Occupational Therapist in the UK National Health Service. Looking at the replies re holiday time I
feel well off with 5 weeks plus one week long service days. Can't say the wages in the NHS are
great, but we paid off our mortgage in May, so finance is considerably easier than it was, It's just
that my wife has all sorts of plans for the money, like frittering it away on savings, or buying new
sofas, or new kitchen. How am I supposed to keep myself in components! :-)

I'm a student studying mechanical engineering. No real cash flow except my scholarships. And the
excess gets sucked into bike parts anyways, so that's that... 😉

Also, not to beat a dead horse, but I'm more of a personality cult than a contractor. Except for the
beginning, I've avoided the pimps and parasites that call themselves "brokers" and always worked as
*me* instead of some fungible "resource" that the broker barfs up to satisfy a user's request.

I'm the guy they call when IT can't deliver something for a year and the client needs it within a
few months. I do the "quick-but-not-too-dirty"...and people ask for Pete Cresswell, not some warm
body from their broker.

I'd do the warm body thing out of necessity, but not out of preference. A "real" job would
definately trump the warm body scenario.

OTOH, maybe I'm unduly cynical and there really are some broker/contractor relationships out there
that are mutualistic instead of just parasitic.

Here in Denmark 5 weeks are minimum whatever job you have and many get 6 weeks plus extra days for
family stuff. I have to make do with 5½ weeks:-)

Oh and a standard working week is 37 hours, anything over that is overtime and pays a good deal
extra or is traded into to extra free time.

get paid for the benefits they "miss out on" by keeping more of their income. IIRC, Denmark has a
pretty high tax rate...

Most European countries have very high tax rates compared to the USA. It's the socialist
something-for-nothing philosophy where they think they can all live like kings by paying people
not to work.

Can't speak to Denmark, but I've had one foot in Germany for about 25 years by virtue of my
wife's family.

Certainly it's debatable by reasonable people - but over the years I've come so see a strong case
for Germany having a significantly higher standard of living than the USA.

My German relatives think Amerika is an ok place to visit once-in-awhile and they appreciate the
speed limits here - but other than that I sense they regard it as a sort of third-world country: no
universal medical care, no standard 4-6 week vacations, filthy cities, grafitti everywhere, no pay
for overtime, pitiful roads, and so-on and so-forth.

There's only one reason we didn't move to Die Vaterland early on....too many Germans there... -)
