The simple answer is that you obviously weren't doing it right. If your
mountain biking experience was uncomfortable and not fun, go again and avoid
those things that made it that way.
I'm a committed mountain biker who just recently returned to the road. I
will say that off-road cycling is much more relaxing, more interesting, and
has infinitely more variety. Obviously that's just my own opinion, but I
think it's safe to say that there is a much wider range experiences that
fall under the umbrella of "mountain biking".
One of my favorite things to do on a MTB is to cruise on smooth, gently
rolling single track through the woods. I can't imagine how that wouldn't
be fun or how it would be uncomfortable.
Can you give us some more detail? Was it the terrain? Did your bike fit
properly? What made the ride unpleasant? I find it surprising that someone
who is comfortable on a street machine would find the plush, upright ride of
the typical MTB unpleasant.
