  1. Out with the club yesterday a psychlepathic woman shouted at us that there was a perfectly good
cycle path and what were we doing on the road. Opinion was divided:

    a) she is just a clueless cager who has no idea how much more dangerous shared-use pavements are

    b) she is a councillor who was incensed that the farcility she had worked so hard to achieve, with
no support from local cyclists who for some unaccountable reason hadn't asked for it, was not
    accorded due appreciation

    c) she knows how dangerous shared-use pavements are and either wanted a good
cyclist-kills-pedestrian story or wants us all dead from SMIDSY incidents when crossing
    side-turnings

But There May Be Other Possibilites. Your guesses?

I do like that reply. I hope I can remember it for future use.

PS (My reply is usually that "the path is for children and there is a road for heavy, fast moving
    vehicles such as cyclists"😉. Paul.

She was in a pub garden, and had walked out to the road to berate us for failing to use the red
    kleptonite.

  5. You should have murdered her in the road and cut her head off and left it as an example to other who dare to incur the wrath of cyclopaths.

She was outraged that her 'taxpayers money' had been spent on cycle facilities that you couldnt even
be bothered to use! Even worse, you cyclists don't pay a penny in road tax.

I might have asked her how she would get to London (expecting the answer (from hereabouts) of M1).

I would then suggest I would use the cycle path if she promised only to use country lanes,
    side road etc.

We tried to follow the NCN 70 through Daventry yesterday. Nightmare -- and its fairly well signed.
Much easier to just use the road like normal people.

I watched some poor Dutch riders yesterday going to the Rotterdam ferry trying to follow NCN 65 and
NCN 1 to the docks. I think it took me 3 weeks to figure it out myself. Square A8 to N10.

But we couldn't possibly have got away with it - we didn't have a car with us :-/

Bogus reply. She pays "road tax" to use the road, PT would incur an additional cost.

Her tax isn't enough to pay for the damage she does to the road, so we're actually subsidising her
motoring. Well, those of us who pay income tax are, anyway. And since I'm paying the piper I expect
to call the tune - so she can get off my road!

    Ho hum.....reel you in ;-)

Calm down, I was just putting what I suppose her opinion would be, not mine. But it's still bogus to
insist someone pay to use PT if they'd sooner be in a car or on a bike, that's freedom of choice,
the same freedom that means I'm not obliged to cycle on a [censored] track/lane when there is a perfectly
    good road available.

    d) She makes up the highway code as she goes along.

This is becoming more of a problem, I'm wondering if its worth asking the department of transport
alter the highway code to try and give people a clue somehow, or maybe encourage councils to add an
"optional cycle path" sign to every daft patch of tarmac they lay.

Perhaps they could do a pro-forma 'My Highway Code'. Anyone producing and registering their 'My
Highway Code' will, of course, be exempt from all other versions of the Highway Code (and any laws
and requirements referred to explicitly or implicitly therein).

    A sample version might be:

    1. It is my inalienable right to drive my metal box anywhere I want, at whatever speed I want
    regardless of all others.

    2. I can abandon my metal box anywhere I like for as long as I like regardless of all road
markings, restrictions or the convenience of others. (Optional: I will put the hazard lights
on if I know I am parking illegally 'cos I'll only be a few minutes getting my baccie, Sun and
mucky mag). (Option 2: I undertake to always maximise the inconvenience of others in parking
    my metal box).

    3. All other road users will get the f*** out of my way.

    4. Cyclists and pedestrians will be considered as invisible and sub-human

required unless I am on the phone/reading the map/having lunch/having a w*** in which case it is
optional). All cyclists (even the ones with nice bums) shall be run off the road at every
opportunity even if I have to go out of my way to do so.

    5. Signalling shall consist of:-

    a. a V sign or 'finger'.
    b. a simian grunt.
    c. a [censored] but through the window
    d. that's it. What other information could anyone else possibly need?

In that case, there are several options you *could* try (Holy Zarquon, did I *ask* for an
    existential newsfroup?)

o tell her to mind her own business / FOAD

o follow her back into the pub garden and tip her drink over her head while cackling manically in a
manner which suggests either Baroness Thatcher confronted with a ten Euro note or a Care In The
Community Patient. Extra points awarded for dipping the end of your pump in the drink and spraying
    it vigorously about her person

o shoot her and burn the body (purely pour encourager les autres, natch, and therefore not *really*
    a Bad Thing)

Then you could get your very own article in the "Daily Mail".

I think Guy's already mentioned this as one of his options: "a) she is just a clueless cager ..."

Read the comments at news.bbc.co.uk3056452.stm by "James Crosby, Telford,
Shropshire". Aparantly all the congestion in Telford is caused by cyclists using the road instead of
    the cycle paths.

Is Telford some kind of cycling mecca? If there are that many cyclists there maybe I should move 🙂

    Apparently not. To quote:-

"we often have long lines of traffic caused by one solitary, selfish cyclist".

The guy must be a hero. To be able to bring Telford to a standstill all by himself -- brilliant.
Last time I was there the motorists seem to have managed to gridlock the joint all by themselves --
perhaps our hero had done his work and gone for a cup of tea 🙂

And earlier in the piece "before the cyclists start their usual smug line of argument". Which one is
    he thinking of, I wonder?

Tell him what -- since the cycle paths are so fantastic why don't 'we' swap them with the motorists.
They can have the cycle paths and we will use the roads. Fair?
