and nephews around, but in reality they were taking us round (they'd been

My work had a dinner/dance there a few years ago. The lump of ice was good
for cooling the beer.

I must admit I was impressed with it to the extent that if it weren't for
the expense of running such a thing (particularly here in Australia) I'd
love to create one myself. I did wonder if they had to "top it up" at any
point due to people running their hands over it and melting it, but
apparently if they left it to its own devices then it would get too big as
it freezes the moisture out of the air and grows fairly quickly.

All this talk about the big lump of ice has me intrigued. I hadn't
heard of the Dynamic Earth centre before.

So, I've had a look at the website, and I can see the pic of the big
funky ice cube, but it doesn't give any info about how they do it. It
looks part of a polar region type exhibit, but what are they using to
"grow" it? Is it some clever, quirky science, or do they just have a
whopping big freezer element buried in the middle and someone attacks
it with a chisel every couple of days to keep it in check and shape?
Anyone know?

Definitely just a big freezer element. I don't know if anyone attacks it
with a chisel or some such, I think they just rely on visitors rubbing it
or maybe turning the power off every now and then.
