max HR

  1. OK.. so if the idea is to try and make it to work doing mostly E1, how
    do I determine the max HR so I can determine E1?

    The various formulae have me at 173 to 180 which is a fair old
    difference and they are all statistically based anyway.

    Lacking a lab for controlled tests, what's the best way to determine
    the max HR?

  2. Enlist the aid of a friend and a mag trainer.

    Warm up in lowest gear. Then every minute drop it down a gear until and
    maintin your cadence. When you run out of omph, that should be your max hr.

    The friend is there to shout encouragement and aid you if u keel over.

    But, in all seriousness, this is a difficult, unenjoyable and possibly
    dangerous thing to do. If you have a history of heart problems, or
    you're over 35, I'd be suggesting you do this kind of a thing in a lab
    with a ECG and a defib handy. For the purposes of recreational riding,
    most people are sufficiently well served by (female) 230 - your age.
    It's close enough for most people. For males, it's 220 - your age.

    The results from a HRmax test are usually (I'd say around 80%) within
    5bpm of the age formula, and that's plenty close enough.

    Interesting. I do this kind of workout on the trainer everyday for five
    minute increments times six (30sec to 1min rest between rounds), and then
    go ride the road. My top speed is 36.9mph (for 30-40 seconds) in 48x11, my
    best avg speed is ~22mph, and my cadence is 95-100rpm. It's not easy, but
    it's not unenjoyable. My understanding is the pros work -much- harder,
    riding for an hour at 25-30mph - iirc. (is that true?)

    Yesterday I did 40 minutes getting 14 miles (avg speed 21.3mph, top speed
    35mph, six 30 second sprints), and then did 8 miles on the road at 15mph
    avg. That's a fairly common workout. I'm 50-something. ;-)

    I have an HR monitor, but haven't used it much since getting my numbers
    back in Feb or March. I'll have to hook it up tomorrow. My HRmax is about
    170-175, but I haven't pushed it that hard. (resting is below 60bpm).

    I'm an example of someone on the edge of the statistical bell curve. I've been able to get my HR up to 204 bpm - that means I'm 16! Woohoo! 😄 (I'm 34 BTW).

    Same here (34 too), but I can only get mine that high when my kids run
    out onto the road! :-) Thankfully it's not a sustained HR.

    Check out this website they have some great info and some good tools to help
    in calculating MHR, VO2 Max Etc.

    Check out this website they have some great info and some good tools to help
    in calculating MHR, VO2 Max Etc.

    Bear in mind that you cannot calculate VO2max, you can measure it, but
    any calculations based on other data than oxygen use is at best, a wild
    guess. There are too many things going on to be able to reliably
    extrapolate other test data into VO2max. If you haven't been hooked up
    to an oxygen sensor and tested to max, you don't know your VO2max.

    Not that VO2max is all that useful a number anyway .... but some people
    get quite hung up on it.

    I had a VO2max test done in 1990 at the Newcastle Uni, I scored 71 at the
    time and was only beaten by one person who scored 72 when they were doing
    the tests.

    I have no idea what my VO2max is now but I suspect it would be quite a bit
    lower as I am a lot older and I have only just got back into racing this
    year after a 16 year break thanks to a knee problem and then a accident with
    a car in 1997.

    - who is going to try this "go to work at E1" thing. No idea how
    I'll manage it as I spend most time at high E2 and I don't feel
    like I'm putting heaps into it. THe big problem's going to be running
    out of legs as it's alot more motions to go up a hill in really low
    gears even if they are slow motions.

    I'm an average, non-competitive rider and my average over the last year or so is 27km/h. That's no real indication though, most of my terrain is flat; I've a pretty decent bike and I look after it.

    I think the avg speed for the Tour de France was something in the region of 45km/h or so. Club racers are in a completely different league to me and the step up to the Pros is just as ginormous.

    That is bloomin' impressive. Are you super-super fit, or is it inherent?

    If you are spending a lot of time working hard on a bike it can reduce your
    blood pressure for some time afterwards. Mine often goes down to around
    110/70 after exercise, even though I have had above average blood pressure
    since my twenties.
