill 120 sprint), Summer St sprints (slight uphill to flat finish).
42 mph flats (unfriendly wind, same sprints as above)
55-60 mph for a mile on flat (Hurricane George tailwind, spun out in 54x11, south of Miami, deadflat next to water)
30+ mph (maintain for 10-15 seconds uphill - 8% or so grade, starting on a flat section of road)fyi I think that many Cat 3 (i.e. normal people) racers can maintain 37-38 mph for approx 400-800 meters when chasing down an attack on a flat road with little/no wind. The same 3's might be able to hold 30 mph for almost a mile. The Pro/1/2's can hold something like 30-35 mph for serveral minutes in local races, i.e. only a few guys pulling and everyone else hanging on for dear life.

*edit* error in my speed calc for Fitchburg, corrected now

I use a cateye os computer on my 3 bikes
easy to setup takes a little bit to learn also expencevie
I can do at least 30 or so for about 1 to 1/1/2 miles until I burn out
those racers use specail gears for climbing hills on my bike I have ti cass on 2 of my bikes ppl don't buy them because there expencive there from $130.00 to 170.00 for a cassette my moutain bike can climb any or almost any hill because of the design and gearing it would be a great hill climber not a great race bike .
my felt would make a great race bike built for speed because of the fsa carbon crank thats the trick keep it light you go fast
so hang on for life also your wallet too those racers do have tricked out bikes 2 of my bikes have ti spokes light and fast.
so if you need to get a fast bike light weight think of spending about 5 grand and up -
35-40mph on my 25 year old 10 speed healing on a big hill while coasting. Could tell by the fact I was keeping up with the cars (Here in NZ, all cars travel over the speed limit). Will try the same hill with pedalling next time.
32mph on my Raleigh/Morrison 12 Speed on a flat sprint. Didn't help that my safety vest kept flapping in the wind.

I've hit 43 on my Diamond Back MTB on a paved decline

I got a little scared half way as i took over a police car 🙁 cruising on about 60, hit the brakes lol

They do here since they are motor vehicles.
