I'm the wrong person to ask.
Worked 24 years for a major utility company, then the Powers That Be decided they didn't want an IT
department any more and told about 400 of us to hit the road.
I was pension-vested and they offered medical coverage until such time as they changed their minds
(that was ten years ago, and I'm still lucking out on the med coverage).
Management spend the last year of so of our tenures telling us how worthless, unskilled, and
overpaid we all were - so I was looking for a closet and 10 feet of rope towards the end - anything
to avoid driving a school bus or something.
But a few weeks before the end, somebody from one of our vendors called and said "Yo Pete, what're
you doing?"...to which I replied "What do you think? I'm looking for a job."....to which the replied
"Really?....Do we have a deal for you...."
To cut the rant short, I wound up working for nickles and dimes - but for one of the largest mutual
funds in the country. The fund soon dumped the vendor, but liked me enough to ask me to incorporate
and keep on working...and even though the rate I negotiated was a lot less than the vendor was
charging them it was about three times what the vendor was paying me....turned into a six-year gig
- so "Independent Contractor" is sort of a misnomer. "Lifer-under-a-different-compensation-system"
is more apt.
But I also am in the final stages of developing a major system for the same power company that
dumped me and I've been doing pickup work in for the medical industry too as well as a repeat gig at
the mutual fund.
Bottom line: it's been very very good for me - had more fun, excitement, and stimulation in the past
10 years than in the preceeding 30...but I think it's all predicated on that vestigal pension that I
get and the medical coverage that goes with it.
Without those two things, I'd be looking for a "real" job, I think.
