ghostpedal said:O.K. I know some people won't believe, but when I was in the Navy I made it to Maui and myself and some buddies went up Mount Haleakala on road bikes and then went down a few hours later. The road is 38 miles long, and all of it a decent grade (I don't know the exact figure). I was riding a Cannondale R2000 at the time (I had a $400 car and a $3500 bike when single). My little blue Avocet computer was set to MPH, and on a certain straight section, it climbed to 99.9 MPH, but I was still accelerating. Looking back on it, it's one of the stupidest things I have done. If I had flatted I would have probably been killed. At the time it was great. We loved it so much that the next day we took mountain bikes up the same road, and on the way down I hit 63 MPH. I still remember the noise of all our knobby tires going that fast on tarmac. It was like a very loud yell. I would never do it again, but at least I have the very distinct memories. Ahh...youth.
100mph on paved road? even I call BS. calibrate your speedometer buddy.
That road you were on, I'm pretty sure there is no grade over 25%.
You would need at least a 40% sustained downhill(in other words - a cliff) to get anywhere near that. And the only paved road in the world near that steep is Baldwin st in New Zealand.
Isn't terminal velocity for a skydiver something like 120mph?
I am all about going downhill fast, and someday I will ride that mtn in Maui. Just to see.
