That's cool. Stay well within your limits. If you know what is right for you; then most of us in this group would only encourage you.
What should I pay 3 to 4 times as much for a bike that will be slower and less comfortable for the riding I do?
Besides, Serotte and Colnagi are just ordinary uprights that disappear in a crowd. I never have problems identifying which bike is mine from a distance at a crowded rest stop. In fact, it is so distinctive, complete strangers often address me by name.

That is funny coming from someone who does not quote anything, so no one knows what he is talking about.
Anyhow, you are wrong. John Kerry owning a Serotta was mentioned in the thread and referenced article, and that is what the title of thread I linked to is about. 😉

I do not understand you. Nor do I believe you are trying to dialogue. What does haven't to quote anything mean. The thread as I understood it was about Serotta making the press--not about John Kerry, his political affiliation or any of the hyperbole you directed me to.
To answer what is trying to be said, it means including the relevant portion of the text you are replying to. This is very basic Usenet protocol.

This is Usenet. Learn to deal with it.

Someone is obviously way too thin-skinned to participate in Usenet discussion.

Umm, just so you know, on my newsreader your post (above) appeared as a reply TO YOURSELF.
I mean how many people can really afford to spend 6 grand on a bike?
Well, how many people can afford to spend 6 grand or more on home theaters? Plasma and LCD tvs are selling like hotcakes, and lots of plasmas are more than 6 grand. I guess it's about priorities. Compared to a 75K BMW, a 6K bike isn't bad at all.

Sure, but there's no correlation, you know what I mean? Actually, I think there's a negative correlation in the group I ride with. It seems that people are constantly "upgrading" but most are riding less as time goes on. I think a common motivation is to get a better bike to stimulate more riding and better fitness. It's kind of like people who get a dog to lose weight.
MTB'ers seem to be even worse than roadies for being drawn to bright and shiny things. There's not much of the retro-fetishism that plagues the road warriors, so newer is always better.
I am a victim of retro-fetishism. Lugged steel gives me a boner... :-)

Well I wouldn't spend 6 g's on a T.V. either! Or 75 on a BMW. I am more practical I guess. I like riding my old 75 ish road, I test rode a new trek a couple of weeks ago, and didn't notice all that much difference.
Also, I think MTB'ing attracts more gearheads -- people who are attracted to the gear as much or more than the activity.
Yeah, it's funny. I do bike patrol at a local park. Frequently when I'm there picnicing with my family this guy rolls up, we call him "gear man", and always proceeds to talk about all the latest doodads he's installed on his & wife's bikes. Of course he's the kind of guy who rides full DH kit XC. It never seems to register on him that I show not the slightest interest in response, nor that all my stuff is pretty dated.
Recently a guy in my road riding group asked my opinion about new bikes since he was in the market. I replied I was the wrong guy to ask since I wasn't that into gear. He appeared shocked. The weird thing is that we've ridden together for years, think he would have noticed that just from the relatively modest components I have. The irony is be that gear heads get new [censored] to impress, but everyone's so self-centered they don't notice.
Funny how you claim not to need the visibility but are the first to claim it.
Huh? I just spend my money more wisely than those who buy $6,000+ bicycles do.
This may be a first, but I'm going to take John Kerry's side against Tom Sherman's ridicule of him. ;-)
If you've got piles of money (and there is no doubt JK does), spending $6000 on a bike (even if it's not really "worth it"😉 is still a very good investment. Heck, for those of us who actually spend a lot of time on our bikes, even if OUR bikes cost that much they'd STILL be a good investment. Where else do you buy something that saves you 20 to 40 cents a mile, saves wear and tear on your car, helps you stay in shape, and lets you see the countryside from a "hiker-like" perspective?
In terms of net worth vs. investment in his bike, JK's cost a lot less than ours.

I've noticed a definite correlation here: the slower the ride, the more prevalent the titanium.

Whatever are you going on about? Pull yourself together and make sense man. Or at least quote enough so we know what it is that's got you wound into such a state.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I won't. I'm more curious to see what you come up with next.
