Is road cycling dangerous?

Road cycling just like other forms of cycling has its perils and though you can try your level best to be on the safe side, accidents do happen. The key word here would be CAUTION such that you're always on the lookout for any potential hazards and that you don't throw caution to the wind. Always keep your guard up and be forever alert whenever you're on the road.

We should always be careful when we are on the roads because cars are killing machines, but this doesn't mean we should cycle with fear, that's not the goal at all, we should relax and enjoy ourselves.

Every outdoor activity or sports have its own risks. There is sometimes an event where you don't expect to happen. You need to do is to follow all the precaution before doing the activity.

Sure, life it's risky! But we should not turn paranoid and avoid doing what we love too. With the proper care we can ride the bike all our live using the roads, I've been doing it with no issues.

A female cyclist has been killed this morming after a crash involving an HGV at Victoria, the fourth to die on London’s roads in 2015.

The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene in Victoria Street after being crushed under the wheels of a tipper truck at 8am.

Police have made a makeshift tent around the Gordon Plant Hire lorry as they investigate the incident.

A spokesman for the Met said: “Police were called at 7.59am to reports of a cyclist in collision with lorry on Victoria Street, SW1, near to Victoria Palace.
“Officers, London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade attended and found an unresponsive woman in her 30s.

“She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers from Westminster are currently investigating. Enquires continue.”

Witnesses said the bicycle could be seen under the second set of wheels of the truck, which had been driving along Bressenden Place - and had just turned left on to Victoria Street at a set of traffic lights when the cyclist was hit on the inside.

Carnel Jarca, a Big Issue seller stood opposite the crash when it happened, said: “I just heard this big sound, a crash, the sound of crushed metal.

“The truck stopped straight away and I could hear someone shouting to the driver.

“The police and ambulance arrived really quickly. We hear the cyclist died, it’s terrible.”

Des Dacosta, a maintenance engineer who approached the junction shortly after the accident, said: “I could see the bike all mangled under the wheels.

“I didn’t want to look at the cyclist because I could tell it was a really serious accident.

“I work around here a lot and it’s a very busy junction, all day and all night, it is relentless. It’s just tragic, another cyclist killed in London.”

The woman is the fourth cyclist to die in London this year - all of whom were killed in incidents involving HGVs.

• On January 20, 29-year-old Stephanie Turner, a physiotherapist, was killed in an accident with a lorry in Stamford Hill.

• Two weeks later on February 2, music producer and sound engineer Akis Kollaros, 34, died after a collision with a lorry in Homerton.

• And four days later 26-year-old fashion designer Federica Baldassa was killed after an accident with a lorry in Bloomsbury Square.

Several protests have been held by campaigners who want improved safety - with segregated lanes and lorries removed from the roads.

And earlier this month the TfL board approved two new cycle superhighways across London, aimed at separating cyclists from other road users.

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A 30-year-old police officer on Hawaii's Big Island was arrested and placed on administrative leave after he hit with his car and killed a bicyclist visiting from Michigan.

Hawaii Island police officer Jody Buddemeyer was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide in connection with the death Sunday morning of Jeffrey Sunow, 63, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, according to West Hawaii Today, a newspaper in Kailua-Kona.

Buddemeyer, who was assigned to the South Kohala district, was released after his arrest. There is no telephone listing for him in Hawaii, and he could not be reached for comment Monday.

The bicyclist was found lying face down near a badly damaged bicycle on the shoulder of Waikoloa Road, authorities said.

Sunow died at the scene, first-responders said. He was declared dead at North Kohala Community Hospital, where the body was taken.

Buddemeyer reported the crash shortly before 6:30 a.m. Sunday, according to authorities.

The Office of Professional Standards is conducting an administrative investigation, which is standard after any fatal incident involving an officer, police said.
The eastbound lane of Waikoloa Road was closed for several hours following the collision.

The collision occurred on a notoriously dangerous stretch of the road, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported. A steep incline where the crash occurred follows a bend in the road.

"There's no curb," acting West Hawaii Fire Battalion Chief John Whitman said. "It's very unsafe if you're riding a bicycle."
The rising sun would likely have been in both men's eyes at the time, Whitman said.

NJ Bicyclist Dies After Being Struck by Car on Way to Work: Police

A bicyclist has died and another remains hospitalized after they were struck by a vehicle in northern New Jersey Sunday, police say.

Paramus police said that the bicyclists were on their way to work at separate gas stations when they were struck around 4:50 a.m. Sunday on Midland Avenue.

Both were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. One victim, 23-year-old Mandeep Singh of Paramus, had a serious head injury and later died at the hospital, police said.

The other victim, identified as 24-year-old Shernjit Singh of Paramus (no relation to the other bicyclist), suffered head and body injuries and is still in the hospital, according to police.

It appears the victims were riding their bicycles side by side in the eastbound lane of Midland Avenue near Cardinal Place, when they were hit by a silver 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, also in the eastbound lane.

The 38-year-old driver from Passaic stayed on the scene. No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing, authorities said.

That's just a small sample of the mayhem from March 2015.

I was staying about 10 miles from here at the time this happened, this is the first I heard about it.

I rode up Wiakoloa road 2 years ago. It is a pretty hairy road to ride with traffic, especially downhill with a wicked crosswind. This section of road is not the most dangerous, visibility should have been pretty good. Have a look:

https://www.google.com/maps/@19.884267,-155.73182,3a,75y,90h,90t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s4FIgf-uH_MGekIXV5SWPiA!2e0

The speed limit is either 45 or 50, its hard to imagine a scenario where a responsible driver could have hit him (assuming he was in the correct lane) from either direction.

I skipped riding up that road this year because there is a better route to climb up that has a shoulder and a more consistent grade. My previous descent on wiakoloa was downright scary for this flatlander; high crosswinds, no shoulder, drop offs on the side, long steep sections and a line of honking cars waiting to pass.

The big island is lovely to ride. Hope he died happy.

I can't equate dying in the same sentence or thought,at least not my own demise. The thought of some others does bring on a warm fuzzy feeling.

I keep seeing that picture of the guy in the pro team clothing with the AR15 slung over his shoulder with a 30-round magazine in it and I think...that cat's smarter than any of us.

Stay safe, my friends.

Just now noticed your sig lol, lingerie football is not bad I agree, women's tennis has it's charms too. What about beach volley? :)

Shouldn't be very dangerous as long as you don't act like an idiot while riding. Wear a helmet always, bring necessary supplies such as food and a lock, and never, ever ride in the middle of the road unless you absolutely have to. Also make use of hand signals at all times and use bike lanes as long and as much as you can! There are those times where you can't evade dangers such as drunk drivers and such, but other than that you should be good to go.

I've gone through phases of dwelling on the risks associated with cycling. This dwelling phase was probably impacted by seeing multiple accidents involving cyclists and having a few friends get hit. But, I've faced the fact that everything has risks. Cars are dangerous, bikes, bicycles, walking, etc is dangerous! However biking is good for the body and the environment, so why avoid it? I also happen to live in a city that is generally cycling friendly, so that helps.

I think that drivers or at least most of them, still respect cycling and try to be careful when a bike is around, but more or less like motorbikes, we do not have a bumper...
