This has to be the BEST troll that I have ever seen.
I dunno. Questioning credentials was good, but defending the assertion was a waste. I probably would have gone straight to name calling instead. :p

Frenchy,

This thread was a troll from the word "go"...

I would think that this person is someone who knows "Rich" Stern personally; or at least quite a bit about him. Notice how the OP didn't refer to anyone by the first name except "Rich"?

There are other cues. Just read through with a cynical mindset...

Of course. I was just saying that, while good, it was nowhere near the BEST I could imagine. I could have done better.... :p

Hello everyone,

I am interested in James Ralph's "advanced membership" coaching (see his web-site). This is apparently the very best in training and activities. It is beneficial for professional sportspeople and body builders! In his words, this includes "(a) weekly ride for these members (which) can last AS LONG AS two hours" {my caps}.

I am concerned that if I ride for as long as two hours at less than my formula MHR I will either die through boredom or become depressed when his 60 year mother passes me and drops me on a climb.

Any advice anyone?

PW

and my formula max is 182 whereas my real max is 200.

What is a Troll? An Internet "troll" is a person who delights in sowing discord on the Internet. He (and it is usually he) tries to start arguments and upset people.

Trolls see Internet communications services as convenient venues for their bizarre game. For some reason, they don't "get" that they are hurting real people. To them, other Internet users are not quite human but are a kind of digital abstraction. As a result, they feel no sorrow whatsoever for the pain they inflict. Indeed, the greater the suffering they cause, the greater their 'achievement' (as they see it). At the moment, the relative anonymity of the net allows trolls to flourish.

Trolls are utterly impervious to criticism (constructive or otherwise). You cannot negotiate with them; you cannot cause them to feel shame or compassion; you cannot reason with them. They cannot be made to feel remorse. For some reason, trolls do not feel they are bound by the rules of courtesy or social responsibility.

Perhaps this sounds inconceivable. You may think, "Surely there is something I can write that will change them." But a true troll can not be changed by mere words.

Why Does it Matter? Some people — particularly those who have been online for years — are not upset by trolls and consider them an inevitable hazard of using the net. As the saying goes, "You can't have a picnic without ants."

It would be nice if everybody was so easy-going, but the sad fact is that trolls do discourage people. Established posters may leave a message board because of the arguments that trolls ignite, and lurkers (people who read but do not post) may decide that they do not want to expose themselves to abuse and thus never get involved.

Another problem is that the negative emotions stirred up by trolls leak over into other discussions. Normally affable people can become bitter after reading an angry interchange between a troll and his victims, and this can poison previously friendly interactions between long-time users.

Finally, trolls create a paranoid environment, such that a casual criticism by a new arrival can elicit a ferocious and inappropriate backlash.

The Internet is a wonderful resource which is breaking down barriers and stripping away prejudice. Trolls threaten our continued enjoyment of this beautiful forum for ideas.

What Can be Done about Trolls? When you suspect that somebody is a troll, you might try responding with a polite, mild message to see if it's just somebody in a bad mood. Internet users sometimes let their passions get away from them when seated safely behind their keyboard. If you ignore their bluster and respond in a pleasant manner, they usually calm down.

However, if the person persists in being beastly, and seems to enjoy being unpleasant, the only effective position is summed up as follows:

The only way to deal with trolls is to limit your reaction to reminding others not to respond to trolls.

When you try to reason with a troll, he wins. When you insult a troll, he wins. When you scream at a troll, he wins. The only thing that trolls can't handle is being ignored.

He was actually quite kind to me - so unlike a troll.;) TYSON

To the bloke who started this thread: your initial message was one of the best messages I have seen on this board. And your responses to questions have been clear and concise and informative- although I may not necessarily agree with everything you've said.
Thanks for setting up this debate.
It's only been tarnished by a few nasty personal attacks by other people.
The other posts are high quality and provide incredible food for thought.
It reinforces the power of the internet as an educational tool, not that it needed reinforcing !!!:D

I'm with you on this Aussie Steve!

Far out and I thought cycling was enjoyable. I've got a headache reading this. haha.
Science is based on measuring, poking and theorising and collecting stats.
It's all fact till someone else comes along and disproves the theory with some other idea or new paper. Don't get me I am all for science and research otherwise we never progress.
Progress!!! I am not discounting all the papers and research written on this subject. But one shouldn't be quick to discount what they don't know or understand.
Just because there's a bunch of people with letters after their name think something is fact does not always prove it is ultimately right.
and also because fellow posters here don't have PhD, Degree etc.. behind their name doesn't prove they are wrong!!
I takes a bigger person to Admit they are wrong or say they don't entirely understand something.
It's until you do something different you discover something new.
Keep an open mind on the subject and any information and make your own judgement.
Did you know the world is actually flat?? haha.
Now go out and play!!

I am 45 years old and for the last 10 years I have regularly seen 195 or higher on a steep climb where I didn't want to lose touch with the bunch. On the magtrainer at my "official" max HR of 175, I am barely sweating or breathing heavy. 185 is where I know I am working. Same as for the road. 185 is the norm for me. A few weeks ago, was chatting to another shaved loonatic, who gave your comment about "breathing much deeper will drop your HR" which amazed me at the time, as I figured there ain't nuthing I don't already know, but...because I have an open mind, am always ready to listen and take things on board without going "oh yeah right, that's rubbish"
I have consciously made an effort to do so, to breath much much deeper than normal, but as yet have not noticed any marked reduction in HR.
Having said that, I have a cheap HR monitor (Oregon) because I won't buy a Polar (can't replace battery yourself/not supposed to) and maybe being a cheapie, you get wot you pay for
HRM are for individual calculations for thier own performances, im finding this max hear rate thiery a bit mischievious, because people with a birth date of eg:70 years old, doctors have told them they have a body of a 40 year old, can somone explain the max heart to rate be calculated from? :)

Too effing funny! This picture right on their home page says it all. Whenever I see some (ah-hem) "trainer" training some sucker like this I can't help but roll my eyes and think P.T. Barnum was right on the money.
Oh man! You mean she's a looker AND a sucker? Damn... I am in the wrong line of work. :(

The doctors are just being nice & making the ego feel good. Its like when a 200lb woman asks if they look fat in this dress, does anyone really tell the truth. Besides my father 67 was told a couple years ago he was in pretty good shape for his age, well he just had a heart attack (triple) had a hip replaced & is a diabetic  At lest a few years ago the doc stroked his ego. :D

When did we design all these CRAZY positions in order for the body to get in shape, I though those crazy positions were supposed to be kept privately in the bedroom. :D
