I've read they are terrible eating. I was raised with
the rule "if you kill it you have to eat it" applied to
any vertebrate. This strongly discouraged killing
certain types of animals without some other good reason.
Coyote pelts do make excellent fur coats, but I'd rather
do that with ranched pelts should I ever decide on one.
So would I? Probably not. Do I object to someone else
    doing such? No.

If you're bagging deer for food, a head shot makes more
sense than shooting the deer through several roasts and
a bunch of steaks. On the other hand, the right tool
for the job. If you blow off the head you're using the
wrong gun. Or being hysterical about someone shooting
    Bambi.

This definately an issue that varies by geography. When I
lived in urban southern California coyotes were
ever-present and ever-invisible. They ate stray dogs and
cats in addition to rodents. While it's good to keep
rodents in check, I would generally rather that be done
by stray cats than by animals that also eat cats, but I
suppose that's a matter of personal tastes. It does give
a very different perspective than the rural view, though.

Coyotes are even common here in the Chicago suburbs. In
2 years here I have seen 2, but I can go outside at night
and hear them. When the locals claim there are no coyotes
I try to immitate the calls I hear at night and I laugh.

They used to say that about wolves. The few wolves left
do a better job of all that where they exist, and they
drive off the nuisance coyotes as well. Coyotes are a
second best to wolves. Wolves only seem to be an option
in rural areas, though. Coyotes do great in urban areas.

While coyotes are beneficial to cattle, I remain ignorant
of their interaction with sheep and goats. They need to
be kept away from flocks, so herding dogs are called for.

Low carb, low carb, how to move the topic to low carb. Ah,
    the deer.

My relatives like to make liver dumpling soup, a classic
of German ethnic cooking. The liver is ground, mixed with
bread crumbs and eggs. The liver dumplings are simmered
in a broth with onion, carrot, various other veggies and
sometimes barley. Drop the bread crumbs and barley and
it is low carb enough for folks able to handle carrots.
Venison liver works much better than beef liver. Compare
with Mexican Albongidas which uses ground muscle meat
rather than ground organ meat and adds tomato to the
    broth.

Exactly. Not far from where I live, people rely on hunted meats for a
living. There's hardly "so little" food around in forested areas. But
deer, like virtually every other living thing will opt for the easy
meal. So a pile of corn will interest them.

I love the loaded, hysterical writing. No one blows heads off. They make
little, discrete holes in the critters. I use guns and bows on various
    occasions.

We don't have prairie dogs in any number around my farm. We've never had
to "destroy" cattle for that reason.

Right. So you'll come help clean up the remains of the dead calves,
family pets, goats, sheep and farm birds they kill here in the
Shenandoah Valley now that they're back. Enlarging their habitat, they
are. Maybe you think we should keep all that livestock in the house so
    they can be safe, right?

I shot one off the back deck of my house. I'd have shot more, but they
move fast and the other three that were feasting on the newly killed
calf ran before I could get another good shot in. Winchester 94, .30
    caliber, 75 yards, no scope.

We found a pair of three-day-old calves dead and partially eaten within
100 feet of the house. Coyotes killed the two calves within 20 feet of
each other, at the same time and ate a little from each. That looks like
    sport-killing to me.

There's no "wholesale slaughter" going on here. But there certainly is
selective killing. This area is still rural, but there are housing
developments nearby. Coyotes will take any small critter, on up to human
    kid size. <http://tinyurl.com/aevcj>

    Nature isn't benign.

No, I would kill coyotes because they are pests, eat my cats, dogs and
    chickens, and carry rabies.

Rather than waste them, I'd harvest skulls and pelts.

I would not kill them JUST for pelts and skulls... That would be a bad
    reason.

    Not around here.
Here their primary diet is pet cats, small dogs, baby goats and poultry.

There are no prairie dogs here, and not many rabbits.
And I've never seen a vole.

Coyotes tend to overpopulate some areas and become SERIOUS pests.
They will even attack young children if they get hungry enough.
    Sorry!

I hope you keep your cats inside...

Coyotes are beautiful and magical animals, in their place.
But there are too damned many of them in some areas.

