The Thread about Nothing....

Well I thought he was Ganna go far. 56.792 kilometres. Nice.

The bummer about it is that I can no longer say that I was sometimes passed at speed in time trials by the guy that held the real hour record. I don't see me getting a pro contract and being passed by Ganna anytime soon. :p

Carrie Bickmore is leaving the Project and you'd think it was earth-shattering news. I'm only giving a **** if she starts an Onlyfans account.

Does anyone reckon time-trialing has become too technical? It seems to be the bloke with the best wind tunnel and science team who win, rather than guys like Merckx and Hinault, et al, pushing 800 Watts for 45 mins. :p

Speaking of TTs, GCN have been up to their usual shenanigans of ensuring that one of their sponsor's products -- in this case, a new Orbea -- appears to be slightly faster (and as fast with one of the guys), than one of the fastest bike ever, the Lotus. This sort of stuff ***** me, because newbies think they have to spend 15 grand to be competitive on their cafe rides (so I keep saying).

I think it’s about both and the same was true in Hinault’s day. When he rode for Renault and they had that cool TT bike with the integrated aero handlebars and teardrop tubing and Lycra skinsuits - before Moser did the hour record and disk wheels were a thing, aero was a big part of it. They had those super skinny Wolber 18 aero rims with matching tubs. Bladed DT spokes too.

I just think that back then people were more Luddite than they are now. A refusal to accept change was the norm and anything like accepting science in cycling was akin to accepting a new God and burning in hell for all eternity for accepting Ye Aero Gods.

I dig the science behind aero and going faster for the same watts. If you’re racing then you have to deal with it. Ultimately speed/efficiency wins, within reason. I could have the lowest cda out there but I ain’t gonna win a two up uphill sprint against Van der Poel. Against duffers in my league, that science will give me an advantage.

About a decade ago I pulled out my old steel TT/road race bike I used in the mid 90’s for some audax/brevet rides. 653, 76 degree seat and a slight drop on the top tube. 700c front and back. I wasn’t the fittest so I spent some time on my position and dialed in a comfy position for 12+ hours that was aero. 20mph took less than 180 watts. After 12 hours on the 600km ride I was the one doing the into the wind pulls and just tapping off the miles and enjoying the scenery even though at that point I was in a block headwind with 40C temps and feeling like I was riding toward a hairdryer.

To technical…
… Ganna just went sub 4 minutes for 4K to snag the world record back.

I can’t even fathom how to average 60kmh from a standing start over 4km.

The world has gone mad.

With the events of the last few weeks, this Obree video with Simon Smart from Evne wheels and Enduro was a great watch. What was faster, Obree's crouch, Superman or is a modern TT bike and fancy skinsuit faster.

Obree is a legend. Hats off to the lad.

At least you can buy the Orbea. I rode a Lotus 110 at a TT in Hull, UK but not in the event. I thought it was amazing when I looked at it and thought it was **** when I rode it. The guy that owned it was supposedly a fast lad and started a minute behind me in a 10 mile TT. I punctured about a mile out and rode on softening tyre to the finish that ended up flat and he beat me by 2 seconds. I was on my steel 82 degree seat angle round tube 531 tandem tubing TT bike. After the finish line he caught me on the mile ride back to the parking lot and I asked for a ride. He was curious about my bike so I stuck my training back wheel in.

Irony was he liked my bike, I was underwhelmed by his as it felt like it would pop both my femurs out of my pelvis and rode like it was made from concrete. He was a little smaller than me so I should have felt comfortable on his bike. Hats off to Boardman for absolutely creaming everyone in the 94 Tour prologue and making even second place Indurain look like a slacker on this bike. My appreciation for him went up so much after my ride.

I don't know how TT's work down under but in the UK the fast lads went off on 0's ( number 10, 20, 30) then then next ranking was 5's (5, 15, 25) then 1's, 2's 3's etc. I was off on a 1, so should have been caught by Mr Lotus. Ah, the joys of ranking people based upon their best times on super fast courses when you don't live near a fast course on a road where cars pass you at 120kmh.

Funny watching so many Brits getting bent out of shape about the partnership between British Cycling and Shell.

These same people probably ride carbon bikes: made from carbon fiber produced from chopping down trees and producing rayon and processing it and then using several products from the petrochemical industry. They’re already activity supporting chopping down plants and drilling for oil yet don’t want an oil logo on the national cycling teams shirt and the cash that comes with it. Some folks need some “edumucation.”

Same with steel bikes: a ****ton of digging, massive amounts of electricity to melt and process the steel and massive amounts of CO pollution and cap that off with some low tech brazing technology…

… and people wonder why I often need alcohol to talk to some folks.

yeah, crikey! I remember being 'wowed' when Dean Woods was riding around 4:40; and it's hard to imagine him smashing Bobridge by 10 seconds. Ganna's beastliness aside, it makes we wanna ride one of those bikes on one of those tracks to see how much difference it makes. Here's the progression of 4km world records

I’m sure Robert Dill-Bundi did a 4.31 at Moscow in 1980, and that Woods did a 4.27 in Vienna in 1987
