A pal and I were trying to remember and failing: Are there any
TdF winners who were not that good as time-trialers?

Marco Pantani comes to mind instantly.

They all suckeed at time trailing:

    1998 Pantani
    1959 Bahamontes
    1958 Gaul

They where not good at time trailing:

    1988 Delgardo
    1976 Van Impe
    1973 Ocana

... i don't know much about early riders.

A pal and I were trying to remember and failing: Are there any
TdF winners who were not that good as time-trialers? The history
section of letour.com doesn't specify which stages were ITT, so
I can't even figure it out on my own (although that sure beats
    getting work done this afternoon).

Any of you historians able to help us out here?

    Gaul, Bahamontes

Gaul won the Tour of 1958. His performances in the TTs of that year:
    Circuit de Chateaulin (46) km:
    1. Gaul 2. Anquetil 3. Planckaert 4. Brankart
    Mt Ventoux (22,5 km)
    1. Gaul 2. Bahamontes 3. Dotto 4. Brankart
    Besançon-Dijon (74 km)
    1. Gaul 2. Nencini 3. Adriaensens 4. Planckaert.
Pretty good, IMO. In 1956 he also won the first TT. Bahamontes wasn't so bad
either. He won TT climbs in 1959 (the year he won the Tour) and 1962, but in
1963 at 35 was still capable finishing third in a flat TT after great
    specialists as Anquetil and Bracke.