Kinda like the local deer. :-P

  9. well, Roger...I guess you're right. If you're gonna eat the deer....I
guess it's tol'able (only just barely, tho) to lure them with food.

Personally, tho I do have a hummingbird feeder, I dont put out seed for
    "regular" birds....because I have a cat.

"let em move to Texas"....yeah, you're right about that, too.

  10. Doug---coyotes have made their way here, even to Florida. You bet
they've made it to Illinois. The more they kill them in the southwest,
the more thry produce....and have migrated to the east coast.

The difference between stray domestic cats and coyotes is....the coyotes
BELONG. Stray cats are the fault of people---people who dont neuter
their pets, often abandom them....leaving them to become humters or die,
breeding like crazy the whole time. Completely UN-natural.

Snowbirds move here to get away from bad winters. I dont even own a
real winter coat---and havent needed one, so far. In the almost four
years Ive been here, a leather jacket has done me just fine.

There's nothing wrong with thinning the pack. It's the many places where
an organized coyote-kill free-for-all happens every year I have a
    problem with.

as for the rest, FAIC, coyotes thinning the human pack, the chicken pack
and the pet packs is ok, too. Where my mom lived, in Florida,
alligators occasionally snatched a kid or a cat or dog. That doesnt mean
humans have a right to wipe out the entire species because somebody's
kid or cat or calf got eaten. There arent "too many" coyotes in the
world....but there sure as hell are too damn many people. Too many
people requires too many chickens and calves.

Here's an idea....let people keep their offspring down to one
kid.....and fifty years from now, there'll be room for coyotes with
fewer people and fewer of their requirements.

Balance, in other words. Humans are a thousand times worse a blight on
this rock than all the four-legged carnivores on it.
    Sorry.

    North Carolina. Sounds beautiful.

4K per acre is not bad, but the West Texas land is running closer to
    $400.00 per acre last I checked. :-)

Might makes right, as the saber tooth tigers would be
able to say if they hadn't had a habit of eating humans.
But the tigers did and humans did wipe them out. Right
or wrong, the reason alligators aren't wiped out is
they don't eat enough humans to justifiy wiping them out.

Sure, but I'm pretty biased about that. Being one of

    Not really.

    Aww, look how pretty! http://www.infobreaks.com/insects/ggs.jpg

That's a better pic than the one I posted. :-)

I've had a couple of little bitty male ones hang out in the greenhouses,
but the big girls are always out around the main gardens.

The males are about 1/3 the size of the females as adults.

    I guess the smiley thingy means you're kidding....right? I mean....you
wouldnt kill a coyote for his skull and pelt....right? and...."run a
feeder"? Does that mean....lure the deer with food, which there's so
little of, they naturally come to the feeder........then blow their
    heads off?

No, I would kill coyotes because they are pests, eat my cats, dogs and
    chickens, and carry rabies.

Rather than waste them, I'd harvest skulls and pelts.

I would not kill them JUST for pelts and skulls... That would be a bad
    reason.

Did you know that coyote's main food is moles and voles, prairie dogs
    and other small rodents?

    Not around here.
Here their primary diet is pet cats, small dogs, baby goats and poultry.

There are no prairie dogs here, and not many rabbits.
And I've never seen a vole.

Coyotes tend to overpopulate some areas and become SERIOUS pests.
They will even attack young children if they get hungry enough.
    Sorry!

and that more cattle are destroyed every year
because they've broken a leg stepping in a prairie dog hole than have
been killed by coyotes? And that a female generally has one or two pups
a year EXCEPT when the ranchero rednecks go on a coyote killing spree?
When the coyote population is severely diminished, a female will produce
two or more litters of three or four pups or more. In other
words....the more coyotes are killed, the more are produced?

The fire ants eliminated the prairie dogs here a long time ago.
There are no PD towns in this entire area.

The coyote is probably the most misunderstood, wrongly maligned,

wholesale slaughter of them, yearly, not out of real need, but out of
superstitious fear and illogical blind hatred and pure ignorance ....is
    shameful.

I hope you keep your cats inside...

Coyotes are beautiful and magical animals, in their place.
But there are too damned many of them in some areas.

Kinda like the local deer. :-P

A Coyote ate my house cat a few months ago. She was an indoor cat, but got
