Was not kidding...
Anyone coming into my yard that messes with my spiders
gets yelled at! I prefer organic gardening methods as
much as possible, so my spiders are _valuable_ predators.

Their various colors and forms, and the intricacy of their
webbing is also fascinating to me.

To each her own! <grins> I know not everyone likes spiders,
but I do!

in one of my greenhouses.

The main problem with humans is, they insist on believing they're more
special than the other inhabitants of our little planet and have
historically always been able to justify the destruction of other
species, not to mention the planet herself, based on their perceived
specialness.

The Native Americans are one notable exception. They understood and
revered the Balance of Nature, taking only what they needed, wasting
nothing and giving something back....living in harmony with other living
beings. But, well, lookee what happened to them. I think it went
something like this: "Aw, hell....kill ALL the buffalo and sell the
hides. Kill all the coyotes and wolves, too. And while yer at it, let's
get rid of them damn heathen, Godless Indians."

The buffalo were wiped out specifically as a "war" move against native
americans. It was a political move.

Just like passing out Smallpox infected blankets to them.

The US army was the first to use biological warfare when they did that.

Don't get me started. The murder of millions of Native Americans using
deliberate smallpox infection is one of my pet peeves. That was henious,
and cowardly.

And the destruction of the buffalo falls under the same heading.

LOL, well, not much. At least not to the point of putting humans above
other species to the degree of wiping out those species for our
"convenience".

There seems to be a general, "We're more intelligent than any other
animals, therefore we have the right to dominate, control or destroy
them."

My personal perspective is more along the lines of, "We are the most
intelligent animals around, therefore it's our responsibility to protect
other species from extinction. Let's use our superior intelligence to
live in harmony and balance with them and respect their right to Be."

Most of my neighbors here in the boonies kill every snake they see on
their land, for instance, based on the idea that a snake MIGHT bite a
human. This potential danger is enough to justify killing the snake,
whether or not that particular snake might or might not ever bite
anybody.

The fact that this was the home of the snake, the bear, the wolf, for
thousands of years before white men lived here is irrelevant. The
Cherokee, on the other hand, the "natural" human inhabitants of this
region, lived many centuries without feeling a need to randomly destroy
snakes or wolves or bear. Im sure, occasionally, somebody did get bitten
and probably died. But they didnt go around killing every snake of
every kind IN CASE somebody MIGHT get bitten. They respected even the
lowly snake's right to life and revered Snake Spirit as as valuable and
important a being as themselves.

It's the lack of respect for other beings, (so typical of us arrogant
white folks), that I have a problem with.

When I walk on this land, I wear boots and carry a big walking stick.
The stick isnt to kill snakes with---it's to pound the earth to make
vibrations so they'll not be surprised by my big old feet stepping too
close....and bite me.

If I DO get bitten, I expect it will be MY fault for forgetting to make
my warning vibrations. But, so far, not one snake has failed to move out
of my path and not one snake have I killed---or been bitten by. I dont
kill them, they dont kill me....we have a mutual respect.

My nearest neighbor bragged he has killed 11 copperheads this summer,
two more than he killed last year. My land adjoins his....and I havent
killed one. He hasnt been bitten and neither have I.

Go figure.

LOL, Myabe y'all remember my saying I fell down my 17 deck stairs last
summer, LOL...the reason I fell was, one of those black and yellow
spiders had built a magnificent web using the railing and attaching to a
bannister at the stair landing. I had been especially careful to
remember to not disturb her web and I liked to stand on the landing and
watch her work, close up. But....that one day, I did forget, and going
down the first three stairs to the landing, I felt my hand drag thru the
web. I stopped to look to see if I had damged it, forgot where I
was....and stepped back-----and right down the last 17 stairs.

I can say that I was damn lucky to not break my neck....but the
experience doesnt justify my killing the spider. it does however, serve
to remind me WHY I cant go forgetful while walking down stairs!

Maybe you need to watch the Indians while they spear walleyes in the lakes
in Wisconsin and other states before you make such a statement. This annual
"ritual" is done during the spawning season. I have had the misfortune of
seeing this done, and there is nothing that supports your "balance of
nature" statement here. I have watched them haul washtubs full of walleyes
out of these small lakes. Oh, and if they accidentally spear a musky, they
simply shake them off of their spear and let them go to waste since they can
not, by law, keep the muskies. They do this solely for the money with no
regard for nature. As a result, the daily bag limits of walleyes have been
reduced from 5 to as low as one fish per day for the anglers that pay for
their fishing licenses. These are the fishing licenses that support the fish
hatcheries that produce the walleyes that are planted in these lakes. The
Indians may at one time have had regards for nature in this manner, but some
of them have obviously lost that trait. This loss of fishery has put many
people out of business due to loss of tourism.

Im so sorry.

Last week my boxer, Sundance, killed my Jack Russel terrier. Shook him
and broke his neck. I was pretty distraught. At first, I was mad at
Sunny, who showed no remorse, of course.....and I realized that in Doggy
Politics, it is ok for a big dog to kill a little one. So, I pointed out
to him that I was bigger than HIM.....and that IF he hurts my cat or my
other smallish dog, I will personally take him into the yard and shoot
him.

Im aware that one option is to get rid of the boxers IN CASE they MIGHT
hurt the cat or Dessy....or get rid of the cat and Dessy to prevent them
from being hurt.....
But the fact is, if I give either of them away, how can I KNOW they wont
be hurt some other way? I mean....say I give Dessy away to keep her
from MAYBE being killed by Sunny or Butch....then she gets hit by a car?
or say i give Butch and Sunny to somebody....and they train them for pig
dogs and they get killed by a wild pig? or, suppose the people I give
them to just dont turn out to be as "nice" as I think they are.....and
abuse any of them?

So.... Im choosing to make sure I separate the Bigs when I leave home,
from the Littles. I hope this will do the trick.

I'll go along with that, but there is such a thing as overpopulation
management... Sometimes it's to their benefit to "cull". You end up with
a stronger, healthier population when you have the right number of
critters for the correct amount of food.

When they don't prey on other domesticated animals to the point where
they become a problem.

Both coyotes and deer have a tendency to overpopulate, and the deer
especially when people start feeding "bambi".

They also become a serious traffic hazard.

No, most people simply hate snakes.

I've tried to educate people when and where I can,

It's not a rational decision.
They kill snakes because they were taught that snakes were evil, bad and
dangerous. They kill them out of sheer ignorance and FEAR.

I'm not defending the humans, just saying that the reasons you are
stating are rarely, if ever, the reason that idiots kill harmeless
(beneficial) snakes.

That is why I wear snake guards if I'm out in the boonies hiking.
Those are tall, vinyl leg covers that cover you from knee to ankle. A
good pair of boots will protect the feet.

Precaution is just plain smart!

Last summer one had spun a monster web next to my front porch. ;-)
I actually put up a printed sign that said "Please do not disturb the
spider". People respected the request. She lived there all summer, laid
a large egg sack up in the eaves, the died.....

<sigh>

Those spiders always die after they lay an egg sack.

My dogs are _never_ alone in a room with any of the cats.

I love my dogs, but I do NOT trust them.

The dogs are separated and the BC lives outdoors, and the other two live
one in my bedroom, and one in the back spare room unless they are
outside.

The cats are not allowed in those rooms except for Selene who
occasionally sleeps with me, but she is never alone with the dog in my
room.

Condolences on the loss of your JRT. Those are amazing little dogs so
I'm sure you are hurting over it. :-(
