At the beginning of this month, I made some enormous financial errors which
resulted in having first our electricity and then our gas turned off.
I had to give all my perishables to my daughter. I know she doesn't have
space for all that I gave her, but I like to imagine that she at least
found good homes for some of it. She has a diabetic friend who lives with
her, and I'm hoping that she received some benefit from my loss.
In the meantime, I was so far overdrawn that we couldn't buy food. Wound
up going to the Salvation Army food pantry. We got about a zillion cans of
baked beans and several cans of kidney beans. Several kinds of crackers,
day-old bread, creamed corn ... you get the general idea.
The only thing I could safely eat was canned chunk chicken. They gave us
frozen meats, but we had to give them to someone else who was there for
food, since we had no way of keeping them fresh.
I've discovered that I have a bad intolerance to either wheat or gluten. I
blow up like a beach ball and look like I could go into labor at any moment
when I eat wheat.
I received part of my monthly income yesterday, and we bought yogurt,
cream, Hood's Carb Countdown chocolate milk (for hot cocoa), cream cheese,
eggs, sugar-free bacon, and some shredded mozzarella-cheddar cheese.
For the first time in weeks, I had my old faithful yogurt for breakfast
today. Boy, did that feel good. Both emotionally and physically.
I'm not going to weigh myself until I can see visible improvement. Call it
denial if you will, but knowing what's happened to me would likely prove
emotionally devastating.
I borrowed a couple books from the library about compulsive overeating. I
wound up craving every food mentioned in the book, so they're going back to
the library. I'm hoping that my HMO will approve visits to an eating
disorder specialist, and am writing them a letter later today, formally
requesting that approval. (They never got back to me when I called on the
phone.)
It's good to be back. I've been miserable, and it's nice to see some
smiling faces.

'In this world Elwood, you must be oh-so smart or oh-so pleasant.'
Well, for years I was smart.... I recommend pleasant. You may quote me."
