He's right, Y'know. You should start simple and work up. You didn't
start road biking by doing a century ride, after all. Mountainbiking is
fifty percent strength and endurance, and fifty percent skill (ratios
may vary depending on the trail and insanity of the rider).

Believe whatever you wish. This is the internet. I don't know who the
hell I am talking to half the time, but I know who I am. Sorry you
are so upset with my posts. I know they are long, but I am a
writer.....I get carried away. I also travel alot...which leaves huge
gaps in my posting time. I post my websites so you know you I
am.....which is a ridiculous thing to do on the internet.....someone
told me the other day that any psycho can look me up in the phone book
I have made my life so public on this group.

If you want me to post more often I will take my laptop next time I go
on a trip. ;-) You guys will never get rid of me. I am connected to
the internet all day long at work...and my mind wanders over to this
newsgroup and I feel compelled to tell you my life story. ;-)
    Peace Darling...

You deserve a break, no real offense intended.
We are both guilty here of similar things, I'll try to remember it is
all in good fun, as long as it is.

Where did you ride? You have lights now? Glad you hear you're back in the
    saddle...

No actually I did not buy lights yet. I am thinking of buying
    something this weekend. Any suggestions???

That was the first time I rode in the dark and I was riding with a
friend who did have lights. I was also riding my very safe road bike
on a very safe and well lit Park path. We have alot of street lights
in our town. We also have some very well lit parks.

The mountain bike experience is behind me. I am actually going to try
it one more time with people who are a little less daring. I think
mountain biking is probably fun when you participate with people who
are not radical, insane bikers. That experience was all my fault
because it was my choice. I know my brother well, and extreme is his
middle name. My kids inherited their uncles daredevil gene, especially
the younger one. We can't control our genetic makeup. It is what it
is. My sons have been like that since they were little children.

I read a study about people who do extreme sports. The study goes into
the opinion that it is an inherited trait. I know my youngest son
inherited it from my brother. God knows I don't like jumping out of
planes and snowboarding down mountains. My one son traveled to Ohio
to go to a roller coaster park. Supposedly the biggest roller coaster
park in the world. With very extreme roller coasters....WHO THE HELL
    DOES THAT????

Anyway, I am back on my road bike, and riding the nice smooth paths. I
am doing what I enjoy. Nice safe road riding in Suburbia. Life is
back to normal, until the next time someone drags me to an adventure I
do not want or should be on. ;-)

Look at the Cateye EL-500. I bout mine for around $32 (on ebay,
couldn't match the deal in shops, even with shipping) and am more than
happy. It uses a very bright single LED and delivers around 30 hours
of headlight quality light, with another 50-60 hours of 'see me'
quality light per batch of 4AA batteries. I think it is billed as a
    1000 candle power light.

Plus the lens focuses the beam in a pattern that some see as
resembling the Cateye logo, but I personally view more as a bat signal
    pattern ;-) .

I found a deal I liked on ebay for this headlight combined with a
    great tail-light. 10 LED's, 6 facing rearwards and 4 facing the sides,
with two switches for a combination of 16 different modes, and claims
up to 100 hours run time on 2 AA's. The buy it now was about the same
as the shop's price for the EL-500 alone. There is always at least one
of these available, I see there is one up currently at:

I only have NiteHawk Emitters...but I don't know enough about lights to
    recommend anything.

But I'm proud of the way you keep hanging in there with your biking, Mags!

That's the one recommended to me when I was hunting some lights. I seldom
ride after dark so I didn't want to pour a lot on money into lights. These
have worked fine for my occasional needs.

Performance Bike has the light set on sale right now.

The set I linked on ebay has a better tail light, although either
    would be nice.
