A Pastorini is a quarterback for the Houston Oilers from the days of yore.
That's about as close as I care to get.

Thanks, JC!
Think that was DAN Pastorini! Might have been someone else, but I don't
care.

I'll try this in small words and I'll write it in crayons. It's a
faster-than-thought superatomic planetoid that attracts other subatomic
particles, including a huge number of morons and many peons.
I hope it wasn't too technical.

You answered your own question... ;-)
Pastorio is a teacher and professional chef. I know him from the RFC
list and I've come to respect his culinary skills and willingness to
share cooking hints. I've learned a lot from him over the past couple of
years. He is also a low carber and has some neat tidbits to toss our way.
He also is a very interesting writer with a unique sense of humor.

I would vouch for Bob's culinary skills. I recently started brining
chicken and I've found it has opened a whole new world of poultry for
me....
However, I do think he tries to hard when he gets into flamewars with
people. It's one reason why I've warmed more up to JC's style (although
JC never offers cooking tips, just swift kicks in the ass).

Cooking tip #1:
Take the can of Spam and cut it into thin slices. Toss them in a pan with
half a stick of butter, on medium high heat, and fry until crispy.
Enjoy.

Gotcha.
You are an egotist with a few talents that causes you to think you are god's

Jim, you usually do better than this. Are we retaining water? Feeling

You should see what kind of gourmet fare I can whip up with a couple of
MRE's.

Last year, for my radio program, we bought a bunch of MRE's from a real
(didn't think there were any left) Army-Navy Supply store. And we
brought a bunch of fussy male civilians to the station to try them. It
may have been the funniest food event ever. Between the people who just
knew these things were going to be like K-rations with powdered eggs
like in WWII and the ones who were in Nam who ate rats before rations,
it was a food fest of wonderful whining and accompanied by symphonic
sounds of gagging and whining.
Then we got some women to try them. No hysteria, no whining. They found
most of them at least acceptable and one thought they were better than
most local restaurant fare. I let them take the unused ones.
I thought the newest ones were pretty good.

Did they know what it was they were eating? I wonder if you would have
gotten the same reaction if you had put the MREs on a plate in a nice
presentation and not told them what it was. Maybe tell them they were
eating some brand new camp food or something. Then whip up some "from
scratch" good stuff and tell them it was MRE's and see what they said. That
placebo effect can be powerful. I think it would make an interesting show.
I'd listen to it, anyway.

I got out in '94, so my experience was with the older stuff. Having said
that, I didn't find them to be all that bad. I've had worse mess hall chow.

The worst part of that was the kool-aid.

Really ought to give them a try. I was astounded. Many of the dishes
were decent, or even better. None was unpalatable.
